I picked up LocalISP after moving into NYC and from day 1, they did a good job with communication. I had no problems when I wanted to renumber my network and I didn't get "what is that?" when I asked them to put a few PTR records in their DNS.
At one point, I thought I had a problem with my line (turned out to be software) and they sent out a test CPE for me to try.
They are not the slickest presentation, but they are good solid service.

We ordered 384/384 business grade ADSL through LocalISP. We received the equipment in 2 weeks and that same day our line was active. The first day our line was a little slower then the 384/384 so we called tech support. They had the problem resolved within 6 hours
now we even get faster speeds at times. This line is extremely reliable
it has yet to go down. We have gone through many ISPs including Monmouth Internet, UUNet, and Qwest. None of them come close to the quality and service we get from LocalISP. If you can-go with LocalISP!!
*****
We've had this line for about 1 year now. We run a Citrix server and a mail server behind this DSL line so it needs to be up 24x7. I can tell you that I am VERY impressed with the quality of this line from Local ISP. We have only had one time when the line was down for approx. 5 min. Once again, if you can go with Local ISP...do it!!..it's worth every penny!!

We've had this line for over 2 years now. We have been upgraded in speed. I am still VERY impressed with the quality of service from Local ISP. We still would highly recommend Local ISP, it is definately worth every penny.

Service was installed 1 week after ordered just as promised. We ordered their 3Mb/768Kb service for $99/month with a static IP and a router. I had one of their techs come out to configure my computers since I'm not very good at it. Tech had the whole office up and running in a few minutes and helped fix some other problems we were having with our printer and one of our PC's. I was very pleased with the tech! We've been up for about 3 months now with no problems at all. Local-ISP also set up our company e-mail on their server and took care of registering our domain for us. Everything has gone very smoothly and the performance is excellent. I would certainly recommend them!

I'm a business DSL customer as well as a webhosting client. The service to my office was activated quickly and with no hassle. To date both the DSL connection and the web hosting have been solid. No complaints. Tech support has been there when I needed them and even worked through a couple of Verizon (TelCo) issues on my behalf. Local-ISP has been great.
I am a former Northpoint and Rhythms (and various other ISPs) customer and can honestly say I'm satisfied (finally!) with the service I am receiving.

Local ISP is a central New Jersey firm that was refered to me by my computer consultant. They have been extremely reliable in handling all of my requests in a timely fashion. It is vital to my business to have internet access available to my employees 24/7 and Local ISP has been there for me 100% of the time.

I am a DirecTV DSL refugee. When I got the initial message about DTVDSL shutting down, I set up an account with Verizon Online DSL as a backup on my primary phone line(DTV was on my second line). Since Verizon uses PPPoE and blackholes port 80, and I have a personal server along with using services that require a registered(read static) IP address, I decided to find another service that offers the same sort of service that I was used to with DTVDSL.
Originally I tried to sign up with Cyberonic after seeing their offer here for 1500/768 for $39.95/mo. with 18 month commitment, or $49.95/mo. month-to-month. The problem was trying to reach them via phone or email. I took that as an omen and did some more poking around here to see what was available in my area.
I decided to call Local-ISP and spoke to a knowledgeable sales rep. He explained the services available and their costs and I told him that I would mull it over for a couple of days. He said he would mention to Sales that I was possibly transitioning from DTVDSL.
A few days later I emailed Local-ISP and said I wanted to proceed with their 768/128 service. The terms are $49.95/mo. with a yearly commitment and equipment costs(billed for $253.89 on 1/24/03). I was told that the service would be transitioned around 2/5 and that my equipment would be preshipped to avoid downtime. I also found out my new IP information before the equipment arrived, convenient for entering into my router/switch ahead of time. Customer Service is responsive via email. I received the equipment on Monday of that week, then tried connecting on 2/5. Service was not up yet, but DTVDSL still was so I figured I would try the next day. When I got home DTV was not working, so I plugged in the new equipment again(BestData DSL modem). After it synched I tried the connection and it was up. Back to the box the big grey DTV brick went, now a souvenir of my early days with DSL. The connection is solid, in approximately two weeks it has worked fine. In comparison, the Verizon DSL on my other line is slow.
On the not-so-good scale, email to tech support results in an automated reply which in and of itself is not bad, but no real reply after a number of days(sent message on 2/10, resent on 2/14, received reply 2/20) is not particularly a confidence-builder. Fortunately my issue was not a critical one(questions about email and FTP speed test) and the info in the reply was enough to save me from having to make a call.
High marks for Pre-Sales, Install Coordination and reliability. Tech support gets neutral rating for above-mentioned issue, and Mail/DNS/News neutral for lack of authentication support for sending mail(I often check/send mail from a client's LAN or that of my workplace, but I have worked around that limitation by using the outgoing mail server when available). No news server. But reliability is what matters most to me, and so far it looks like Local-ISP has that fully covered.

Now that I've got the service (768/128), it's great. The installation wasn't bad, either... it took less than a week.
However, getting Verizon service removed from my line was a little more painful. According to them, they were in the middle of some "conversion" and it took them almost 3 weeks to get the line cleared so I could install the new service.
They shipped me a modem the same day that the service was installed, and I plugged it in and it worked great for about a week. It suddenly stopped working, so I called their tech support line (not toll free :-( ) and someone picked up almost immediately. They talked me through a troubleshooting process and managed not to laugh at me when the problem turned out to be a bad telephone hooked up in the basement. Unplugged it, everything worked great again. I actually get speeds higher than 786/128, usually 8-something by 130-140. They gave me an address for their own ftp test that they provide to check speeds and it came out about the same as the dslreports tests. They also told me about their news server when I asked, because it says they don't have one on their website. I guess they just don't update their site very often. (It's really good, too... over 100,000 groups and it goes back over 2 weeks!)
I love having a static IP... I used to use a dynamic Dns service with Verizon DSL, but it was a real pain. Now I can use terminal services to get into my computer at home any time, and I keep an FTP site running so that I can get files whenever I need them (already it's saved my a** once).
Not to mention, I'm so glad to get rid of Verizon. The "always-on" service that you have to sign on to just doesn't work for me (especially since it seems that their authentication server went down quite frequently.)
Bottom line, I like it.

I was an unhappy Bell Atlantic/Verizon user. I "cancelled" them and went with Telocity via Northpoint.
Several months later, Telocity says they tried and failed to install my line because Verizon never released it. I immediately call Verizon and learn that "cancel" and "release" are independent operations. Releasing a line is an Olympic event that happens once every 4 years. They promised to release my line.
The next day, Northpoints goes bust. Telocity cancels my order. I am re-ordered via Verizon. Another month goes by and Telocity cancels my order again: Verzion is not accepting new customers in my area.
So I use the great tools here at DSLR, and find an ISP using Rythms, LocalISP.
I made an initial phone call to order service and then did the back and forth over email. My emails were answered right away, and right away, LocalISP made it clear that Rythms and Verizon were going to be the slowdowns and to try and be patient. I was very patient.
On the day of installation, Rythms fails, because I already have DSL on that line. Its my nemesis, Verizon. I called Verizon, it seems that the piece of paper that had my phone number to be release was used to clean up a coffee spill. I was told 10 business days to call back. I asked, "Did you pull a rabbit out of a hat and the rabbit said, 'April 10th'"? Finally, after 7+ months from when I cancelled my service, Verzion released my line. Once that was done, I was up and running on LocalISP/Rythms in less than two calendar weeks.
About a month later, Rythms goes bust. I read it here. I email LocalISP and was told that Verzion would be taking over. There would be a two-to-three week transition period.
Verizon goes out to the line and finds that Rythms never released it. Even though Rythms is out of business, my line cannot be released by anyone but them. This means that my line is hooked forever.
Luckily, I had a second phone line from my 56k days!!!! Verizon was able to provison that line and YHATZEE! I have been online ever since.
The only negative side effect is that Verizon won't let residential lines get higher than 90 upload. I think that is ridiculous. I like to work at home, and VPN at 640/90 is not optimal. But I kept my static IP! I just keep my website in small pieces.
Sadly, with the Rythms bust, I paid 300+ bucks for a DSL modem that I never got. I was promised a refund, but it never materialized. I don't want to complain because I've had 100% connectivity since my lights went all green.
Now that OptimumOnline is available, I've decided to stick with LocalISP, as the static ip-address is worth the 90 upload.
In summary, LocalISP is what you want. Once you get past the Verizon manadatory ridiculousness, the stability of the connection is whats important. I've had no trouble.
For those with bad reviews and phone line problems, I say take a step back, order a new voice phone line at your location with a different name. Then order your DSL on this fresh new line. The new line will be installed rather quickly, and the DSL provisioner should not have any trouble provisioning your line.
