I'm in the process of moving out of Philly. I've been a very satisfied customer of CYBERONIC for many years. So, I called them up asking if it was possible to move my DSL to my new home. Unfortunately, the sales rep said that my new location was to far and they were unable to setup an ADSL line. They suggested that I try SDSL but the price was way to high and I would have to pay to installation charges, etc. just like a new customer. Go figure, after close to three years with them. So they are going out the door. I must have spent close to 4 hours calling DSL companies and no one was able to help me. (I needed a static IP Address) They all said I was to far. Anyway, I was just about to give up when I found ACEDSL. I called them up and the sales rep. Took a few minutes to check my info and told me YES! I could be setup with ADSL in about 5 to 7 days. So I place my order on 9/20, but they could not start the install process because Verizon had not yet updated the service records of my new line. So finally after three days the records updated and ACEDSL was able to start the process. I have a install due date of 10/05/2004 so, I'll keep ya'll posted.

Well I'm going to make a long story short. Put in order for Ace DSL Live 768/128 and a westell modem 07/19/2001 and didn't go through because Verizon was still on my line even though they never gave me service. Called Verizon and they actually disconnected me when they said they would at the end of July. Called Ace the same night to start order again. Gave me SRD date of Aug 27. Well I got service the 8/15 and have been surfing ever since.

    Just an update...

Haven't had any problems with connections in a very long time, since before my original review. Connection speeds are as-promised, day or night. Still no PPPoE

My one criticism still remains, and that is that they throttle connection to the usenet news server at around 480 kbps. If they'd open up this pipe they would be perfect.

    Original Review:
I've been with Acedsl for a few years now. Had some reliability issues a few years ago, which were all caused by Verizon, but it's been solid for a tleast the last year or so. Secure webmail was an excellent addition.

What else to say? I wouldn't still be with them if I didn't think they were excellent

Review updated -- below is my 2001 review.

Recently moved across the street (same Verizon CO), and the move was handled very well and timely, 3 days ahead of promised schedule. Total downtime during the move was 7 days, the time it took Verizon to reconnect the phone and then DSL.

I have since stopped running public web services from home, so downgraded to usual ADSL 768/128. The speed is as advertised, and there was very little downtime.

    =======

I moved recently to NYC and was extremely disappointed with my previous provider (Telocity) in handling the move. To their excuse, though, Northpoint went under at the same time (it can be further said to their credit that in California I had no problems with Telocity service). A month later they still had no idea how they were going to provide DSL to me, and I called AceDSL. They connected me a week before their original promised time, so it took a little over 2 weeks. Bandwidth is exactly as advertised (SDSL at 384). No problems to report so far.

5 months later, I find them overall excellent. A few times they were down while trying to maintain the network, usually for a very brief period and mostly late at night. Otherwise, I always get the promised 384kbps up and down.

They always answer the phone and e-mail and are generally very helpful. Even more helpful is the fact that you seldom need their help. Trivial things that took months and hours on the phone with Telocity (like update DNS record for my node) were done instantly over the phone.

After I cancelled my account in favor of DSL through Covad, I received a phone call from that tech that everyone who writes a review of Acedsl loves. He wanted to know why I wanted to cancel my account, so I told him that Covad was able to give me twice the download and upload capacity for the same price. I didn't mention that I was also getting 5 IP addresses for the same price as 2 extra ones fro acedsl. He tried to lower my price, but it was too late, I had already placed the order. After I told him that he was very rude to me and to add insult to injury, I came home and I couldn't access the internet from my computer! I looked at the DSL modem and the lights weren't blinking so I decided to try my other computer that I usually kept behind NAT on a free IP that I happened to have that wasn't in use at the time of my getting my internet connection blocked. To my surprise, I was able to connect to the internet. They had somehow blocked my ethernet address and I emailed support. They maintained that my IP wasn't being blocked and that it had to have been some misconfiguration on my end. They even wasted my time for about half an hour today to try to troubleshoot the problem with me assuming that I didn't know what I was doing. As I was speaking to the tech (this one was actually very polite and spoke well) I made it clear that my blocked computer was a linux box and that there was no way that I had accidentally clicked something in a preference pane. We tried restarting xinetd which did nothing as I knew it wouldn't. Either this tech was covering for somebody, or they were able to block my IP from the router without it showing up on this tech's screen. I wrote a threatening email to them demanding that they resolve the problem or I would write a bad review on dslreports and/or call the better business bureau. I got home tonight, and my dsl was back on. Maybe that preference on my end that I had misconfigured had magically changed itself back.

I'll make this short and sweet. (OK, maybe not so short.)

I've used AceDSL for roughly the last 2 1/2 years. I have 2 other ISPs for DSL as well. I require the redundancy on different subnets and backbones.

I also manage DSL accounts for clients at their offices, so I have experience with different providers.

Overall, I've been happy with AceDSL. There have been bumps in the road as there are with all ISP's. It's the nature of the industry. However, AceDSL has been consistantly the most reliable I've used in the last few years.

I appreciate that when I ask a question, even if I don't like the answer, the AceDSL reps have given me an honest, complete and straight answer. This has not always been the case with the other providers I use.

Ace's customer service has improved greatly in the last few years, and because of this, I am signing a client up for their newer 1.5/1.5 SHDSL service.

They've already warned me there are install delays due to (who else?) My local Telco.

I know it's true because I've recently changed addresses and the same type of delays that effect the SHDSL installation occured to both my home phone service and home DSL installations from different ISP's. All were due to the local Telco, according to the reps AT the local telco.

Major delay: It takes my local telco a number of days for thier "automated system" to create/update a Customer Service Record (CSR). This alone knocked one of my installations off by 5 days. Turning a 5 day install process into a 10 day install process.

Anyway, I've also found AceDSL willing to work out some customizations to my services (E-mail and whatnot), and their webmail is one of the best I've encountered from any provider to date. Clean, efficient, easily managed and relatively effective spam management.

They also provide reverse DNS for my Static IP's. Both of which are bones of contention with me when it comes to service from the local telco. These make me appreciate Ace even more.

My only complaint/wish to date is that the upload speed on the basic DSL service of 1600/128 were a little better. Remote graphical management at 128kb while other services are using upstream bandwidth is annoying. However, from what I understand, this is a configuration of the local telco that Ace goes through.
I do not have a serious need to increase the bandwidth on this line, as it would increase cost. However, it would be nice. Otherwise the service is great.

I'll let you all know how the 1.5/1.5 SHDSL installation and service works out.

    -end

I have had them for 3 years and here is how I rate the last two.
I initially ordered 768/128 but was bumped to 1600/128 when it came available. (w/3 static IPs with no PPPOE . I do alot of downloading and that is exactly what I am getting and sometimes bursts higher. Acedsl part of the service is reliable and tech support is good.

The initial install was fast and without issue in less than 2 weeks since ordering. Pre-sales was excellent.

The first year they had problems with their upstream provider for about 6 months but they resolved that and tech support also did a 100% turn around since then.

My only problem is not with Acedsl but the fact that no matter who I use for DSL they all use Verizon's CO. Unfortunately I am the last house on my block and when anyone new moves in Verizon has messed up my DSL lines. Verizon also had some recurring issues at my CO that effects everyone in my area no matter what DSL provider they have.

However Acedsl has been quick to respond, follow-up and escalate with Verizon when this happens and I get real feedback about what is going on. This unlike another DSL provider I have where my trouble tickets seem to go into a black hole when all my lines go down.

    UPDATE: 08/25/2003

Service and support is absolutely outstanding! DSL line uptime & reliability about as good as a T1, at a fraction of the price. The news server hiccups every once in a while, but overall AceDSL is an outstanding value for the price and what they offer.

    ***************************************

Okay, I was a little skeptical about a small local company and the service that they could provide, but now I can admit it: "I was wrong" These guys know what they are doing. I had a horrible experience with Telocity, where I almost sued them for not releasing my line after I canceled my service with them.

*** UPDATE: Telocity / DirectTV DSL went out of business a few days ago. What a surprise, eh? ***

Read this: »We are Liberated (LONG Post)

*** My AceDSL connection is rock steady as always ***

AceDSL is the exact opposite of Telocity. Highly competent techs answer the phone directly after a very short wait (1-2min) and they don't feed you bull and ask you to re-boot your system without a reason. Even though there was a short outage couple of nights ago, they answered right a way and told me that they are working on it, but unlike Telocity they really were working on it and got it fixed shortly. I work on high-speed data telecommunications for a living so I know that there will always be some problems, but the difference is how they are handled. I just hope that they service stays as good as more people sign-up with them.

I've signed up for the Live service (768down and 128up). I get 735down and 125up, 9 out of 10 times at »nyc.speakeasy.net . That's about as good as it gets with anyone anywhere. I have optimized the registry and in-house cabling to achieve that, but those results are very constant and do not seem to be affected by the time of the day. My suggestion to anyone thinking about getting DSL service in the Tri-State area is go with these guys. It is amazing how a company can use Verizon's lines and achieve a totally different and positive result.

I have been a client of Ace for almost three years and I felt compelled to write after my blackout experience. My DSL was down (of course) due to the blackout. After my power came back up, the DSL was still down (Verizon's fault, not Ace's) so I gave them a call to just check in. They verified trouble with the CO on 79th Street. When my DSL still wasn't up one day later, I shot them an email. They rang on the phone almost immediately to let me know the line was, in fact, up. Tech support walked me through my router setting that reset when the power went out, and I was back in business. I was very impressed that they called me and were so helpful even though the problem was on my end and not theirs. I cannot recommend them enough.

FWIW now, the install process went smoothly as well, they had me up and running five days before their target date. They also offer static IP addresses which the big cable companies wanted to charge me an arm and a leg for.

This review is mostly a rant and it comes from a user who will switch to cable modems soon. The reason? Verizon! I will explain in a second...

First, of all, I want to say that AceDSL provides a pretty good product, at good prices. Their connection is pretty solid, and they don't make you sign a yearly contract. For that reason alone, I signed up for them. They also offer a static IP, and they are mostly bare bones...something I'm a fan of. I'm an ex-Verizon DSL user, and I was fed up with their incompetant tech support, and PPPOE, and I was pleasantly surprised by how responsive Ace was to my emails/calls. I wrestled for months with VZ to resolve the simplest issues, but Ace was great. They would even call me back to update me on issues.

So, why am I switching from Ace to cable modems? SImply b/c of one reason...Verizon! The thing is, AceDSL sits under the thumb of Verizon, and they can't do much about certain technical issues without Verizon getting in the way. When I was a VZ customer, I had to tolerate long downtimes, compounded with incompetant work (they had to redo their repairs multiple times). They pissed me off so much, I escaped to Ace. However, I recently found out that just going to Ace doesn't mean that you escaped from Verizon....

To summarize my story, a few weeks ago, I wanted to upgrade my existing Ace account to the new speeds they started offering. They assured me that there would be no downtime, and that it would be simple. Unfortunately, a few months before this, my phone number was changed. This, for some reason did not affect my DSL service, and I was concerned why this would be. A quick chat with a representativee from Ace said that was abnormal, my service should've been affected. Normally, they would then adjust their settings (via Verizon) to account for my new phone number, and all would be well, but since it was working fine without any adjustments, nothing would need to be done.

So, to get back to the issue of upgrading my DSL service...since my phone number was changed, yet my dsl wasn't modified to account for it...Verizon started throwing a fit that my DSL account didn't match my phone number, and that they cannot fulfill Ace's request to upgrade my service. In order to rectify the situation, and upgrade my service, I would have to endure some downtime. I gave Ace my permission to go ahead, knowing that the downtime would be for about 3-10 business days.

However, the story doesn't end there. During this downtime, my dial tone disappeared...I could only assume it was b/c of the DSL upgrade request. Ace said that I must contact Verizon, and have them repair the line. Ace can't do anything about it. So fine...I did so and a repair guy came in (my wife had to stay home so he could gain access...a waste of a day for her), and they repaired it. Not too long after, Ace informed me my DSL was up, and my wife confirmed it. A brief speed test confirmed my speeds were higher (not as high as I hoped). I planned on going home that night, and retesting when the internet would be less busy.

However, I never got a chance to do that...b/c when I got home, my dial tone was dead AGAIN! Obviously, my DSL was dead too, being affected as well. So, enraged at this point, I called VZ, and AGAIN, they dispatched a guy to my place. AGAIN, my wife had to stay home (another waste of her time), and many hours later, they managed to fix the line. HOWEVER, my wife couldnt' confirm that the DSL was working.

So, the next day, I call Ace, and they do some things on their end, and voila! My dsl is working....EXCEPT that my speeds are the EXACT same as they were before! The whole PURPOSE of this saga was to upgrade my speed, and now I had nothing to show for it! So, I called Ace again, told them that my speed was the same as before. The guy did a quick speed test, confirmed what I said, and told me that they would do an upgrade. (Perhaps the upgrade was botched???) He said that that there would be NO DOWNTIME - as promised the first time (if you recall).

Happy, that I would finally get my new speeds, I ended the phone call with Ace. However, my optimism was unwarranted...for a few minutes later, Ace called me back. The guy said he contacted Verizon about my speed upgrade...and this is what Verizon told him....

They COULDN'T see my modem on their network...they think I don't have access to the internet! If, for some reason, I want to have the new speeds, I will have to sufffer downtime AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At this point, I was furious! Essentially, this whole saga I've been threw has gotten me nowhere! I'm at square one again! I'm at the same speed, with a strange anamoly on my DSL account with Verizon that they are throwing a fit about! I had endured 2 weeks of downtime, and there was more to come!

Well, at this point, my wife was pissed as well. She had already wasted 2 days of Verizon idiocy, and she didn't want to risk losing the phone again. Yeah, yeah, in theory, our voice line shouldn't be affected, but it WAS affected...twice I might add.

So, essentially, I told Ace that I want to KEEP my current speeds, and forget about the upgrade. Only later, did my wife and I decide that cable is the way to go. ANYTHING that is not ruled under the harsh thumb of Verizon is worth it.

I realize that all this may not be Ace's fault...but it doesn't matter at this point. They are (unfairly?) ruled by the actions and incompetance of VZ. I left VZ b/c of their incompetance, and I found out that I haven't really escaped it at all.

Cable modem...here I come! Your offerings can't be worse than what VZ has to offer!
