This is a long review dealing with 3 ISPs, but relates my overall experience with AceDSL. For those who want only the conclusion, skip to the last paragraph.
I have been an AceDSL customer since 8/2001. Prior to Ace, I had a 768/768 SDSL line with Ultracom (which became Exario) which sold my line to DSL.net. I decided to switch to Ace because I didn't really need SDSL 768/768 and DSL.net was having way to many outages at the time.
Setting up everything with Ace was painless, and I really enjoyed the speed increase in downloads (1600/384 ADSL). Three months were awesome, then I started to notice the speed degrading, service outages, problems with email etc. Many people were on this board were going nuts about the same problems. Calls to technical support were always answered promptly, but had the same response "we're having problems with our routers, we'll be back up shortly." Further complaints yielded the response that they were switching to "above.net" and all problems should be resolved by the end of the month - which was December at this point.
After still having problems in January, I decided to try Cloud9 simultaneously with Ace. I am very happy that I didn't just cancel Ace at this point, because it was just around then that Ace was getting better. Setup & customer support were very good at Cloud9, reliability was also good, but the speed was slower than Ace. Also, under very heavy traffic, I would lose the connection with Cloud9 (but would not with Ace). I think that this largely has to do with the fact that Cloud9 uses PPPoe, which places some overhead on the connection.
I tried Ace & Cloud9 simultaneously for February. For the entire month, Ace was never offline, and was always faster than Cloud9. Latency was also better with Ace, but the difference was small. A minor annoyance with Cloud9 was the lack of being able to set up multiple mailboxes via a web interface (although they had a web interface to control your single box - I'm sure had I stayed with Cloud9, I could have called tech support to set up the additional mailboxes). By this time I got Nexland's dual WAN capable router so I wouldn't have to switch lines and settings each time I wanted to test an alternate ISP.
Around the end of February I canceled Cloud9, and sure enough Ace experienced some outages (again problems with a router). So I thought I would try Earthlink with a static IP address, which was going to be cheaper than Ace, and maybe be more reliable. Earthlink took almost a month to set up - Cloud9 hadn't released the line, Earthlink doesn't ship the start-up kit until the line is activated, then Earthlink had problems internally with the shipping of the start-up kit, etc.)
Well I'm currently running both, side by side, and Ace wins again. Ace has had only about 15 minutes of outages total in the last month, and these occur between 1am-6am, and haven't presented any problems for me (I wouldn't have even known they happened without line monitoring.) Earthlink is slower, again because of PPPoe, and has been down 2.5 hours in the past two days. Their tech support claimed a general problem in LA and also in the NYC area. I will continue to monitor Earthlink, but their service probably won't get any faster becuase of PPPoe and even when Ace was having problems, I was never down 2.5 hours in 2 days.
To conclude this long review, I have found Ace to be more consistent, reliable and faster than either Cloud9 or Earthlink (all 1600/384 ADSL). With Ace I get 1498 to 1540 downstream consistently, and with the others 1159 to 1248. Upstream for Ace is 357-380, and 322-367 with Cloud9 and Earthlink. I think PPPoe is useless to the end-user. Not only does it take up bandwidth, but it slows down the connection process when connections are lost and need to be recovered, and requires extra steps to set up. While I had quite a bit of trouble with Ace while they were working out their problems switching to "above.net," this situation seems to now be resolved. I experience no loss of speed during business hours. Having used DSL since July-1999 with Ultracom/Exario/DSL.net then Ace and Cloud9 and Earthlink, I strongly believe that Ace is the best. The combination of high speed, low latency and no PPPoe make websites pop up noticeably faster than any of the other services I have mentioned above. I strongly recommend AceDSL to anyone in the NY metro area.
Notes:
-- about 7000 feet from the central office
-- using Speedstream modems (5360 and 5260)
-- Nexland ISB Pro800 Turbo (dual WAN router)
-- I am definitely a customer and not an employee of AceDSL

I logged onto this site to check on reviews for ace again, because I have been disappointed that they were listed as 24/7 but in actuality this was just an answering service and the times I needed help and placed calls I got either return calls much later or none at all. Weekend/night customer service extremely important to me since I am rarely home during the day. I went with Ace because it got good reviews on this site, I'm now shocked at reading the hostility and punitive actions made by the company to a customer, rude as he may have been. In fact, I'm horrified at reading this. When I was able to get hold of customer service, they were reasonably helpful, however, getting hold of them in off hours for me has been unsuccessful.
As far as downtime, I don't feel qualified to comment on that, except that the times that I have used my connection, since Sept. -- I have noticed it was down once. I don't have much of a complaint in that dept.
I was not entirely satisfied with my connection -- I didn't know it had been turned on and I was being billed, but they were not willing to give me a break. I'm not sure if I should have been checking every day to see if it was turned on or what the protocol is for this, but it did leave me with a bad feeling.
Re: customer support I am not a dsl techie at all, and rely on customer support for problems. I suppose my bottom line here is that (1) night/weekend callback has been very bad in my experience. (2) After reading how this company responded to complaints -- defensively and actually cutting off a complaining customer's service (abusive or not), I'm almost afraid to make a complaint for fear that they'll cut off my service -- and that certainly is not "providing service."

I just wanted to update everyone on my experience with Acedsl over the 2 years I was with them. Overall, the service was excellent. I had a couple of days of downtime, but 99% of the time, reliability, pings, and packetloss were good. The couple of times my connection actually was dead, ace was able to get verizon to quickly repair things. I've had to cancel my account with them since I've moved to a new, all be it temporary, home. As soon as I am more permanantly settled, I will go with ace again.

I have been with ace over a year and they have had there moments. I am a programmer by trade. So, I know a little more than the average home user. When I first signed on with them the line going down was a daily event. A week ago I decided to do a little testing of my line in order to see if I would stay on with ace or move on to another ISP. Here are my findings- LINE SPEEDS WHERE GOOD ( I AM ON 384/384 SERVICE WITH ACE ) 373/381 Being the best test and 365/301 being the worst. So, that's not so bad. If fact it's pretty dam good. Testing of line connection reliability for one week. AFTER A ONE WEEK PERIOD THEY ONLY WENT DOWN TWICE. Once for about an hour in afternoon and then for about 20 min in the eve. I have been with other ISP's and going down twice in a week is OK, not Great - just OK. That is my only hang-up with ace. It has greatly improved in the past year! So, I have decided to stay on with them. If they start to screw up again I am gone, but for now I have to say KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! I cant comment on there customer support, because I never used it. All I need is the line and the IP# and I can handle the rest. I also can't comment of the news servers, because I don't use them. Oh- almost forgot? Mail servers run fine, never had a problem with them as long as the line was up and running.

upadated at Mar 1, 2002, Blah... I got at least 15+ disconnections just for today... going to call tech support tomorrow and guess they give me the same reasons again... any good alternative? static ip and complete new server.... get little upset for this ISP already ....
___________________________________________________________________ I had AceDSL for more than year and half, recent service was really put me in nightmare. After went through intellispace routing problem, now I face even wrost suitation, I got disconnected at least 15 times a day...
Guess they are always on but not always works....
Every time i called tech support, what they tell me is to check the phone line connection. Please! I have the service more than year and half already, works fine until several weeks ago, and now you tell me because my phone line is not connected correctly?
Their news server is also a joke, down 2 days and works for one day... *sigh*

my client had ACE dsl for a couple of months and everything was working fine. then things started happening. after several days of denying everything they claimed that the DNS servers were switched.OK, that can cause problems. updated still not ok. ran some tracert's came back with 9876ms etc.... Was told that it is our routers fault. now the router was working fine. blew it out and reflashed firmware, worked for 10 minutes and then slow again. now the speeds are fluctuating from almost 10000ms to 2000ms. instead of working with a client and caring about keeping a customer, when i ask to speak to a manager he screams at me and then hangs up on me. this company is completely ridiculous. after the call i came here and found so many articles about this guy named Arkady. this guy must be an owner or something because there are so many letters about him complaining and him attacking people, i do not how he still has a job. anyways we are switching ASAP and hopefully nobody has the same bad experience as i did. hey you never know maybe it was the router, maybe it wasnt, but fluctuating speeds , aahh i dont know????????????????

I was an AceDSL customer for about 2 months 7/2001 9/2001. In that time I experienced two kind of problems. 1) I was lousing sync at my modem (3) or more times. 2) I had connectivity issues not related to problems with sync !!
I just want to make some things clear. I wrote many good post About AceDSL when I had it (at the beginning of that service), some people could sign-up because of it. Three days ago I decided to write that my experience at the end with AceDSL was no so good. ( see previews post)
Today Arkady make it personal. First he accused me that I was not a customer of AceDSL. Then when he find out who I am he shows my real name without my authorization from me on public forum!!!!!!
Beware posters you are not allowed to write that you have or had a bed experience with AceDSL. Your personal information could be in danger!!!
Now About service: Installation process was very smooth. It took any 8 days and I was up and running. First three weeks very smooth short outages but it happens at almost every ISP. After (3) weeks I lost sync. It was Friday night so of course I have to wait 2 days to speak to someone from AceDSL. There was no one at the office during weekend.
They force me to admit that I have bed lines ( Yes it is possible I thought), so I asked them to send a technician from Verizon. I ask them to make an appointment for Saturday, but Verizon technician did not show up on Saturday. He (Verizon) called me on 7.00 am Sunday!!! that he is 10 minutes from my house and would like to check my lines. Of course I sent him back, who weak-up people at 7.00 am on Sundays.
Now I have some words to AceDSL administration.
DSLR site is a place to share opinions, purpose of that site is not to promote your business. It is only for people information so AceDSL administration do not attack bad reviews let them go and after you will solve yours problems I am sure that many people will post a reviews for A+.
I checked my line after that and it is in perfect condition. Why do you (AceDSL) think I was waiting that long to write that bad words about your service. Because I believed in AceDSL now see people what I get back!! (Please read my previews discussion).
You could not resolve problems between : me Verizon and you. That is a point Arkady!!
So now lets blame my lines or Verizon. When I order a service I need full support & help from you. I do not have time to resolve problems which you have to solve with your partners.
- I have Network Access Solution DSL at work. One day afternoon a Verizon technician disconnected my DSL cables. So after that I called NAS and the next day at 7.00 am. I have both technician in front of a company door after (2) hours problem was solved. That's why I think that AceDSL is not for business.
My problem with sync does not change a fact that additionally AceDSL internal servers have a connectivity issues.
So problem # 2 is connectivity issues. That problem was not related to a problem at Verizon CO or my line.
One more thing AceDSL does not provide 'real SDSL service it is simply ADSL service with capped downstream speed to be equal with upstream. It is not only AceDSL who name it as SDSL so be careful. That's why many business think that their SDSL service is cheap.
My friend has AceDSL and when I am in his house I can see that AceDSL steel has a connectivity issues. But I will not write about it.
It is my personal opinion, I do not work for any competitors of AceDSL. You could not count that reviews because I am not a current customer. But I steel fell that I have a right to share my experience.
Final opinion. Good ISP is a that one who could solve all kind of problems including problems between CO and apartments, they should take care of it not dismiss it In their words 'It is not for our side we do not care, go some place else because you are making a problem to us, not a profit!!!
I was ready to get AceDSL some day again, but after that personal attack from Arkady I WILL NEVER sign for their service.
PS: I have never attacked Arkady as a person I only expressed my opinion about service. People who want to post about AceDSL BEWARE Arkady is scanning everyone who is a problem to his company on this site. Now he has to find out who is my friend.
Last word: I was not online that what counted for me, I do not know who was responsible for that. One thing I know for sure AceDSL did not help me. --- AceDSL you have to know that even if a problem is not in your interior network but partners who provide uplink or Verizon it is a problem who create a BAD opinion about you.
Thank You Zigor2
I forgot to write that I got sync after one week and again after 2 weeks of service it was gone again. Than again I got it back for 2 weeks and lost it for ever after that I decided to cancel my service.
Moderators please do not delete that post because I named one of their bosses. He shows my real name at public forum first that's what forced me to write that review.

I had AceDSL for over 1.5 years in two different locations, I was on of their earlier Zyxel Router customers than the latter hoarde of the Westell customers that seems to be posting now.
Setup was quick and easy, although I don't know who mixed up the phone number in my other location. Regardless of which line it came in on, it was great service up untill the day of termination which for me was Dec,31,2001.
Reading this forum has made me consider one thing however. Alot of people who take their time to post reviews and complain about this and that make no technical or social effort to understand what is involved in bringin them this service.
I also understood that here everything is about the Bottom Line, the Result, not how you get there but what is happening at this moment in time.
DSL is best effort service, the hoarde of disappointed users who clain they were doing Gaming, Home Hosting, PPTP tunnels and other such things did not even have the technical capacity to understand the difference between Latency, Packet Loss and what bandwidth or broadband really mean.
DSL esp ADSL is not intended to be a T1 service and you cannot expect it to be, anything that is posted can be only RELATIVE to the DSL realm, You simply cannot get very realtime service when you're bridging Ethernet across ATM UBR.
If you had bad service with Ace then I'm sorry, but it does not give you the right to go and attack people who actually post anything good, just because your view of the world has to be the definitive one.
As far as the maintainers of DSLR and where they are looking when this forum has obviosly and blatantly has been trolled by some alterior motivated party, well I guess they are to busy.
My experience with Ace was GOOD. END, Period, No Discussion.
ac00kie , Infinitey, HomeHosting, AdrianD and all other trolling parties are more than welcome to reply to this.
As far as Cloud9 that some of them promote so blatantly, welp Cloud 9 requested that I submit $99 dollars to them before sign-up, their contracts and sign-up PDF sheets were more than vague, "may or may not require deposit" etc. Even though everyone knows any VZ affiliated party does not take a $99 credit risk when signing you up.
AceCape was honest and upfront about what they do and what they do not do. How much it costs and what are the contact terms were.
Prime Motivations for people to post Useless Crap (as the colo-cation guy did) are always to hype someone else, to skew ratings, or to get a refund.
A big See-YA goes out to PHEAR, IRC L00ZERS, LAMAZ, Dot-Coms, hataz and l33t NetBSD hax0rs.

I have AceDSL connection for almost two years now - since May 2000. I cannot really comment on their DNS/Mail/News as I do my own dns/mail/mews/web. Static IP is very important for me. In these two years there were several major downtimes (for two of them I can say it was Verizon - 100%, because I called Verizon and asked - and they admitted problems in their equipment). Even though I am not at home at day time, I am constantly connected through various methods (ssh, mail etc) from work, and very rarely I loose connection - I mean very rarely). Ive seen a lot of bad reviews recently about AceDSL, and I truthfully dont know what your problem is. In my long experience with AceDSL I did not have such problems, may be because I work in the industry and know what I am doing? I worked in Customer Service for major storage company and I know that sh!t happens even with million dollar equipment, so I try to look philosophically at very, very minor outages here and there.
I also run NATD for several computers in use by my family, so the day usage is also high. If anything happens I usually get call/email right away ("i am the point main"), but I do not get such calls for internet connection (as i said may be once a month).
My latest speed test: 707/116 kbps
and this is connection statistics for last 3 month (since I started use NetSaint): Service State Statistics State Time % Time OK 125d 3h 1m 43s 99.3% WARNING 0d 0h 0m 0s 0.0% UNKNOWN 0d 0h 49m 17s 0.0% CRITICAL 0d 21h 40m 4s 0.7% All States 126d 1h 31m 4s 100.0%
note that critical also includes - playing with firewall, turning modem off, rewiring the cables which go into modem/NIC etc.
PS i wrote this review to give hope to guys who gave up - Never give up, never surrender.
