    My Other Reviews·Comcast
    I ordered 192K/192K for my home/office. The original contact was for SDSL at 192K up and down for a 24 month contract at $99/mo in march of 2000. The distance from the co is just over 15K feet, however us west, was able to find a pair with an extra 1.5 miles of wire in it. No attempt was made by covad nor cais to obtain better facilities.

    This service was never installed, after a 2 month wait, and rejected quality assurance by covad, although the technology exists to quickly remedy this situation covad would not pay for the proper line devices that were needed to assure a stable high speed connection, some of this is us west's ineptitude and greediness.

    The Cais rep said the entire process should take between four - six weeks. This would have been fine, i was patient. but, it ended up taking about four months. between "load coils" on the line, cancelled orders, re-orders, unreturned phone calls, two separate installing entities who had no idea what the other was doing, and a tech support center with a total of one regional representative and one sales rep, it was probably the most frustating process of my life.

    A NEW contact was then issued for idsl (144K up and down), (similar to isdn), at the same price and terms of the original contact.

    This service is a complete nightmare. When it does work the speed is about the same as a dial-up connection, and a slow one at that. Most of my time is spend resetting the netopia hub to re-gain lost synch. Download times range from 86K to 31.2K, upload times are not even half of that.

    Technical support is non-existant to help resolve these issues, trouble tickets have remained open in excess of one month.

    I just received a collection notice from Dunn & Bradstreet saying I owe them $178.80. Funny thing is though I sent them a check for that amount in March, and I've got the cancelled check to prove it! When I called them in March, they said that's what I owed, so I sent it. Never got another bill. Now, they send me to collections. I have all of my paperwork ready for court. Let's see who wins this one! If anyone else has gotten one of these collection notices, send me an email at kryten98371@hotmail.com.

"Many of us aren't out in the cold entirely & NAS is trying to keep us online"
"NAS/Covad botched a transition of ~2500 customers a month or so ago"
"CAIS/Ardent is dead - how NAS picks up the pieces remains to be seen"

    I have a 384k SDSL connection that I had through CAIS for the past few years. Aside from a major outage about a week after the WTC calamity (blamed on Verizon robbing Peter to pay Paul), and an outage of almost a week after NAS tried step one of transitioning me (and ~2500 others) to its own infrastructure, the service has actually been decent. (There have been a few short-term outages, but I suspect that NAS is learning the ropes as they go. Now, if only they'd learn how to connect technically knowledgeable customers directly to their engineers... Sigh!)

    On the positive side, the NAS folks had the brains to keep the CAIS/Ardent infrastructure operational while they've been doing the transitions, which has saved many of us from more pain that could have been inflicted due to the Ardent bankruptcy.

    In any case, at this point, I wonder if someone needs to take CAIS/Ardent off the list of DSL offerings.

    Well, got word that DSL is no longer part of Ardent/Cais, so review is a moot point....

    old:-I've had cais/ardent dsl for quite a while, and have to say that they are still among the best providers of any I've used (and I have used a large number of providers for various lines).Uptime is virtually 100% (after some initial install glitches). Tech support is horrible now due to there being no tech support persons
    Best if you don't need name service, news, etc but just need a good clean FAST line (perfect if you run your own web/email/news/dns) Definitely not for AOL users.

    Ardent halves work force

    Ardent Communications, an Arlington, Va.-based company that wires hotels for high-speed Internet access recently cut half of its staff, to about 60 people, a company spokeswoman confirmed today.

    The layoffs were the company's second round in two months. Ardent, formerly known as CAIS Internet, cut its work force from 278 to 120 employees the day before filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in early October.

    Ardent's latest round of layoffs came Nov. 20. The day before, the company sold off its customer list and contract to Herndon, Va.-based Network Access Solutions for $2 million and $4.7 million debt, Ardent spokeswoman Allison Tobin confirmed.

    Earlier this month, Ardent replaced CEO Michael Lee with its former chairman and CEO Ulysses Auger. Auger held the post between 1998 and October 2000. Lee resigned Nov. 9, after serving as president and CEO since March.

    The company also rehired Evans Anderson as president. Anderson started with the company in 1997 but left early this year.

    Three of Ardent's directors, Alexander Navab, James Greene and John Saer, resigned from the company's board in conjunction with the filing.

    My contract is IDSL and I just end of 1 year contract with them and want to get out of this ISP (Ardent-Commun.dam). These days, I've send my email & call to them for many times but they don't care to pick up the phone or reply my cancellation. What the hell is this ISP running a biz?

    Here is my email to let them know;
    "Please CANCEL my IDSL with you guys, right now, and send your sign release form to my hotmail account (thuynh37@hotmail.com) and I also need my circuit #. If you don’t cancel my contract in this November 2001 and whatever you turn on your DSL to my phone, and I won’t pay anything to your company from next month (December 2001)"
    and these emails I had sent to www.ardentcomm.dam;
    billing@ardentcomm.com; billing@cais.com; manage@cais.com; b.joseph@ardentcomm.com; m.lee@ardentcomm.com

    However, I know these emails list are working but they don't want to respond to me. I recommand if you are running a biz or home office with them, PLEASE STAY AWAY WITH THIS ISP (www.ardentcomm.dam).

    I had dsl service with a re-seller of CAIS/Ardent Communications called LecStar and on 9/6/01 my service was disconnected because of a billing? dispute between them. In order to receive service again I had to sign up with Ardent at a $24 extra charge per month or wait possibly months for a new service order from another provider. The sales person and manager would not give me my previous rate nor would they waive any charges, they had me up and running within minutes of signing the 2 year contract but now I have a bill saying i have been with them since May 2001. It took me 6 weeks to get in touch with the billing department and he tried to put the mistake onto me. Hopefully this will get straightened out; but I am sour now. Straighten up Ardent!! I have reported them all to the FCC and I encourage others to do the same, consumers are getting the short end of the stick with a lot of these companies, and it is totallly wrong and un-American.

    We purchased 7 DSL lines, for all our branch offices. Speeds ranging from 192k to1.5M. The lines work well....mostly because of COVAD's responsibilities. But their tech support is NON-EXISTANT! They no longer support their reseller-partners and are leaving people out to hang. They say they can "hang-in there" with 20,000 customers, but they are no longer accepting new orders. Not too sure how they're gonna' get out chapter 11.
