I live south of Lennon, Mi., a small village half in two counties. One person owns the Telephone, Cable, CableTV, and DSL Service. When I built this house I stopped in to the office to ask about a phone. The office gal handed me a paper telling me about service and asked what phone number I wanted. The next day I had phone service. Ever see that kind of service from a big corporation? When the service tech came out to hook up my cable he installed my Ethernet card and left only after both of us had been on the net. I have had two repair orders in the last two years. One was my problem, the other was theirs and I have no complaints about the service, it was great. When I added a router they advised what brand worked best in their opinion and gave me advice in setting it up. The last mile service is great. Almost always they tell us a couple days in advance if they will be down for servicing their equipment.

The people who installed the cable underground told me that they could have run the cables several hundred feet longer. When TVC first advertised cable service they said it was four times faster than a phone modem, 128Kbps. I had 2000 often and seldom under 500Kbps. They have since added DSL and their packages are similar for cable. The office gals told me that this was their way of making the kids who are always downloading long files pay for what they get and be sure that every one else gets good speed also. All my speed readings, taken at differing times, have been as fast as
    advertised.

Now Power-net is another animal. Power-net seems to be down for couple times a month. (I haven't kept a log.) seldom a warning or explanation. Their telephone Tech support is a crap throw, although I must admit I most often get good service. It's just that some of them will slur their name (I am quite hard of hearing) and have a poor attitude (I think they are lazy.).

Power-net filters my e-mail for spam. The spam filters are by MyMail and have both a white list and a black list, These filters are doing a really great job. I love them. I'll still keep Mailwasher to my hotmail accounts and Norton gives me good service also.

    I have package 3;
    Download burst speed 1536
    Upload Burst speed 384
    Private IP addresses 4
    Public IP addresses 2
    E-Mail Boxes 10
    10 mB E-Mail storage
    Service Throttle speed 256
    Setup fee......I don't know.
    Monthly Fee $64.95

I have received downloads at near 2000Kbps from local speed tests
and uploads are most always faster than advertised too.
I could get Charter as they have a cable on the pole but somhow......

I have had this CO for a couple of years, albeit reluctantly as they are the only house in town with no competition. They have monopolized the area and have contacted Verizon, AT&T (Old SBC now) and Covad -- to no avail, they are all giving me the same answer. That area is blocked off and we are trying to get there as fast as we can to provide options for you, now this has been a long time coming as I work in the network communications field and know that it does take time to deploy new infrastructures.

But, Mount Pleasant has 2 fiber nodes dropped on the west and east sides of town that I know darn well the other CO's could move up and offer some better options instead of being bullied into .. this is the only option you have, take it or leave it.... attitude.

They are down way too much and have many, many unexplained speed issues -- line drops -- router misconfigurations -- switches that suddenly go DUD -- and never own up to it.

I am actively pinging every telco in the area on a weekly basis to see if and when they will be here, I can guarantee that all my customers that I support in the area will be going with me over to a more reasonably priced and more reliable network I assure you.

There support is half-witted at best and can't give a technical answer to a technical person, I guess they have a problem with someone who knows their language in telecommunications and they can't just snowball with techno garble. I have caught them a couple of times trying to blow the ol smoke up somewhere and it just doesn't sit well with a small town as word gets around quite quickly around here.

Good ol fashioned customer service is out the window with these guys.. and it's a shame - -they have great potential, but fail to see it and to ensure that the current customer base is taken care of with the prices that they charge. I got better service paying 9 bucks a month for dialup when I first got in the area than I ever have paying what I have to pay to support my customers and get crappy service from my "ISP".

Anyway, to all the other telcos in the Central Michigan area -- there are alot of us waiting on better options and can't wait for ya to get here.

    Signed,

About ready to drive to my internet destination

Power-Net is the ISP, which provides 1.5 GB of data transfer for $14.95 and $10.95 for each gig after that. The ISP service has always been top notch and very responsive. GTE on the other hand has been in the DSL arena in the Mt. Pleasant Michigan area in excess of a year and still have a lot to learn. I had to correct the DSL modem installation to make the connection work. Overall I am much happier with the DSL line than the cable modem I previously had in this area. In seven months there has been two outages, one due to a problem at the local GTE switch. (Which Power-Net informed me of the outage AND return of service) and a router problem at Power-Net which was promptly corrected.

These people(or is it one guy) are really bad. Avoid them at _all_ costs. Order/install was easy, have 2 static IP's... everything is fine except service is frequently _down_. When I call GTE they assure me it's not at GTE's end but rather at power.net's end. Also ping times to power.net's gateway are _really_ slow...ie >>100ms, usually 300ms. Getting ahold of someone after 5pm is impossible. I have yet to havea good experience with these cronies.

power.net may be cheap but believe me, it ain't worth paying for!
