The show is over folks...Cais/Ardent did not pay their bills to Covad and Qwest and just loss 75% of their customers. My DSL connection went down last week. Their stock is no longer trading on the stock exchange. They will start slashing 70 employees a week till all is gone. Cais is the epitome of the Dot Bomb company who burned billions of Venture Capital money and is now gone to the gutters.

    Ulysses Auger...you go boy!

The nice people(yeah, right) of CAIS have stopped providing ADSL service WITHOUT warning...It was just gone one day and never came back. when I called I was told that they were not providing ADSL service any longer and that I should find another company. that would be wonderful except that they are refusing to release the covad line to any other company so we all may continue to get DSL service with minimal waiting time. SO everyone that had service with CAIS has to get a new install going with whoever they switch to. and we all know how long it takes to get that going, don't we??

I come to DSL reports all the time and this is the first time I have felt the need to write a review of any sort....

I have a new install going with speakeasy.net and so far it has not been that bad. I'm on dial up(UGH) writing this. I have to wait about a month for my dsl to come back and I'm dying already.....I have to say I'm pretty sure I'm going to be happy with speakeasy...they have a great rating here in DSLREPORTS....later all

This is the letter I sent to Cais after having met with no DSL functionallity since March 2001.

I am so very fed up with the total lack of support since I was unfortunately switched to your company at the end of March 2001.

A router was deposited on my door step. I only know that it was a router because I happen to be in the industry. There wasn't any note. There wasn't a power supply. There wasn't anything to indicate what it was for. I located a name and number from the mailing label. I dialed and spoke with a rude, uneducated, (about any thing she is shipping out or why), frantic, poor excuse of a customer service person named Dee Slayton. After three phone calls to her, I finally got a power supply.

I subsequently placed no less than 10 calls to technical support. All to no avail. I am not connected now, nor have I ever been connected. The last time I called, I was told, (BY A MANAGER) that I wasn't important enough for him to help me.

    Sooooo
Come get your router and end your strangle hold on my lines so that I can acquire a functional DSL service...

    GOODBY and GOOD RIDDENCE

I will publish this on the internet and I will tell every person I encounter about your horrible company.

AS I said, I am in the industry...
In fact, I am evaluating DSL providers for a fortune 500 company and guess who won't be on my short list.

6/26/01 CAIS Internet refuses to authorize or allow switching ISPs.
CAIS's service has deteriorated significantly since January, 2001, and it is
not longer possible to get any type of technical support from them,
including fixing service outages (their network problems, not Covad's).
CAIS uses Covad so I contacted another Covad ISP about switching to them so
as to keep the line up and running during the transition. I sent the proper
authorization papers to CAIS for their signature. After three weeks of
waiting, I called CAIS's customer service dept and asked about the status of
this request. I was told by the customer service rep that CAIS does not
allow switching to another ISP and will not approve any such request. I
guess they just threw away my request without ever bothering to call or
write to me that this was their (arrogant) policy. I guess that I'll just
throw away their $200 monthly bill until they call me and I can then explain
that my policy is not to pay a bill for services that I don't receive.

*********** WARNING of a CHEATING and DISHONEST Company ****************

**************** HOW WE HAVE BEEN CHEATED OF $100.00 *******************

We are Leader Computer, Inc. a computer consulting firm in the
    Metropolitan NJ and NY Area.

CAIS DSL Provider had called us about 1 year ago and wanted us to sign
up as a referrer of their DSL Services to our clients. They promised
that they would give us a commission of $100.00 for each customer
    referred after finalizing their install.

To test their service level and contractual obligations, we agreed and
gave them 2 orders, which they installed and one of them took about
    12-14 weeks.

They have paid us $100.00 commission on one referral BUT not on the
    other one, to date.

We have called them and emailed them about 3 dozen times. Every time
they promised to take care of the commission due to us, but in the last
year we still have not been paid.

I think they are outright dishonest and basically can be considered a
pirating and non-caring company even about their reputation.

We have all the logs of our phone calls and emails that are open to
peruse anyone. I just wonder how many other companies they have
    defrauded.

I wish this will be a warning to anyone that may consider doing any
business with CAIS at any level.

I ordered a 384k DSL Line from CAIS and had a quick install (only about 30 days). Since I have had nothing but problems for about the last 1.5 months. The line will be down about once a week, the latency is around 150ms to my first hop, my speed is often below 300k they promise at least 80% which is about 305k, at times as low as 64k. Well I just received a rate increase notice while I am still under their 1 year contract (my way out). Now I am switching ISPs as soon as I can get it through. I have decided to give UUNET a try. A bit more exspensive but they seem to have a better reputation and thier Down time notification will be a nice plus. Customer support time at CAIS so far this call is 45 min. and still holding, other calls have ranged from 30-90 min.

Today I called CAIS technical support for the 10th time
to attempt to fix a problem whereby I cannot connect to
the CAIS newsgroup servers. This problem has been continuing
since February. Each time I call they set up a trouble
ticket and sure enough I receive an e-mail by the end of
the day saying the ticket has been closed. However this
does not mean the problem has been resolved, and in fact
when I check it that evening, it has not been fixed.

Today I had lost all patience and called again, waited
(only) 30 minutes on hold, and asked the tech support
rep to transfer me to a manager who could escalate this
    problem.

The tech support rep said that he couldn't do that because
he was a temp and had started working in tech support
10 minutes ago. When I asked him to put his manager on
the line, he didn't know who that was. When I asked him
what I should do, he said that I should call back and
hopefully I would get someone else in tech support
who was there longer than he was.

    Can you believe this?

"Static IPs"
"Constantly dropping connection, poor customer service, and poor install"

Value for money:

This is a 144k IDSL service ordered from CAIS. This was to resolve the needs I had of Static IP addresses and constant connectivity to the web.

This was ordered at the end of January. The initial installation was completed around on February 21st. After three days I noticed that I was having to power cycle the router every time I needed to use it. I started counting and this was about 6 times a day. I called CAIS tech support and we monitored the line and they could see that the router was rebooting and that there were errors. They sent a Covad technician out to check the router. He came out and noticed that the router was syncing up and then dropping the connection. He said he'd open a trouble ticket with Qwest. Qwest came out and reset the line and it stayed connected for about 24 hours. Then it started disconnecting again. A couple more appointments were scheduled with Covad, which I had to call in and find out when they were coming because no one notified me by phone or E-mail, of which they didn't show up for anyway. Finally Qwest and Covad came out at the same time. The router was out of sync and they said they'd fixed it. During this time it came to my attention that Qwest had my length from the CO at 24,000 ft and Covad had it at 19,000 ft. They left and in the next three days I had to power cycle the router another 15 -20 times. Finally, I got a message from CAIS that I wouldn't have to worry about power cycling my router anymore as they had fixed the line. What they had fixed is they had configured the router to automatically reboot when it lost connection. I would still go through time frames of up to 1 1/2 hours where the router would connect and then disconnect and was unusable.

I finally called back CAIS and initially told me that there was a wiring problem inside my house and that I'd have to pay for them to rewire that. Knowing that wasn't the problem I talked to a supervisor and they told me that they would install a second ISDN line for me. This was on April 13th. They asked me if I knew whether there was an inline repeater installed on the line. Which I did not know. When the Qwest representative came to my house to install the second line I asked him if there was an in line repeater. He told me no. He said Covad hadn't ordered it that way.

Covad came out to install the line. I had run a new CAT5 line from the phone box to my computer room so that both circuits could be up simultaneously. I had crimped both ends with 110 Blocks and had certified that the line was OK. The Covad technician cut off my 110 Block ends so that he could terminate the line the way he knew how to. Once it was terminated it was still connecting and disconnecting and the technician said it was a loop connectivity issue. He left the Qwest representative came out on the 30th and reset the card at the CO. He once again confirmed that I am 24,000 feet from the CO. It's 19,000 feet from the CO to the junction box and another 5,000 feet from the junction box to my house. He listened to my story and said if it was a Qwest line they'd kick it back to Engineering and probably have an inline repeater installed.

Then just a few days before Covad was scheduled to come back out I called CAIS to see if the line connectivity issue was resolved. They told me that the trouble ticket was closed on the April 30th when the Qwest technician came out. I told them my concerns about the lenth issue and that without this installed it was not going to work right. CAIS technical support has confirmed that without this installed it will not work right.

The Covad technician came out and I had the routers packed up and ready to send with him. I told him about my concerns with the length issue and he told me that he had done installs up to 35,000 feet with just a repeater at the CO and the Adtran at the house. He said let's hook it up and see what's happening. I let him do that and after about 30 minutes he came and told me that it was synced up fine and that they would monitor it for a few hours to see what might be happening. And that I should call CAIS tech support when it was acting up. I told him I had been through all of this before and that I was tired of it. I told him to pack up the routers and leave. 15 minutes later I get an E-mail saying the install was completed successfully. This with me not having any routers!!!

I personally have spent 60+ hours trying to get this line installed. Covad has scheduled 10 visits to my house and they have shown up for only 5. The Qwest represenative has told me that they have also missed vendor meetings they had scheduled with them. The only answer i can get is from CAIS tech support that with a line length of 24,000 feet and no in line repeaters I will have problems. But at this time no one is responding to my E-mails or phone messages. They have been billing me from the intial install date of February 21st and it's been 4 months and I still do not have working service. I would either like the issue resolved or them to cancel my order but no one will tell me what they are wanting or willing to do next. It's been two weeks since the Covad technician was at my house and still nothing. And this has cost me a significant amout of work and I'm tired of calling tech support and waiting for an hour on the phone to talk to someone. I hope other people have had better success.

I've had 192k SDSL with CAIS since Aug, 1999. I signed a 2 year contract at $99 per month, which included a free Flowpoint 2200 8-port router - $0 installation.
Installation was about 5 weeks after signing. There were 3-4 weeks of connection problems following the installation, which were finally isolated to be Covad's equipment in the CO.

Since then, my DSL has been very reliable. I host my own mail and web servers without worry. Internet gaming is very fast with little to no packet loss. This web site reports my connection at 160k on several tests at various times of the day.

Every communication with CAIS's NOC has been handled very professionally, with DNS modifications usually happening within an hour - correctly. Being a technican myself, I really appreciate a well run NOC.
