When I decided to get DSL (Verizon Bronze+) I researched local providers and checked with friends. DSL-Only often came up, I checked them out on DSLReports.com and liked what I saw. I gave them a call to do some Q&A. I belive I spoke to the owner. He was polite and professional. I filled out the form on their website and was ready to go as soon as Verizon did their work. I had a bit of trouble with Veizon (see below) and had to call DSL-Only several times to have them turn my service on, then off, then on, then off. Verizon finally had things up and running and called one last time to DSL-Only and they had my link up with in 15-30 (all be told a lot closer to 15, sorry guys couldn't wait!). During this trouble with Verizon everyone at DSL-Only were always courteous and never annoyed by me. Jazmyne even offered to go to bat for me. I am happy with the service they have provided to me... It does help a bit that do computer support for a living, but DSL-Only has what I like in an ISP--- very little down time, good help, and great value!
Verizon... that's another story... over a month ago I was told I would be isntalled on Oct 20, two hours later on that same day Verizon called to tell me that my CO was full and they needed new hardware.... I was put off until NOV 22! I waited, received two modems as I had two "install" dates. The 22nd came and I had nothing, the customer service rep at Verizon said the new hardware didn't arrive and wasn't installed. It was 4 PM Thanksgiving Eve... I didn't want to fight... had to wait until the following Monday. This time I got a friendly and knowledable Verizon rep... she "felt my pain" and was willing to go a bit further and found (thanks to the Provisioning Manager) that the install did take place... but I had no lights. Called Verizon tech support and they said it was a line issue (send tech out) but called minutes later to say it was a CO issue that would be fixed Tuesday. Tuesday comes and goes, no lights... need to send tech out. Call from tech says it is a CO issue with splitter and should be up by days end (glad I took 1/2 day off!)... get home and lights are on!! Dance of joy! The trouble with Verizon is yet another reason I didn't wan them as my ISP, I wanted someone knowledable about being a DSL ISP:

I have been with DSL-Only for over a month now, and I am very pleased with my service. I recieve about 270/270, and have a Cisco 675 modem. If USWEST would drop their price a little I'd be set (I'm only paying DSL-Only $17.99/month!)
Tech support rocks. Jazmyne is very easy to talk to, and I havent once gone to bed pissed because of DSL trouble!!
--->I WOULD DEFINETLY RECOMMEND THIS ISP TO EVERYONE---

After signing up with DSL-only, US West sent my order into limbo, and I couldn't get my equipment shipped. Daily calls to DSL-only didn't clear things up; they agreed to leave messages on what they were able to do to help from their side. I got neither messages nor results. I finally called US West myself and arranged shipment. My expectation was that DSL-only was going to handle all of this.
There was no advance information for their side of the install; some emailed stuff letting me know that they're using dhcp rather than PPPoE, what to do when the equipment arrives, would be helpful. I chose the Cisco 675 external modem which comes preset to PPPoE rather than the bridging mode used by DSL-only.
As I'm using Linux, tech support consisted of advising me of my IP/DNS/GW. In fairness, they were clear about this up front. As there's a good deal of Linux HOWTO info out there, some links to HOWTOs, PLUG (Portland Linux Users Group) etc. on their site would be helpful.
Office hours are 9-6 (messages 'til 8), m-f, no weekends. Basically, they're in the office when when I'm not at home. This may be OK for business customers, but not for the residential bunch. Some calls during the day went to recordings; as I can't be reached at work, it's an annoyance when I can't get through.
Connections have been solid, though newsgroup access has been spotty during evening hours. I got the 640/272 package; averages have been ~500/210, which I'm quite happy with (though I'm already eyeing the faster rates).
This was my first round with DSL. I chose DSL-only from a friend's recommendation; he's had no difficulties. Maybe I'm an anomaly, but it was a less-than-perfect experience.

I switched over from Easystreet after 2 years of using their DSL service.
So far DSL-Only looks good, althouh its only been a few days. I have noticed that they get noticeably slow during peak hours, my old ISP did not. I was pretty spoiled at my old ISP, never lagged during peak hours, and coming to a place that does slow down dissapoints me. DSL-Only is a great bargain though. My contract for a 640/272 business line with 8 IP's is only about 50 bucks a month, compared to my old ISP, 7 IP's, business line, for 90 bucks a month. DSL-Only could afford to raise prices a little more to get faster equipment, or more bandwidth from their provider to fix the peak hour issue, but all in all its all good. I use a 3rd party news server, so DSL-Only's slow news server doesnt make much diference to me anymore. Ill post a followup to this post in a couple weeks or so to see how I feel about the service after a more thourough use of it. But so far it seems like a good ISP with only a few flaws, I'd recomend it to someone looking to get DSL for the first time.

Well lets see-
1. Use a firewall
2. Pay your bill on time
Do those two things and I guess everything will be fine.

768/128 @ 17.99 I prequalified the existing phone line for all speeds, before buying my house. GTE installs my new phone number and it doesn't even qualify. Jazmyne got GTE to go out twice to remove bridge taps to get my line to qualify. Then pushed my order through. Still got it up in 12 days.
She Rocks!!!!
No frills, but good bandwidth. News is capped at 256kbs.

I'm an experienced user (ex-ISP employee) and was recommended to this site and to DSL-Only by a friend. I placed an order on their website, received the modem two weeks later and the line was live that Friday. I've been very impressed with their service, especially their phone support. The line has been great also - I'm currently paying for a 256/256 bridged ADSL line ($17.99/mo) with static IP and two mailboxes, and the Java speed test here reports 350/228, entirely untweaked and thru a Linux firewall - this is also to a very old house in North Portland, OR about 6000 ft from the CO. I average 50-90ms to many Counterstrike servers, with some Gamespy.com servers in the sub-30s!! The line hasn't gone down on me yet, service has been very reliable. Overall I've been VERY pleased with the service, and would readily recommend them to my friends.
The only downside I know of is that their site information is a bit old - call them in person to get up-to-date information.

Used to be with Aracnet on a 384/384 account. Switched June 1, 2000 to DSL-Only. We are out in western Washington County in Aloha, Oregon. So far, no dropouts, but speed is quite slow all the time. Most of the time we range between 74/169 to 165/229.
Have sent email to DSL-Only on 6/9/2000 asking why this is so slow, when we had 200/280 to 310/350 most of the time with Aracnet, when their system wasn't dumping. Have not received tech support response yet as of 6/16/2000.
Have retained another Aracnet account at home, 768/128 mode. Home is only 6 blocks from work. Consistently get in the high 450 to 600 range download and 100+ in the upload. What is the difference between companies? Aracnet is located in Beaverton in GTE land (like us) and DSL-Only is downtown in US West land. Could we be having inbound problems going from us to GTE to USWest to DSL-Only in Portland?
Don't know. Haven't received a call or email from anyone at DSL-Only.

I moved from Easystreet to DSL-Only.net because DSL-Only was much less expensive and more flexable than Easystreet. It is a small shop run by a few good people. I talk to the owner just about every time I call and they really know a lot about DSL since that is all they provide. They intelligently located themselves in the same building downtown as the company they get their Internet access from (Verio) They have a 100 megabit connection to them (no bandwidth issues).
When I called them to sign up they had to have me call GTE and authorize the change. They had done the legwork to get to know the GTE techs that answer the phones and they told me to try to talk to one specific tech who they had worked with before and they had her email address so they could send the DLCI info and such directly.
I have two static IP's (one is free more cost $10 a month). They are willing to work with you to provide the services you need.
My line is 384k both upstream and downstream.
I have never had my DSL line go down as far as I can tell due to DSL-Only.net. I have had my card in the DSLAM rack die and problems getting to certain sites due to Verio's network being messed up but never due to dsl-only.
I think that dsl-only.net is the most value for your dsl dollar in the Portland Metro area especially if you are going to run your own dns and mail servers vs. having an isp do it for you.

When I moved to a new house from an APT that didn't have DSL... I was thrilled to learn I could get DSL.
I started by ordering DSL direct from GTE (bronze package 256k d / 64k u) and told them I was going with Dragonnet.net. Two days before my install date, Dragonnet cybergamming stopped answering their phones. Their recording said they were having technical difficulties due to a GTE tech misconfiguring something during maintenance. I sent them an e-mail and their owner told me they would have it up by the next day and there wouldn't be a problem. The next day the GTE technician came by and installed my DSL modem; since Dragonnet still wasn't answering the phones, I didn't have a IP address. 8( I decided to wait after their owner told me they would have me set up by the next day. The next day, dragon.net's phone was DISCONNECTED! This really cheeses me off.
At this point I called my (very helpful) GTE rep, and told her about my problems. She told me that according to their records they were still "an active ISP". She told me she would investigate and call me back ASAP.
While this was happening, I called DSL-Only.net asking them about their "server" policy. Jasmine (SP?) told me that they didn't care if I ran a server on my DSL line, as long as it was legal. They had me hooked at this point for this reason alone... and their $18/mth price was well worth it. Not to mention they offered Static IP at no additional cost.
About an hr later, GTE rep called and told me dragon.net had cancelled all business contracts or some such stuff with Dragon.net and that they had gone out of business. Man, I was pissed! I told the GTE rep to switch me to DSL-Only.net. She said she would rush the installation, but it would likely be the next day before my service was up.
I then called DSL-Only.net and ordered their service over the phone with my credit card. I told Jasmine my story and she was shocked about all my problems. Jasmine told me it normally takes 3 days to setup DSL service, but she said she would call their tech. department and see if they could help me rush the installation.
A few e-mails and 12 hrs later, my service was UP! very fast... very nice.
A mth later, I learned that GTE had a new service called Bronze +, that was $3 cheaper and up to 768k d/ 128k u. I e-mailed both GTE rep and the DSL-only rep asking them if I could switch to the new service. Both reply telling me no problem and both told me they would waive the "standard" switching fees. Within 2 days, I was running at ~500k d / 100k u.
Around 1.5 mths later, I started seeing peek time connection problems with my DSL line. The connection would just "die" for no reason and not come back for 30 secs or so. I couldn't trace the problem down. I contacted DSL-Only's tech support (via e-mail) to ask if they were "exceeding" their bandwidth during peek times, Jasmine told me she wasn't aware of any problems... and their tech support offered a procedure for determining where my problem existed. About 3 days later during an "on the DSL" WWW lunch visit, I found that I couldn't get ANY decent transfers to the internet. I went back to work, and e-mailed DSL-Only. A few hrs later, they emailed me that my DSL line was experiencing "massive packet loss" and the problem was my GTE supplied DSL line... and that they had already filed a trouble ticket with GTE.
GTE's Technician was on the job that day! He told my wife (I was still at work) at 6pm that the problem was with my phone line and he would find me a good "pair" first thing in the morning. True to his word, by 9AM he had my DSL line back up.
In summary: I highly recommend DSL-Only.net for anyone. Since I'm a Computer geek, I cannot comment on their ability to answer trivial new user type questions.
DSL-Only's bad comment is they don't appear to keep their network status or pricing pages up to date on the WWW. For example, they still don't have BRONZE + listed on their pricing page.
