Ace DSL, now called Acescape, is a treasure. Real people call you back and talk to you like a person. And they're "cool."

Update 10/2011:
I have just switched to FiOS 25Mbit - only because of the massive increase in speed over DSL. I was sad to leave Ace -- I have only had excellent experiences whenever dealing with them.
In fact, I had wished that Ace would provide similar service over FiOS that they do over Verizon DSL -- and they to do an extent. They actually do, in the form of VPN service. As such, I've switched over that (along with FiOS). The VPN connection gives me 5 static IP addresses and 5Mbit up/down for $15/mo.
_________________________________________________________________ Update 5/2005:
I just had AceDSL upgrade me to 3000/768, for an extra $10/mo. It took an extra week, because Verizon kept bouncing the order (being that it's a 'partner' ordering 3K/768 on an RT), but when the order finally went in AceDSL told me it would take 3 days to take effect, and it did.
Service with AceDSL has been problem free to date. It's definitely worth it to us. _________________________________________________________________
My AceDSL line went live this week. There have been no problems at all during the provisioning and setup phase. Everything has happened exactly as AceDSL (Acescape) as said it would.
This line is replacing my Speakeasy/Worldcom (previously DSLi/Rhythms) IDSL at 144 w/static IP, which was costing $59.95+"fees"/mo. I''ve been a very happy customer of Speakeasy, and am sorry to be leaving them. However, I'm at 36000' from the CO, and I can't get anything other than IDSL from a CLEC.
However, I'm under 9000' from a Verizon Remote Terminal. That means I can get DSL from Verizon for $29.95/mo. But, I don't want PPPoE, and I'd rather keep a static IP. That rules out Verizon, but leaves any Verizon partner.
AceDSL is giving me 1600/384 w/static IP and without PPPoE for the exact same price as my IDSL. It's a no-brainer to switch. And they do not require a contract, and no setup fee (just $20 for "S&H" of the modem).
Installation went without a hitch. I got the Westell modem from them in the mail, plugged it in, and was up and running within minutes.
My line is now up and fully functional. I had a minor packet loss problem that I traced back to be within their network. I opened a support ticket about it on Saturday, and they **called** me on the phone about the problem on Sunday afternoon. I missed that call, but when I spoke to them on Monday night, I emailed a bunch of traces to them. They fixed the problem before midnight. Now, THAT'S how technical support is supposed to work!
I am now seeing TCP transfers of 183KBps.

[2010] Just moved again. After 9 years I am still their customer, and that says enough. I am impressed not only with competent customer service, but the fact that it did not get diluted as they grow.
I also ported my phone to their VoIP service a few of years ago.
=======
[2004] Review updated -- below is my 2001 review. Recently moved across the street (same Verizon CO), and the move was handled very well and timely, 3 days ahead of promised schedule. Total downtime during the move was 7 days, the time it took Verizon to reconnect the phone and then DSL.
I have since stopped running public web services from home, so downgraded to usual ADSL 768/128. The speed is as advertised, and there was very little downtime.
======= I moved recently to NYC and was extremely disappointed with my previous provider (Telocity) in handling the move. To their excuse, though, Northpoint went under at the same time (it can be further said to their credit that in California I had no problems with Telocity service). A month later they still had no idea how they were going to provide DSL to me, and I called AceDSL. They connected me a week before their original promised time, so it took a little over 2 weeks. Bandwidth is exactly as advertised (SDSL at 384). No problems to report so far.
5 months later, I find them overall excellent. A few times they were down while trying to maintain the network, usually for a very brief period and mostly late at night. Otherwise, I always get the promised 384kbps up and down.
They always answer the phone and e-mail and are generally very helpful. Even more helpful is the fact that you seldom need their help. Trivial things that took months and hours on the phone with Telocity (like update DNS record for my node) were done instantly over the phone.

$49 per month about 20 days Verizon "Fast turnup, static IP, no PPPoE" "Verizon still monopolizes the last mile ... but that's not Acecape's fault" "Don't even think of Verizon Online. Get Acecape."
| Pre Sales information: Install Co-ordination: Connection reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money:

After having been burned by the Northpoint collapse, I found myself looking for a new DSL provider. I placed orders with a few different providers, planning to accept the first one that got installed and cancel the rest.
Acecape came through. Even though Verizon Online insisted that I couldn't get service, Acecape (which uses Verizon's DSL carrier service) offered me 768/128 ADSL. I placed the order online, and as soon as it was checked out I got a reply e-mail with my install date.
I didn't order equipment, because a co-worker who recently cancelled Verizon Online service gave me his Westell DMT. I plugged it in and waited. The service went live a day early. Configuration was a snap, because Acecape provides static IP addresses and doesn't use that ghastly PPPoE stuff. One thing that I particularly like about Acecape is that they allow you to run servers, and they say so very clearly. Since I run a hobbyist BBS (just for fun), this is a big win.
The service is quite responsive, and the people at Acecape have been good about answering my questions quickly. This is a great service. Don't think twice about ordering it.
POST SCRIPT: three years later, I am still absolutely *delighted* with Acecape. The service has been totally solid. If you want DSL, go with Acecape. It's better than any other DSL provider. It's also better than the cable goons.
END GAME: it's now nearly eight years since I've had Ace, and I've been delighted with their service the entire time. It's been reliable, stable, fast, and the people there are an absolute dream to work with. A few years ago I ordered their VoIP service and it's great too. I'm sad to say that I'll be leaving Ace next week because I have ordered Verizon FiOS -- I needed a "triple play" bundle because the trees behind my house are so tall and thick now that I can't get DirecTV to work anymore. Ace resells FiOS but they are unable to offer it with the television service (and it really isn't their service anyway; they're just a reseller). Anyway, I've been a VERY HAPPY customer of Ace all these years, and will be sad to leave. Maybe after my triple play bundle expires in two years I'll switch my phone back to their VoIP service.

$59 per month about 20 days Verizon "Great Support! Great Features! Reliable Connection! Servers Allowed!" "Install Problems... Line got Disconnected.... VERIZON SUCKS!!!" "After a 2 and a half week delay past the original install date, worked great!"

Opted for the 3.0/768 Dryloop plan where they matched my local Comcast price at 59.99/mo for their 2.0/0.5Mbit package
Pre-install:
Order went flawlessly, Support / sales was able to give me all information I needed prior to the install. 24 hour tech support with a 1 Hour callback is a very nice feature
Static IP address is GREAT!!! No ports blocked!!! Fast reliable 3.0 Mbit connection down constantly!
Install Date: Installer arrived on-time and was able to get it up and running in under 20 minutes, complete with IP address... Installed Dryloop from nearest pole and even ran new Cat-5 to the modem location inside the house at no charge. I used existing Westell modem from a previous DSL line at another location. Install was difficult as previous tenant at this location cut the phone lines off the side of the house, so they had to run new lines from the 'mirror image' box on the pole to the side of the house...
Post Install:
Great speeds, worked great for 2 days... Then NOTHING... Modem lost Carrier Sync and the DSL light began to blink a steady rate non-stop... Tried restarting router multiple times, still NOTHING... Called support at 8PM when the connection was lost... Got callback at 9PM from a VERY knowledgeable tech who knew advanced routing and the such... They said that it seemed that they couldn't 'see' my modem and that there could be a line down somewhere, or the CO might be out.... told me they would look into it and call me in the AM...
Next day: Callback received saying that Verizon "Deactivated" the account and that it rarely happens... the reasoning behind this is as follows:
*Verizon Assigns a # to each Dry-loop connection
*each number is associated to two pairs of wires at the CO.
*this number is required in order to assign an "IP" address and DNS information to the line.
*this Phone Number is what the modem "syncs" to when it turns on... without a number, the modem cannot find how to connect.
Tech support at AceDSL explained that the issue was on the verizon side of things and they would escalate the problem in order to get the line re-enabled.
Verizon Tech Support explained that the number had already been re-allocated to someone else's house and that I would need to wait a full week for an installer to come *back* to the house in order to re-patch the wires to a new number to re-activate service... Made an appointment for 7 days after the initial install date...
At this point I could understand where a mistake could have been made in the verizon system and was willing to wait 7 more days as It only took 5 days from the inital order for the installer to show up and install it... it still was within a reasonable timeframe and was more than happy to wait the 7 extra days for the installer to come back out...
*7 Days Later*:
and they
I Stay home from Classes all-day in order to wait for the installer to show up... Verizon called that morning to say that they would be there between 10AM and 5PM. at 4:45 Verizon Called to explain that the Tech was still stuck at a job and would be UNABLE to make the appointment I had for the day... I explained to verizon that I stayed home all day waiting for the tech, and they explained verbatim "I am sorry sir, our tech's have lives outside of work, and they do not have to work past 5PM sir... there is nothing more I can do other than to re-schedule this appointment." I said "what about tommorrow" and I was told that the *earliest* they could make an appointment for since the installers in the area were going on "vacation" for 2 weeks, would be a month from that Friday... over 40 days... Thanks Verizon!!!...
I called AceDSL Support back and explained the issue... they immediatally called their contacts at Verizon and re-scheduled an install for that *monday* 3 days later...
3-days later, Verizon calls up again after waiting ALL DAY... "i'm sorry sir, the installer called in sick today... there's nothing we can do... you'll have to re-schedule sir"... I began to become VERY pissed at this point as now i've had to reschedule twice!!!!... I told Verizon again, that I am VERY unsatisfied with their service and demanded an installer came out that evening as it was only 3PM... they HUNG UP ON ME!!!... I called verizon DSL service's 1800 number listed on the phone book and they explained that I would have to call AceDSL and there would be nothing they could do...
I called AceDSL and they called Verizon back AGAIN to re-schedule for me... at this point I was considering giving up on DSL and having to settle for Com-crap-tastic! with having to pay for TV service also at a minimum of $69.99 additional..
4 hours later... 7PM, a verizon tech shows up banging on my front door...
I open the door to a tech asking if I was expecting a DSL install that day...
I explained that I have been waiting and explained to the tech what verizon had told me... they explained that I was scheduled for that day, but verizon had actually put a 'hold' on my install as it was not "top priority". I also asked the tech why they claimed the tech called in "sick" and they said that often times the phone support at verizon will claim the installer is "sick" if the installer is over-booked in attempt to make the customer happy...
Overall, the installer explained that he got a call from dispatch telling him that my install was to be put at top priority and to have it finished that evening... turned out AceDSL called verizon back to insist the install be completed that night...
The installer re-activated the line, and also replaced 2 Cat-3 lines with Cat-5 and gave me an additional 10Feet of cat-5 to go from my router to PC since the wire I had in there was very badly rolled-over with a chair... overall the re-install took less than 10 minutes!
The final conclusion: AceDSL rocks!!! I'm VERY happy with their Phone Support, Services, and reliability... I am however not very happy with Verizon at ALL!!! makes me wonder how verizon stays in business with this crappy tech-support AceDSL even gave me a pro-rated discount for the days I went without service and even offered free dial-up if I could find a phone line somewhere (at school or anywhere else)...
I would recommend AceDSL to anyone looking for a good static-ip solution, with amazing support and people who actually know networking.... they allow servers, dont block ports, no bandwidth throttling or limits, and port 80 is open! all without a contract!!! yes, no contracts!!! which make this 10x better! I feel that if only verizon was a bit more helpful with their installers, this would have been the best install i've ever experienced... especially with the fact they really know what they're talking about in regard to networking!
Overall it's been 5 months and I haven't had ONE service outage or even any problems with the modem losing Sync... Heck, I haven't even rebooted my modem OR router since it has been installed... yes, 5 months with NO modem restarts!!! service has remained a constiant 2995/down and 695/up out of the advertised 3000/down and 768/up... overall i'm very impressed.
AceDSL Support: A+
AceDSL Reliability: A+
AceDSL Post-Install: A+
Verizon Support : F
Verizon Installers: B+
Overall i'd give my experience a "B" grade.
Other than the issues with verizon, i'm very happy :-D

Verizon couldn't figure out how to install DSL service initially. After a couple months of wasted time, had a Verizon tech come out and try to activate the service only to learn that they had set up a circuit a couple miles away. Then I was told I was more than 18,000 feet away from the CO when I'm actually about 6000 feet away. The bureaucracy within Verizon impossible to negotiate unless you spend days of your time.
Called AceDSL (had used them for business service) and they placed the order and soon had service up and running (through a Verizon local loop). My DSL service is used sporadically for work purposes so I can't say it is 100% reliable but I haven't had any noticeable down time.
On two separate occasions, they emailed me a form to sign with my credit card and billing information unencrypted. I had complained about the first email months before the second email was sent. I must say the emails were disappointing. I would urge whoever is contemplating signing up with AceDSL to make sure they do not sent confidential information through email.

I have been with them since 2000. Before that, I was a loyal Verizon customer. Ive sign up for DSL long before the roll out. But I switched to ACEDSL after experiencing frustration with Verizon CS, the continuously degrading line speed and the PPPOE BS. Why in the world would I need to login to the internet as with Verizon using their client is beyond me.
There are many benefits with ACEDSL. Here I will concentrate on just one: Business class service from Verizon. I hate Verizon for many reason, (labor practice, CEO getting bonus for cutting 4000 jobs, quality of residential service and If you are a customer that paying less than $50/m, they dont even want to take to you
etc) too many to list here, because of this hatred. I make it my goal to not have any of my hard earn dollars going toward this evil empire. But since this is impossible, I choose the second best option, getting the most costly option from Verizon with just residential service. I achieved this but selecting ACEDSL residential service.
ACEDSL leases line from Verizon and in turn resell them for a profit. Since ACE gets these lines in bulk, they are in fact a business customer of Verizon, translate to business class priority service. Since ACE doesnt provide any physical support (linesman, engineer, telecom tech
etc). This meant I get this business class service in directly from Verizon. The service would be dramatically poorer if I was a direct residential Verizon customer.
Bottom line: If you are computer literate, you cant go wrong with ACEDSL. If not, stay with AOL.
Additional benefit from ACEDSL: NOT Verizon, Static IP, tech support with real technical background, no script reading India tech support, no monthly bill, no PPPOE, dont need to logon, free business technical support
My background: CS major, working in the telecom industry as software engineer.
Verizon lost earning from me as a customer: 3 Land lines Vonage, 7 cellular lines ATT/Nextel/Cingular, 1 wireless DSL Sprint Aircard, 1 Blackberry ATT and 1 residential DSL connection ACEDSL. 3 additional refer DSL connections.

***UPDATE, ORIGINAL BELOW****
I now have THREE lines from AceDSL. You could say that I'm a happy customer. Their stuff just works, and it is as fast the telcos alllow. No limits, no port blocking, I'm happy.
---original review----
I switched from one local ISP to another - from Pilosoft to Acedsl. The switch was super easy - the lines cut over exactly when they said they would, and simply took new settings in my router to get up on the new service.
Better yet, they gave me a discount as a "competitive upgrade", and responded to my every question nearly instantly. Highly recommended.
Deets: $59.95 for 3000kbps/768kbps service. No equipment required, already had it. The web ordering was a piece of cake. One static IP. Great communications in general. Ask for Arkady over there - he's great.

5/9/2007 - Been a while since I've updated this review, but I've been running AceDSL for nearly 3 years now, and am extremely satisfied. I was experiencing massive ping spikes periodically up into the 4000's at one point, and while it took a long time to resolve, the AceDSL folks were about as helpful as they could be. The problem seemed to "resolve itself", as apparently it was in Verizon's side.
Only wish now is for higher speeds.. I'd love to get the 7MB down service since that's practically a cable standard now, but it's just too cost prohibitive at this point.
11/22/2005 - Had the service for more than a year now, and it's been running like a champ. Ace's price for 3/768 dropped not too long ago, and a simple email got my rate dropped as well. This price is now right on par with Comcast's cable offerings at the same speed (without a cable TV package). Service has been 99% reliable, and any time I've ever hard to call support, they're knowledgeable, friendly, and fast.
9/13/2004 - Service was activated early, received notification that service was active 9/3. AceDSL then shipped my modem, which arrived promptly on 9/7. The modem is a discontinued Westell C90-36R516-01, but it connected to the DSLAM flawlessly and quickly. The setup instructions that came with the box were very, very, basic, and looked out date, only including instructions for Win98/Me/2000, and Mac pre OSX (no XP or Mac OSX). A beginner could be confused easily with this. Being experienced, I had no issues, but this is something that the AceDSL folks might want to address.
I had my router configured, and started checking out the service. Pings seem excellent, though I haven't really played enough to get a good feel for the stability you'd want for online gaming. Java speed tests like Speakwasy show 2.5/2.7 down and 680-710 up, however when I put it to the real test (ftp1.optonline.net/test64), it showed a solid 3.0 down. An FTP upload test to my web server showed a solid 760 up. Speeds appear as solid as advertiesed.
8/30/2004 - Ordered the Ace 3000 package, 3.0 down/768 up package for $99/month. Sales rep knew of the package, but wasn't aware that Verizon had started to offer it. He promptly set me up, checked my distance, and setup my email and customer service account, which he then walked me through their online customer service pages and webmail. Order is scheduled to go live 9/7/2004. Will update then.
BOTTOM LINE
Distance to CO: 6870ft.
Speeds achieved: 3.0/760 (tested with NetPerSec)
You'll pay more with AceDSL, or any other Verizon reseller, however, it's worth it if you want a static IP, a server friendly TOS/AUP, and no port blocking. Verizon's static IP offering with no port blocking is actually much more at $129 a month, so consider this a bargain.

Started looking at ISPs to replace my current provider, which has been bought up by the Devil. I went looking for a provider that offers a static IP address with no TCP or UDP port blocking and reasonable technical support, and I landed on Ace.
Since I'm not yet ready to ditch my current provider, and given the history of shoddy lines in the neighborhood, I decided to get Verizon to install a new POTS line. This took about a week, just barely longer than getting the DSL connected!
On Thursday 4/5/07, I tried to place my order on Ace's web site, each time failing when I tried to accept the TOS. After about three tries, I called the number on their error page and spoke with Arkady, who helpfully took my order details over the phone and set me up. I ordered the AceDSL 3000 package, which is 3000/768kbps and one static IP, at a month-to-month total of $69.99/month, under special promotion, for the duration of the service. By the end of the day Friday I had received, signed and returned the credit agreement, and Ace had already placed the Verizon DSL connect order.
I came home tonight, Monday 4/9/07, to find the service already connected and ready to go. While I'm waiting for Ace to send me a new Westell 2110 DSL bridge, I'm using an old ENI SpeedStream 5262 that I got with my SpeakEasy order six years ago!
It sure seems like Ace over-sync'ed the DSL connection, because I'm getting speeds that should be theoretically impossible if I'm sync'ed at 3000/768, like 2808/654!
The next step is to get my Apple Airport base station connected to the service and get *all* my desktop computers going through it. After being stable a few weeks, I'll add a second IP address and move my server over as well. (From there, I'll contemplate canceling my older service!)
