I was a QX subscriber since '99 on dialup and was one of their first DSL customers in Lexington when it came available over on the south-east side of Lexington. I kept them because they were the best ISP in town. If you had of asked me to refer to you to any ISP in town it would be QX up until about a 6mo. ago and I started to seeing a degrade in performance and a host of connectivity issues.

This is mostly due to their high speed line options hosted by Alltel but QX has reorganized its infrastructure and went with lower latency lines. Playing first person shooters became simply not an option anymore with latency being so high; during primetime I would see pings 400+ in popular shooter titles. Before this period my latency would be under 100 consistently. I could have accepted the higher latency if the price was cheap but it's one of the more expensive solutions in town.

Connectivity issues became the deciding factor for me to try another service. I do some work from home on occasion and when I need the internet to work, it better work, or I'll be driving 15 miles to the office at one in the morning. Before their reorganization my DSL was up 99.9% of the time. In the first 4 years of DSL service I remember the service down 2 times and half of dozen times I simply just had to reach over and reset the modem. The last 6 mo the connections have been down at least twice a week for 4-8 hours at a time. QX.net blamed it on Alltel. Alltel when testing the lines said it was nothing on their side and closed my tickets and nothing was ever done. Whose fault was it? Hard to say, but from my point of view QX should take ownership and see the problem out until it's resolved but they never would. I simply got tired of calling in to the help desk to try to get something they didn't acknowledge as a problem to begin with.

QX needs to rid themselves of the higher latency routes before I would think about coming back and furthermore needs to strengthen their relationship with Alltel to get any issues fixed in a timely fashion. When that is done they can claim they are the best ISP in town again. Until then they are just another average ISP providing DSL prices at a higher premium.

If I said I could never be happier I would be a lier. Lately even QX.net Lexington's best ISP has been going downhill. Lets overlook that for the moment and take a gander at the real problem - Alltel.

Alltel is our local phone monopoly and in being such gets to have the crappiest quality yet the highest costs. Lately I have been pinging upwards of 300ms to QX's gateway because of Alltel line problems. I've complained multiple times and nothing has been fixed. Also now and then my line between me and QX will get cut and I will have to wait it out until it comes back up. So much for a solid connection. The last big thing that bugs me about Alltel is they recently release a 3mbps connection but in order for me to get it I have to pay an extra $25.

Now this doesn't say their arn't problems with QX as well. QX has always been great but lately they have been adding high latency routes to increase bandwidth and cut costs. They don't seem to care anymore about latency or overall quality. I am a bit of a gamer and this is crippling me. Me and my buddy who have QX have complained about these new routes and have been told that no they will not get rid of them because they save them a lot of money. Is it no longer about the customer?

All in all QX is the best of the worst. I could go with Insight have awsome bandwidth but have crappy lines and crappy support. QX may have some faults but besides those they actualy try to care about their customers.

Edit: Forgot to say, I love QX's news server. Its great!

I started out with my first DSL being Earthlink - you can read that story yourself on this site, but it was a nightmare. Then I went to Alltel, which was okay, but riddled with problems that never seemed to be resolved. One day, I checked out QX, and by following their directions, I was switched over in a matter of days with only a few hours of outage in the change over.

Since that time, I have seen internet speeds I have never experienced before with any other service. I have always been on the same teir of service, but only through QX have I seen the speeds I have always supposed to get. Right now, I'm showing 689 through 2wire's speed test site, but I have seen downloads go much higher than that!

I actually pay QX $17/month for connection, the rest of it goes to Alltel.

Tech support is fantastic. I have always had to deal with tech support that treated me like I have never seen a computer before, but QX's tech support talks to me at a level that is appropriate for my level of understand of how the computer, and DSL line work. I have actually found that I don't have to call tech support often because my line is unbelievably reliable. Most of my outage problems stem from Alltel having done something on the line, but that usually requires only re-booting my modem. Even when most of Lexington (where QX is located) was put out by downed lines last winter from an ice storm, I was still up and going without problems.

When I was with Alltel, I was always having to look to see if the lights on my modem were out, but with QX, I never have to do that. Fast, reliable, good tech support - I never thought it was possible with an internet provider until I found QX.

Since then, my whole family has moved to QX with me - although they are still on dial-up, but they report the same satisfaction with QX as I have.

If you can get QX, I HIGHLY recommend it - you will never believe what an ISP CAN be until you have experienced what they have to offer!

Funny part to it all, they were recommended to me by an alltel employee who frequents here - he knows who he is, and I can't thank him enough! (by the way, you were right about that bad router on alltel's line!)

I signed up QX.net as my DSL provider because Earthlink dumped me and the rest of the Lexington, KY area. QX.net has been awesome. Always patient on the phone, never a long wait. I have excellent transfer rates. It couldn't have been easier. I RECOMMEND QX.net FOR EVERYONE IN LEXINGTON LOOKING FOR A GOOD DSL ISP. They rock.

UPDATE 10/30/2003

I just moved to a new location and I wanted the same DSL setup (QX as my ISP and Alltel as my DSL provider). The move was a tale of two companies. Alltel was awful. After accidentally putting themselves down as my ISP, it took them a good week to correct the mistake and it included 4 trouble tickets. QX was relatively on the ball. Although I had problems with the connection (serious latency issues), they worked with me until it was taken care off. I emailed Jimmy Shaw, the manager of their consumer division, and he sat down my tech support person and solved the problems. I have to say, customer support does not get any better than that. Although QX ISP services cost a bit more than Alltel's, it is totally worth the price. Not only do you get a dedicated static IP and an always-on connection, the tech support is what really worth the price. Love this company.

I ordered dsl on October 30th. They said that I would be up and running by November 12th. I got my DSL signal on the 11th and when the 12th came around at 7 pm I could not connect and QX.NET and I had determined that it was a issue with Alltel. The refused to honor by 7pm call us and we will send someone out by 9pm that night I was fed up with it. at 3pm the next day I start calling alltel and they said well you should wait a little longer. Shesh What happend to the gurantee. SO i had them confrence call qx.net and qx.net got every thing worked out and with in 5 min I had my DSL service. QX.NET knows how to serve thier customers!!!!

UPDATE 02-05-2003

Service has been great but at night with 8 computers trying to browse, chat, and download on a 768/128k line. Things can get a bit sluggish at times. so I am upgraging to 1536/256k line. I ordered it on 2-27-2003 Theyy have been setting the date back constantly. I am up to 02-11-2003. When you have the service going it is great but getting alltel off thier butts can be hard.. update coming when it comes live

UDATE 04-28-2003

Well I had the 1536/256 But then I got a call from alltel saying that they are going to have top cut my speeds because I am too far away.. I live 358 feet from the CO? so Would I have to live in the CO? I love my ISP but I have to say that that alltel should get the heck out of here and bring some one else back in.. You know verizon would not be soo bad....

UPDATE 5-6-2003

I am getting very upset with alltel.. my speeds are getting progressivly worse as time goes on.. I do not want to switch to cable but if they do not get there act together I am going to have to do something about it.

Verizon got the circuit turned up when they said they would and I called QX.Net support that evening. Joey worked with me for two hours just tweaking things to get my connection as fast as possible. It worked right off the bat but he still took the time to make sure I was happy.

This is a business connection and they give 8 static IP addresses for the same price Verizon charges for 1.

I would highly recommend this outfit!

Let me start by saying that QX has been great in general. I started with their "Bronze Plus" package a little over a year ago, for $25/mo in addition to the $32.50 that Verizon is charging for the line. I am now at "Aluminum" which is $17/month, and I will seriously consider going even lower. Here's why:

I have not had a great experience with DSL. When it works- it is wonderful. However, it took approximately 45 days from order to working. This is almost entirely due to the ineptitude of Verizon at the time. (I hope they are better now.) Although this is not QX's problem- I have to say they were not helpful at all. There was no coordination of my order through Verizon, which made things slightly more painful. I've since had two ordeals- in both cases not QX's fault. (One, a bad "card" at the central office. Two, a dying DSL modem.) Even so, QX still didn't make the outages any easier. In every case, their line is "If you don't have 3 green lights it is not our problem." And, "I've checked your line on our end, and the packets are coming through. Your poor performance is a Verizon problem."

Well, ok. But I'm no network geek. Can't you help me a bit more? I was given several suggestions to ask Verizon to do. Why can't the QX help desk just conference in Verizon on the phone, and HELP! I don't feel like a very special customer to QX.

In all fairness, none of the problems have been the fault of QX equipment nor personnel. Still, I wish they had helped instead of dumping me.

I now have my new modem, and we'll see. If the performance remains spotty, I'll continue to downgrade since I'm wasting money paying for higher rates at my ISP that Verizon's old wires can't support.

I would switch to a cable modem setup (Insight) in a heartbeat... but they just ended their free installation package a month or so ago and now it would cost me something between $200 and $300 just to switch. Ugh.

I have had 768/128 service from QX for some months and I am very, very happy. All the previous reviews are 100% accurate as far as pricing and service, so i won't waste space repeating them. I went from Mindspring dialup (aka hell) to this and was amazed at what it was like to do business with actual PEOPLE, people that answer the phone, and have an interest in the quality of your service. I spent too long arguing with people two states away and navigating automated phone systems only to get a recorded reply. I get a static IP, also, which makes life a lot simpler communicating to home from work. I will also applaud the unmetered bandwidth. Newsgroup access is great, and as far as installation the guys there were very, very understanding, tolerating several days of calls before i realized (finally admitted) that i had a bad pci slot on my motherboard.

I couldn't be happier..
