Against the wishes of my teenage son, who read negative reports, I order DSL from Telocity on Feb 21, 2001. There didn't seem to be any risk - no contract, no installation fee, and only $39.95 / mo (ASDL, static IP). On ordering on the phone, I received my logon to track progress. It stated it would take about three weeks to prepare the line. Three weeks later, the status page showed they were creating my user spaces and preparing to mail the gateway and on Mar 20, 2001, 29 days later, the gateway came in the mail.
Installation was done in five minutes and my connection came up immediately. The line stated that I virtually could get a down speed of 1572 kbps but I found I was getting about 240 kbps. It seemed like it should have been faster since I was only 5000 feet from the CO but it didn't bother me since I enjoyed the always connected feature and basically my surfing was fairly quick.
During the first two months, I made four technical calls to Telocity service (where my son warned me I would wait forever). My longest wait was about 4 minutes - the other three calls were less than 30 seconds. The reasons for the calls were simple problems or question and in the last call I asked about my DSL speed and they agreed it should be a little faster and sent me to the "tweak" section on DSLReports. After putting in my profile, I followed the recommendations and went through their "Registry 101" section. This section told me to set the "DefaultRcvWindow" parameter to maximum (65535), which should get me the best speed. Since my value for this parameter was something like 62444, I didn't hold much hope but changed it anyway. I rebooted and have been getting speeds in the 1200 - 1400 kbps range since.
Obviously, I very pleased with DSL from Telocity, its service and billing departments. I even have a $50 gift certificate for Amazon.com for joining during their promotion.

Ordered Monday, got it on Thurs. on the DirecTv cut off date. Speeds are bad, but could be various other issues, as Covad says everything is fine and is in our building.

Update: Only using ATTBI now. Great speeds (1800/256) and really not much to complain about at all, as long as the prices stay around 45-50.
I currently have ATTBI and DirecTV DSL service.
While the ATTBI service is slightly faster, there is a laundry list of items that dont compare:
Newsgroup service with ATTBI is heavily monitored and lasts at best 72 hours; not all articles are allowed to go through as well DTV has no restriction on running servers, etc. .. even encouraging it, providing a static IP address, free domain hosting(you pay internic)
On the other hand, ATTBI's news has no DL limit and speeds a just a bit faster.
What I would like to see is the ability to get additional IP addresses and higher transfer rates. I dont think the main competition for DTV is SBC, I think its ATTBI. I dont see myself getting the $80 ATTBI service but if I was not getting the DTV service, I probably would.
More options, please.
Other than that, everything that was promised is delivered and doing quite well.

Great working, fast, self-contained national network with free propriatary modem(gateway). Static IP, news servers, multiple e-mail accounts, servers allowed, personal webpage and storage, 800 access number with 60 free minutes/ month for $49.99/month. It's really difficult to find a replacement. You don't realize what you have till you try to replace it. Too bad it got caught in the Dish-DTV merger.

They are OK.
Let me explain. I have previously posted a review which you can read below. Thanks to Echo Mirage a DSL Reports patron my connection troubles are over. He works for Southwestern Bell here in Saint Louis and responnded to a post that I have written regarding my connection always dying around 5 pm everyday even weekends. He looked into the matter, E-mailed me and got some info and did his magic.
Turns out there was a ISDN line in the same loop as my DSL. Echo Mirage filed a trouble ticket and a fed days later I had a tech at my house looking at the problem. He moved my line away from the ISDN that was causing the problem, Replaced the phone wiring from the telephone pole to the inside of my home and filtered the line outside! Boy was I happy to pitch them silly looking filters!
The next day another person came out to test the DSL. Armed with a hand held device he checked the line and I was astounded. The line was rated at 4.5 Mbits!!!!! Mind you I am not a DSL guru by any means, but I am not dumb. I have never heard of DSL being that fast! Then he explained to me that I had a 1.5/756 line. It was capped and only using 35% of its potential.
Since all of this has been done (two weeks or so) I have not had a problem. 0 outages! and I am pretty satisfied.
As far as Telocity is concerned, their staff did all they could throughout all of the complaints and trouble tickets that were opened. Unfortunately the problem could not be solved until Echo Mirage came along.
I am going to stick with DSL for now.

Two months from order to online. A flashing amber power light on the Telocity Gateway that noone can explain. One minute I am downloading 100 meg game demos in 10 minutes and other times I cannot get online at all. Very unreliable. Tech Support is fair at best. Did recieve a call from a Tech who informed me that my account has been rebooted at the DSLAM, what ever that means so I rushed home to see if that made a difference. Sure enough when i clicket on the blue E a webpage loaded immediately. One hour later, no service once again. I have to perform the "quick fix" (powering the modem down for 30 seconds and plugging it back in)everytime I get home from work. It is a hassle.
As soon as Cable is availible in my area I am switching.

I am an old Telocity customer - ordered this service the day DSL was available for my line. 1500/256 was the offer and sync'd rate is and always was 1472/256. Been with them ever since and did not plan to change the providers. I did not even look around - I was so pleased with this service. I really do not know how can you run such a successful (in terms of user reviews) business and still go under. Hughes has some strange ways of calculating profitability.
Their DNS servers sometimes were down and their usenet server sucked, but since you can have these services from someone else it was not a problem for me. For usenet I used usenetserver.com, which was only four hops away (Atlanta server) from my computer - the connection really rocked!
Now I had to look around for providers that could service me - I am served from a remote terminal. Covad did not want me - I signed up with Speedfactory because of excellent reviews here. I will be posting my Speedfactory review soon - my switchover date is tomorrow (Jan 16 - kind of last minute), so it's probably my last visit here to DSL Reports from my DirecTV DSL connection...

Here's my diary from ordering and installing Telocity service in Mississippi. Notes: Local phone company: BellSouth. Advertised connection speed: 1.544Mbps/256Kbps Static IP
=== March 21, 2000 === Submitted order to Telocity. Order status said the phone company would verify my home wiring within 6 to 10 days.
=== March 22, 2000 === Status page changed to indicate they were going to transmit my order for service to the phone co, and it would take up to 22 days for the circuit to be installed.
=== March 23, 2000 === Status page said they had transmitted the order to the phone co.
=== March 31, 2000 === BellSouth guy came and replaced the network interface
=== April 4, 2000 === Received email saying the modem had been shipped. Order status page changed to show "Awaiting First Contact". Lots of connection details included on status page.
=== April 5, 2000 === Modem arrived 1 day early via Airborne Express. I followed the instructions precisely (25 minute installation), and the connection was established on the first try. DSLReports speed test indicated 600/130 to 650/210. The connection became horribly slow around 8:30pm, with almost all websites taking a very long time to even respond, much less download to me. I fiddled with a few network settings, and the connection was fast again around 10:30pm. Whether this was due to my settings or network (or Telocity) congestion I do not know yet. Late-night tests showed download speeds up to 1.2Mbps.
So far I've had no dealings with tech support, so I can't rate Telocity in that area. The speed is wonderful compared to 56K, but I'm concerned about what caused last night's slowdown. If it continues, then I will have dealings with tech support
=== January 14, 2003 === Terminated service due to shutdown of DirecTVDSL. They were good while they lasted!

I too am one of the Flashcom *orphans*. After receiving my email and letter from Northpoint telling me of the mirgration, i immediatetly came to this site to read all of the reviews. Most of them negative, but i experienced that with the Flashcom reviews also. So with a little caution i agreed to switch to Telocity. Let me just say i was very happy with Flashcom. Speeds were always great(416/416), very little down time, the most i remember was about two hours one day. Tech support was aware when i called and they even answered the phone quickly. I never experienced any of the troubles mentioned on this site with regards to Flashcom.
A few days after i confirmed my switch with Telocity i recieved a phone call from them to verify my credit card number. I asked the woman about when i would be switched and she informed me they will notify me by email when the switch would take place. I called Telocity on the 26th to get an update and the gentlman said it would be sometime next week(which was this week.) I also had him update my email address since Northpoint had an old address. i was amazed that on Wednesday of this week i got an email from Telocity(at the correct address) that my migration would take place last night between 8pm - 4 am. My Gateway arrived via Airborne Express on Thursday just as Telocity said it would. I am not sure what time it actually happened since i was still surfin at midnight, and the rest of the time i was at work or sleeping. When i got home from work i confirmed my Flashcom connection no longer existed. So i got out my Gateway, installed it, and the software that came with it, and was installed and surfing the net in 12 minutes.
My new email account seems to be working fine along with my newsgroups. I will wait a few weeks before giving Telocity a thumps up or down until i had a chance to experience their service. I just hope that i don't experience any of the horror storys told here like i didn't experience any of them with Flashcom. I guess only time will tell.
