I am very pleased with DSL-Only's Service. I also have to agree with another reviewer about Jazmyne and the rest of the folks over there. Very profressional and nice.

I got 768/128 at a great price, static IP & a little DSL modem. I hope to be with DSL-Only for a long time.

    Thanks,

    Reuben

    My Other Reviews·Verizon Online DSL
    ·Skype
The cost is $17 a month to the ISP and $32.50 a month to Verizon for the Bronze Plus (768/128 kbps) package. I was using Windows 98 on one machine when I hooked up but I'm now using two W98 machines connected via an Intel Anypoint home network.

Before GTE became Verizon, they advertised their DSL service. I ordered and was approved, but was put on a waiting list because their GTE ISP couldn't handle the additional load. *A YEAR LATER,* I decided I had waited long enough and signed up on the DSL-ONLY.NET web site on the recommendation of a friend. DSL-ONLY.NET did not respond in any fashion and, two weeks later, I called them to find out if they got my order. After several phone calls and some hold time (I got the impression they had one person handling the front office), I finally learned that they did have my order and they were working on it. I asked them to send me some kind of confirmation, and this seemed to be a problem, but they said that they would send me something in e-mail. Several days later, I got a flyer from Verizon for their $39.99/mo deal. I called DSL-ONLY.NET again too see how much progress we had made on my order -- more hold time -- and I finally hung up and sent e-mail and cancelled.

I called Verizon and told them the whole story. They would try and get me online on their $39.99 deal using the DSL connection order that DSL-ONLY.NET placed (so I wouldn't have to wait a month). What a snafu. A week after my install date, I still had no DSL and Verizon was telling me the best thing to do is cancel everything and start over with another month's waiting time. Verizon had connected my DSL alright -- up to DSL-ONLY.NET where I had no account.

So I called DSL-ONLY.NET and told them my problem -- which was a ball of feces at this point. I told them I wanted to get online and I'd be happy to subscribe if they'd only figure this out for me and connect things on their end. ** IN TWO HOURS, THEY HAD DONE WHAT VERIZON COULDN'T DO IN A WEEK **. DSL was working that very afternoon and it hasn't stopped working since.

I'm still a little worried about the small-ness of this outfit, but results talk. Sign me a very happy customer and I give DSL-ONLY.NET my strong recommendation.

    My Other Reviews·Comcast
Since I host my own domain on their link, have not used their DNS, News or Mail. Above ratings based on only 1 week of experience. I am using the DSLReports monitoring services, so will report back in a few weeks. One day measurements look fine, though. Runing the 256/256 biz service from Quest, and seem to be running that good on uplink, and slightly better on downlink.

Running phar (»www.employees.org/~bmah/Software/pchar/) a few times on my linux firewall box agrees with those numbers. Pchar also shows queue occupancy in the first-hop router and the boundary router to their upstream provider as being relatively low (Not measurable on the first hop, and a handfull of milliseconds on the BR). Haven't had a chance to run controlled tests to destinations beyond that or at various times of the day yet.

I hope the off-hours support won't be an issue. I can probably live with the lack of late evening support, but a weekend can be a pretty long time without Internet access (I know, GaL ). Lets hope the availablity is a good as everyone claims.

    DSLi = Awesome!

    =======================================================

Hi Everyone. I was a former Flashcom user with 384/384 SDSL. It took forever for Flashcom to get things set up. (2 months) Once my DSL was up, everything was running smooth with a few downtimes. After Flashcom went out of business. I was offered to switch to telocity. Called them up to gather more information. The people there are really dumb. They cannot even answer a simple question on like if they host news group or use a 3rd party news group server. Decided to go with Verizon. Had a bad experience with PPOE. Idiots at Verizon have constant problems with their routing. Got use to downtime of at least 1-2 times a week. Their news group has no retention, but is very fast compared to Flashcom's Supernews. Bottom line, PPOE sucks, and Verizon definetly sucks. Several friends recommended to go with DSLI or Speakeasy. Decided to go with DSLi. Contacted them and order DSLi. DSLi mentioned I can use the existing 3COM bridge with DSLi. Paying $50 monthly. Paid $50 day for DSLi to transfer from Flashcom (Northpoint) line to DSLi. 3 days later, got my static IP and was upgraded to 784/784. It's been about a month now. Have no downtime. DSLi uses usenet servers as their news group. The retention is awesome. So, bottom line, go with DSLi if you your ISP sucks.

After being told that Verizon could not provide me ISP service, I researched providers in the area and DSL-Only came up consistently as a good one. Ordering was a piece of cake, I called DSL-Only and they took care of the TelCo side of things. Aside from Verizon not hooking up my line until two days after the initial activation date, things have been great.

I've been connected for about a week and so far not a second of down-time that I'm aware of. Speeds have been a consistent 690/120 out of the 768/128 that I ordered. My only complaint is the news server which I believe is capped at 256 kbps. I am only able to get about 160 kbps off of them.

Overall, I think that DSL-Only can be considered a top-notch ISP and one of the best in the area.

Swbell promised me speeds of 384/128 but I have always pulled just below A T1 server witch is 1.5/128.I use PPPoe from Swbell and they sent me A Speed Stream 4060 external usb port modem.I did have A complaint with Swbell about this modem and with one 10 minute phone call they traded me and sent A external Speed Stream Ethernet modem.I highly recommend the Ethernet modem over the USB modem for A couple of reasons......1.Ethernet modem raised my speed about 10% and dropped my pings basicly in half......2.The USB modem really seemed to take my computer resources and locked me up at times.

    ***PRESALES***
Spoke with them several times about services and pricing, all conversations were handled proffesionally. I placed my order 1/15/01 ~1:30PM over the phone and judging from that conversation I don't anticipate any problems. The reason I gave them a rating of '3' on all but presales is cause that's all I have experienced to rate as of now so I picked a neutral position for the rest. I'll update those as my connection process continues. For reasons leading up to this switch, please see the review thread under aracnet.com under my user name. More to follow as it unfolds...

    Rating: 5 of 5

    ***INSTALL COORDINATION***
Well, it's been 9 days since I placed my order (longer than it took to get hooked up and running last time) and still no information on what progress may have been made toward getting me started with this new provider. I'd have thought there would have been some news by now...

I'm amazed, someone told me they'd call me back and then actually did!!! Not only that but it was 2 hours after closing time!!! OK, had about 24 hours of downtime thanks to the wizards at the telco. Other than the normal efficiency of Verizon , the connection went flawlessly. It was pretty slow at first which concerned me (~1 hour of 200kb down) but seems to be better and consistent now (mid to upper 600kb).

    Rating: 4 of 5

    Rating: 5 of 5

    *** Mail.DNS,News ***
Not sure how I'm supposed to rate mail/dns??? either it works or it don't!! As for news, I was REAL disappointed to hear there was a speed limit on news group downloads:( I use 'em alot and will miss the full speed downloads). Everything else seems to work real well...

Rating: 2 of 5 (because of the news server governor)

*** Value for the Money ***
Well, at $17.99 it's the best deal in town. All considered I'm VERY happy I switched and am now with DSL-ONLY...

    Rating: 5 of 5

Thanks to the staff at DSL-ONLY

Here is my review of DSL-Only (with GTE)

DSL in Portland is pretty expensive but out of all the high prices, DSL-Only seemed to be the lowest. From order to live was approximately 6 weeks due to GTE not having the equipment. DSL-Only was fast (less than 1 day) once GTE got there stuff together. One issue when I was connected was DSL-Only signed me up for the basic service when I asked them for the gold package. It took GTE 1 more week to change me over to the service that I originally wanted.

As for connection speeds, I average around 75% of the speed that I ordered (768/768).

Tech support by email is slow (3+ days for a response). Phone tech support is readily available for DSL-Only and they appear to be pretty knowledgeable. The DSL-Only websight is pretty much useless when it comes to online tech support. Personally I would like to see them put more info up on the websight for things like adding/removing email accounts, setup faqs that are more complete, online email (although I believe they just got this up and running recently), etc...

Overall rating for DSL-Only would be a 4 out of 5.

Overall rating for GTE would be a 2 out of 5. Unfortunately I do not have a choice when it comes to GTE. After this contract is over, I "may" try out another ISP.

OK, so after my 3rd and final major problem with my last ISP (Aracnet) it was finally time to try these guys out for myself. I had told a few friends about them over the last year after they were unhappy too with Aracnet. I guess you could say I let them be my guenea pig for the day I knew was coming for me. Finally, after a 60 hour outage of my old ISP, that day had come. To Aracnet's credit, they are at least finally back up and things seem to be running smoothly again. As it's happened much too often with them in recent months, I was unwilling to give them yet one more chance. My friends had good things to say about dsl-only so it was time for me to see.

Thursday afternoon I filled out some very easy online forms and then made a follow-up call to (name withheld), one of their able techs. I signed up for the SOHO account which provides 4 Static IP addresses in order to run a small web server. It was only a few dollars more than I paid for one address with Aracnet. Dsl-only did all the legwork with my Telco. Just after noon today, two business days later, the telco work was done. I made another call to the tech and within 10 minutes I had my account all set up. The tech provided me with all my IP and email information. When I got home, I made the changes to my own system and within 10 minutes I was up and running, not a problem one.

I then took ran all the performance tests I could find on the dslreports website. Ping times are much better, Bandwidth is excellent, and the lengthy packet loss test came back with a PASS in every single category. I have run that test at least a dozen times with my previous ISP and it ALWAYS had at least one failed test, usually more. I ran the speed test 5 or 6 times and each time it returned at speed of between 650-695K. Keep in mind this was during peak traffic time. That's not bad at all! Every once in a while I got maybe 10K better our of my old ISP, but they were very inconsistent. I also got lots of tests from them that were less than half that. I will my new dsl-only connection for at least a week at various times of the day and report back how it is.

Only time will tell if they keep performance this high, but so far I am very impressed. Keep it up dsl-only!!

    Bob

My company is a small computer and network consulting firm. We started our DSL service when the technology was still very brand new in Portland. We've had it since very late 1997. Our first ISP was Aracnet.com. I don't remember how the install went with them. They were brand new to DSL too, and they were one of two choices at that time. Our performance seemed normal (what we expected), and the pricing was resonable, but their support people always had this way of annoying me and the outages were far to frequent. After our first year, we moved to DSL-Only when they were just opening their doors in January 1999.

At that time, we had a basic residential GTE Bronze package (256k/64k) that cost $17.99 (+ Telco charges) per month. We got a static IP and a solid, reliable, rarely down connection to the Internet. Since then, we have upgraded to a SOHO account with a Verizon Gold package (768k/768k) with 4 static IPs for $77.99 (+ TelCo charges) per month. I have never had an ISP that gave me better overall value for my money. They are still the least expensive DSL ISP I know of, and the product they deliver is _at_least_ as good as any I have seen!

DSL-Only is not perfect. They are a small shop. They keep their expenses low so that they can keep the ISP service inexpensive. They do not have extended business/support hours (Frankly, since the connection is so reliable, most people will never have a problem that needs attention during non-business hours). Without having lots of support people waiting around, they can't always handle every issue at the moment it comes up. They are busy doing what we pay them for (keeping our Internet connection on) that they often don't update the website as regularly as larger ISPs.

My company maintains almost 2 dozen DSL accounts with DSL-Only for ourselves and our clients. I'd say most of my clients using DSL-Only have greater than a 99% uptime. I have never seen any sort of repeated (e.g. peak-hour) slowdown on DSL-Only's network. I almost never see less than %80 of the speed the TelCo advertised. In the one or two locations I have seen less-than-advertised speeds, it has been clearly the fault of the TelCo, not DSL-Only.

Unless you are a real novice who wants someone to hold your hand during your entire Internet experience, DSL-Only really should be one of your first considerations for an ISP. (BTW, if you do want someone to hold your hand, you might be stuck with AOL and a 56k modem)
