Update 02/15/2000 9:00PM - My Bell Connection stopped, I start scratching my head gee is this BA.NET outage or did my service just switch. Hmmm, I better call the ACECAPE folks where's that number...my phone rings and it Gene from ACECAPE "Hi Will can you change your settings to see if it works?"....change my settings and Presto Chango I'm an ACECAPE customer....needless to say I'm overjoyed. DNS, GATEWAY ping times went down from 70-80 ms to about 22-27 ms, traceroute to yahoo went from 16 hops to 9 hops, throughput right now is what Bell maxed out on about 520Kbs measure on DSL reports I have not done an FTP test yet (not surprised there its really the same DSL equipment at the CO)....news downloads seem a tad slower but still snappy...Yes I'm a happy camper! Too soon to tell about connection reliability but without PPPoE authentication in the picture I should see online stability go up...no more dreaded error 629's....and anybody who can work well within BA's infrastucture gets a 5 in my opinion for install coordination. Keep hope alive.
I'm not sure I should plug ACECAPE over at the Bell Atlantic opinion board....because I'm afraid the poor folks at ACECAPE might get deluded with NYC BA.NET customers....
02/15/2000 Bell was supposed to have switched me to ACECAPE yesterday, they didn't. I wait now for Bell to what they need to in order for me to use ACECAPE.
02/08/2000 I have initiated the switch and will be notified by 02/09 of the switch date....I'll keep everyone posted.
After sending email got a call from them a few days later....and what they have to offer seems very good. Just a bit apprehensive about getting Bell Atlantic touching anything to do with my DSL....its been relatively stable. I'll keep everyone posted about my install if I decide to go with them
Will

I have tried to get rid of my 56K modem for a long time, so I tried any DSL company that was available.
First RedConnect: I dont want to write all night long about how incompetent Red people are. I had to take 4 days off just to have either Red or BA to come to my house. They showed up only two out of 4 times. After painful 9am-5pm waiting periods, nothing would happen. I call up Red, and they dont know where their tech people are, or they just write a trouble ticket to the big brother(BA-Bell Atlantic). And lemme tell u what happens next: Nothing. Oooh and one little secret: when Bell Atlantic tech came to my house on the wrong day( he was supposed to come Tue but came on Wed), he left a message on my answering machine, saying that I cannot have DSL service on my line. When I told this to Red, they wanted me to record the voice msg and then email it to them-which I did. By the way, RedConnect do not offer voice over IP so i had to get another line in my house. (that is also why they charge so$$ooo much).
Then comes along AceCape. they promised to have everyting up and running in 10 days. They did. They didnt charge my CC after I had my DSL service. And when I call them up or email them, they solve problems. Once the DSL service went down, they took care of it within 2 hours. Whether they solved the problem or BA took care of it, I dont care. I know that if I have been with BA or Red, they would have found a way to screw things up. ( and i dont have to get a second line since the DSL service runs on the existing line.)
My only concern is that the modem I have purchased from AceCape is not a well known brand (Next Level Communications). (or at least I havent heard of it - the only other DSL modem I know is from 3Com). That is why I cannot really know if the modem is decent or not. Nevertheless, the manufacturer has a good web site and everytime I test the speed from web pages such as dslreports.com, I get close to 640K results.-which is my max speed)
I have no problems with the modem, and the DSL service is so great that I give them 5 stars... Thank you.

I've been getting a lot of requests about my AceDSL service. Yes, the initial start-up is more expensive, but there is no service contract requirement. If you want to get locked-in to a 1-2 year deal with a company who makes statements like "What's an IP?", fine. They're 50/month deal is for 384/128. If you want comparable 640/90 (AceDsl) service, (at 768/384 with others), that will cost you an additional 30 a month for a total of 80/month. That's an additional 360/year; for what? They want 10/month for additional IP's, whereas ACE asks only 5. On a technical note, ACEDSL download & upload speeds are more than adequate. 5.0MB download in less than a minute, for example. I've been downloading (with an accelerator) around 50-100K/sec (compared to 4K/sec on a modem & 20-40K/sec on T1 at work).
So, am I still happy with ACEDSL after 3 weeks? The answer, an emphatic YES! These guys actually know what they're doing, and get this, they're willing to help you. Sounds amazing, doesn't it? Especially since you don't need to come up with $2000 for a 2 year deal, with penalties if you cancel. Even if you factor in the cost of the modem & start-up, in 2 years you're only paying 1700, $300 less for better service.

I decided for AceDSL, because they promised a very good download speed, no "one year contract", and a DSL-line as fast as in 10 days (that happened, but Bell Atlantic made it 10 hellish days). The price for installation and modem was tough, as I compared with "free installation" offers of other companies. But these providers ask you for a one-year contract - and that's what I don't want, as I have to change my apartment maybe to a location where AceDSL is not availiable in the next months. Now I could start to tell a long story, which is mostly about Bell Atlantic and their absolute incompetence to solve any problem. But, as I'm not so proficient in English, I don't want to bother you with a bad told story. Take a look at the Bell Atlantic forum, I experienced the whole Bell Atlantic torture too: technicians who don't know what to do, a database full of bullshit, lies, dead lines, and so on and so on. The problem: I am a customer of AceDSL and not Bell Atlantic for DSL purposes. Bell Atlantic firms as a "partner" of AceDSL, and I was a little bit suspicious if there is some kind of "bad" connection between them. I'm sure now, there is no such "bad" connection. Bell Atlantic is only sitting on the line, they had to switch me from fiber to copper, and that was too much work for them. AceDSL (and no other provider too) can do the Bell Atlantic work directly on the line. So, Bell took over the regime for about one week and messed it all up. Finally, Bell Atlantic switched me over to the copper line, and I had the internet-connection I ever dreamed of. The download speed is excellent. I experienced no failures on the AceDSL side. Bell Atlantic is out of business now (God thanks!) and so I see no risk anymore for a stable connection. The service of AceDSL is outstanding, as Arkady and Gene (greetings, guys!) are willing to help in any situation, even on the weekend. In our struggle against Bell Atlantic, though, they seemed to been as helpless as I was most of the time. I understand that, because no person outside Bell Atlantic get's control over the hardware. After all, I give AceDSL full points in every category, in spite of Install Co-ordination.

After checking with the various DSL providers in my area, I ended up selecting Acecape because they were the only ones to respond to my technical queries in a timely (almost immediate) fashion, and because their terms of service include no silly restrictions like "no servers of any kind" or "only Macs and PCs". (Well, what if I need to get stuff from my home machine while I'm somewhere else?)
My installation went flawlessly, since I did it myself. After receiving the DSL modem and related cables by mail (no hassles there), I plugged everything in and waited for the "LINE" light to turn on. It came on a day early. If you're the sort of person who doesn't know the difference between the LAN and the LINE, you'll probably end up paying the $50 for on-site installation.
Partnered with Bell Atlantic, you get the standard BA benefits (640/90 @ $49, installation on your existing phone line) without most of the standard BA hassles (being put on hold for extended periods of time when you call "customer service", technical support that doesn't understand technically savvy customers).
I say "most" because I've still been hit with numerous outages, all traceable to BA. The day after my connection was established, a 36-hour outage made it useless. For the next two weeks, my connection ping-ponged up and down, this time due to faulty equipment at the CO. Since then (for the last six weeks), the connection has been pretty stable, with "only" two additional (relatively short) outages.
Acecape support throughout has been outstanding. Instead of waiting on hold listening to bad music or reassurances about how important my call is, I got prompt answers (on weekends, too), whether by phone or email.
If you get a Bell Atlantic line, choose Acecape for your ISP.

Acecape is a class act (yet inexpensive: for a 6-month 640/90 static IP contract, $49/month + $199 modem + $99 installation). I had called iNYC, InfoChannel, and others: all shamelessly bad-mouthed the competing services. In contrast, Acecape was quiet and matter-of-fact. Pre-sales rep Arkady answered my detailed technical questions knowledgeably, and warned me about potential (mostly telco) snags. No technician visited my apartment; Acecape simply shipped me a Next Level Communications modem, RJ-45 Ethernet cable, and phone cord, line splitter, and voice filter. Installation was idiotproof, and took 5 minutes. When I placed my order, Arkady estimated that service would start in 10 business days; in fact, it took just six (6) days -- and possibly less, because when I powered up my new modem several hours after UPS delivery, DSL was already present! Acecape doesn't invoice you until your service actually works properly. They're eager to accommodate non-MS operating systems: smart tech rep Alex spent a good hour or two (until 11:30pm) debugging OS/2 configuration (which, BTW, is absolutely stable); other Acecapers run flavors of *nix. I'm getting 18-30ms ping on the first hop to Acecape's DNS. "Non-logged download" (from DSLReports) is consistently 480-490Kbps, but Netscape often reports 560-580Kbps (an average, so the peak rate must be close to 640). In short, it couldn't be smoother, easier, or more satisfying. Highly recommended.
