$25 per month Qwest "These people care!" "Dependent on Qwest for DSL Connection" "Highly recommended"
| Pre Sales information: Install Co-ordination: Connection reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money:

Front Range, in my case, provides DSL service through Qwest. Qwest charges me $33.00/month. This Qwest charge is in addition to the FRII charge of $25.70 mentioned above. So my total monthy charges for ISP and DSL connections come to $58.70 or so. FRII offers a variety of connection options; the Qwest deal isn't the only one. My advertised speed is "Up to 1.5Mbps/896Kbps." My most recent actual speed, tested here at DSL Reports moments ago was 1.2m/719 to California.
This price is competitive with what I was paying to Comcast for a cable connection. Comcast's advertised speeds were much higher, but their quality was very uneven. Real speed was often slower than FRII. I can remember latency of 2 seconds. Comcast's tech support was awful. They simply weren't interested in my needs.
FRII's connection is consistent. Their customer service is the best I've encountered. The "slower" speed has not been a problem for me.
If quality customer service and a selecting from variety of connection offerings appeals to you, you should talk to FRII. (FRII offers higher speeds but not in my part of town. This is a Qwest issue.)
I recommend them highly.

$36 per month Qwest "Excellent service, no downtime, good price" "I can't think of any" "AS far as ISPs go, FRII is as good as they come"

I have been a customer with FRII for years, I think it's been over 10 years since I signed up with them. I was with Verinet and became a FRII customer when they bought Verinet. I have never had a problem with FRII. Their service is up 98 - 99% of the time. I have a DSL connection and static IPs. I work from home at times, and I chat with my sister in Germany almost every day. It is rare that I loose my connection and if I do, it is usually caused by something on my local network or my wireless modem, which I lease from Qwest. It has been at least a year since I last needed FRII Tech Support, and that is not because I can handle problems myself. There just have not been any problems.
When I have called Tech Support in the past, the person I spoke to has always been knowledgeable and was usually able to solve the problem quickly. Even more important, they knew when they werein over their heads and refered me to someone more experienced and better able to help, if need be. I found that veryrefreshing! Usually, you are stuck with whom ever answers the phone when you call tech support for any company, no matter how unqualified that person is to deal with your problem. That is not the case at FRII. The "newbie's" know when to call for help themselves or transfer the call to someone who can help. But, as I have stated above, I have not needed tech support in over a year so I can't really say much about the current level of competence of FRII's tech support, can I? Prices at FRII are also reasonable. I pay just under $36 and that includes my 5 static IPs. That price has not changed in a long time either. The price also includes their spam filter, which is just about the best around. Every subscriber to FRII has access to the MailArmory web site, and you can configure the spam filter to suit your needs anytime you want to. It is easy enough to do also, though the site is a bit slow, I must admit. I can also get my email anywhere in the world using FRII's web mail site. That has come in handy when I travel, especially when I travel to Germany. I don't have to set up anything, I don't have to maintain a free email account and ask people to email me at that address while I am in Germany. I just use the web page FRII provides and get my email there for as long as I need to. When I get home, any messages I did not delete will be downloaded by my email client (I use Outlook) and I don't loose any message just because I read them online. This is getting too long, so let me close by saying: I have gotten all kinds of offers for "better" or "cheaper" ISP service from various companies over the years. I have not even bothered to check these offers out. I am so completely satisfied with FRII I see no reason to change. I highly recommend them to anyone, and most of my friends signed up with FRII because I recommended them. They are also very happy with FRII and in many cases say that FRII is much better than their previous ISP. All of my friends are still speaking to me after they switched to FRII and we are still friends too. So that's my review of FRII. They are a great company, provide good service at a reasonable price, and have excellent customer support. If only every business I deal with was as good at what they do as FRII is.

Contract price not specified. "Very reliable connectivity" "So so speeds, Tech support doesn't respond to non-biz customers after hours" "Do not rely on FRII for must have e-mail service"
| Connection reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money:

I recently downgraded to pure E-Mail when I moved from my home and didn't yet have a new location to hook up DSL/FRII service. As a DSL customer, I was able to manage secondary email addresses myself. As a pure email customer, I am not.
I sent a clear email to support to have one of the secondary addresses removed from my account, as it was no longer used. Instead, they removed the primary address (the one the original account was configured under, and who's password and login were used for PPP authentication). They left the secondary address active.
Although the email request was very clear, they in fact did not only the exact opposite, but also failed to notice they had, in fact, removed the primary and not a secondary address from the account. This could only of happened if the request was not read carefully, or even less than casually, and there was no review or control. I can only imagine that someone took a quick glance, and quickly knocked off the "ticket" and went on, with no followup or verification. All of this is clearly unacceptable.
When I discovered the problem, tech support said they'd have to send a message to customer support because "this is something we usually charge for". The soonest they could get to it would be tomorrow. Meanwhile, all my personal e-mail, from my bank, from firms that report paperless statements to me, and from all my other personal contacts, is being bounced.
When I explained that this was, in fact, their failure, they said they'd work on it and see what they can do, but that it was not the most important thing on the "network team's" list (meaning, I can only guess, they have more impressive failures to attend to).
Obviously, I went from being a reasonably happy customer who would have signed up with FRII again to a completely dissatisfied customer taking the time to warn all of you to stay clear of FRII, if you want to rely on their customer service or e-mail.
I'm done with FRII.

I had ordered DSL through Qwest for their special rate.. was ready to go by the 18th, but didn't realize I was stuck with MSN. Called Qwest and they said I had to wait til the installation date to switch providers. Went to FRII's offices and a member of their sales team was EXTREMELY helpful, not only did she get my FRII account setup, but called Qwest and got the ISP switched, and provisioned line with a static IP in about 40 minutes. I was very satisfied, they had a slight billing mixup, but was corrected immediately and painlessly. I would definitely recommend them to anyone in Colorado that wants a good DSL provider.

Since signing up w/my first isp in 1992 (via slip connection) I've seen many changes in the industry. I am still surprised when I find ISP's that insist on a bandwidth cap. Even AOL quit doing that 7 years ago. Every service level that FRII offers has a cap of 10 or 20 gigs . . . downloading a few linux distros would blast through that. C'mon guys, it's 2005.

"Superior sales and technical support!" "FRII is reliable, friendly, and valuable."

I have been a Front Range Internet, Inc. (FRII) customer since January 2001. I was an IDSL customer initially, with approximately 144kbps up/down. Today, I am an ADSL customer with nearly 1.5mbps up/down. I have always had a small static IP subnet because I run a rather large home office from where I host my own websites, e-mail, and other services. Before I became a FRII customer, I called every local ISP that serviced Broomfield, Colorado residential consumers. At that time, I found FRII's sales staff to be the most informative, honest, and very quick to reply to messages. After a careful service level, contract requirement, and price comparison between all the companies I contacted, I selected FRII. Installation was quick and easy, due primarily because I am Cisco trained and provided my own router; FRII's technical support staff were more than helpful in providing their network specifications and equipment requirements. I did have some trouble with the IDSL service, initially. FRII was quick to research the problem with Qwest's aid, and they kept me informed with frequent update e-mails. The problem turned out to be some exposed wire near the trunk in my neighborhood, and Qwest fixed the problem within two weeks. After that, my IDSL service was fully reliable. I later moved to Westminster and upgraded from IDSL to ADSL. There was some initial difficulty when I purchased a new Cisco router model to accommodate the new service. It was a perplexing issue that again required the help of Qwest, FRII, and my own networking experience. It took just three days for FRII to advance the issue to their highest-tier NOC technicians. Within hours of this upgrade, FRII changed the configuration of one of their core systems and resolved the problem. Making a change at this level for just one customer is outstanding in my book! I ran with 650/150kbps for a few years, and FRII recently let me in on an offer to upgrade my bandwidth from 650/150kbps to 1.5/1.5mbps at no additional charge. In 3 years of FRII service, I have had nothing but superior service with a long and successful track record!

$30 per month Qwest "Excellent service, easy setup" "Internet service a little unreliable but easy to remedy" "Good value"
| Pre Sales information: Install Co-ordination: Connection reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money:

Front Range Internet cares about its customers. The customer service reps are very friendly and knowledgeable. Communication -- both written and verbal -- has been excellent. I haven't needed to call technical support because they gave me all the info I needed up front.
The DSL part of the service is very well coordinated with Qwest. The router arrived in 3 days. The software that comes with the router is very well done. I just stuck it in and followed the on-screen, step-by-step instructions. The whole process, including plugging in the special phone jacks all over the house, only took 15 minutes.
Qwest customer service has also come a long way in the past few years. When I didn't return their follow-up service calls for a few days, they continued to call me until I reached them. They must have a policy that says the reps have to keep calling the new customer until the new customer says everything is OK. They don't just assume that no news is good news. I think that's great customer service.
Front Range Internet also called me to make sure I was happy with my new service and to see if I had any additional questions. The only outgoing phone call I made during the entire setup process was the first call to Front Range to ask them about their current promotions. That was it. Everything else was done for me by Front Range and Qwest.
The "Economy DSL" service I have from Front Range Internet and Qwest is $30/month for the first 6 months and then goes up to $40. There is no contract term. It's not the fastest DSL I've had and sometimes the Internet service (not the DSL service) goes down, but all I have to do is unplug the power from the back of the router and plug it back in. The Internet service resets and the light on the router goes from red to green in less than 30 seconds.
So I'm quite pleased with my bargain DSL service. I highly recommend that you call Front Range Internet or go to www.frii.com for more info. I'm a picky customer and sometimes difficult to deal with, so when I say I'm impressed that means a lot.

"Rock solid, good tech support" "Good independent ISP well worth it with Telco DSL"
| Pre Sales information: Install Co-ordination: Connection reliability: Tech Support: Value for money:

I have had Qwest DSL with FRII as the ISP since DSL first came to the Denver area in early 1999, and they have been rock solid. I have bridging mode DSL, with a block of static IPs for my home office. I run VPN connections into clients and a web server, and need a solid high-performance connection.
I originally ordered 640/384 which was actually 768/640 when DSL was new, but noticed quite a bit of slowdown and micro-outages after a year or so which I guessed was due to Qwest loading up their facilities. I eventually switched to Qwest DSL Pro 1.2/1.1 (I think they switched it to 1.2/1.0), which has provided better performance. I once had some extended periods of substantially increased latency, which I think was due to Qwest, though I never tracked it down precisely. As of August 2001, speed seems very stable and the micro-outages have all gone away, and I am wondering if this was the result of some upgrades Qwest performed in their Northern Colorado offices which I know helped with some customers' T1 problems.
I support a number of businesses that have Qwest DSL and have gone with Qwest.net as their ISP to try to get that supposed telco reliability, but they have had nothing but trouble with the ISP side. Granted, in my extensive dealings with Qwest I know that they can screw up the circuit side, too, but it has worked out well for me (lucky in being practically within shouting distance of the CO, too). FRII has proven a great solution from them, providing everything from basic DSL to website and e-mail hosting. Having a solid independent ISP definitely seems to be the optimal combination, and is worth paying for. I also have clients who have T1s, and have had more problems with those than we've even had with the DSL.
Several yeas ago, FRII did have a redback degrade one Friday and then go down on Saturday, and they posted constant updates to their technical mailing list and sent people to Denver twice to get it fixed by Sunday afternoon, as much as a small ISP could do and probably better than you'd get from a big player, too. Their mailing list, which is available as an optional subscription, does a good job of warning of planned maintenance including brief overnight outages, and other problems; other than rare mail delays, which have been explained either before or after on the mailing list, I haven't had any major outages in years.
FRII now offers a free spam-blocking service, which, while not perfect, does a pretty good job. And their service is very responsive. I recently had a problem with a source that I get a lot of mail from, which hosts several legitimate mailing lists, being identified as a possible source of spam and subjected to traffic delays at the network level; FRII checked the problem out, and "whitelisted" the source on their network so there would be no more traffic delays.

I have used frii's dial up for years. I didn't know what a good deal I had until I tried other companies, which have all sorts of hidden costs and restrctions, not to mention the bad attitude that comes with aol type companies. Besides the fact that the service works well, if one does have a problem a live person is easy to get a hold of and competent. DSL was finally offered in my small mountain town and has been a huge plus for my work and at a very reasonable price. The good people at FRII are proud of their company and enjoy working there and it shows. Just how many other companies can you say that about? None? All one has to do is call FRII and talk to anyone and judge for yourself you will be glad you did. Also FRII will contact you BEFORE you are about to incur extra costs so no surprise billing. Who else does that?? And more often than not they will adjust your bill in your favor w/out hassle or bad attitude. I don't know anyone else who does that these days.

I used FRII for 3 years and they were reliable.
Then they tried to charge my credit card 2 months after my account was closed and I refused the charges because I never received a bill or any notification from FRII. They sent the bill to collections. I discussed it with an FRII manager that was extremely belligerent and rude.
We wrestled through the BBB process but FRII displayed the same arrrogant attitude. They finally conceded they should have done more to try to reach me before sending the bill to collections.
I have recommended FRII to many people over the years but now I am recommending to everyone I know that they not use them because of their poor customer focus.
