all in all I'm fairly happy - not nearly as fast as Cox, but I don't compete for bandwidth and don't have to deal with Cox. They are discontinuing my service as of tomorrow (VDSL Online), but are honoring my "price for life" and I will finally get the 7mb I expected three years ago

Maybe it's just me, but I think $35 for a 3 Mbit connection is fair. Nearly $40 for a 1.3 connection on a good day is unfair.
Good reliability, only time internet went out is when they cut their own line installing a telephone line. That took them 3 days to fix. That leaves a pretty sour taste in my mouth.

My household has been using Qwest DSL for approximately 2 years now. For the first 3 months or so, everything was fine and dandy. We were consistently operating at advertised speeds (1.5Mb DL .5Mb UL). We had very little downtime (a couple of minutes per week). Everything seemed to be okay. It all went downhill from there.
After those 3 months, minor problems starting occurring... occasional fluctuations in transfer speeds, slightly increased downtime, etc... These problems continued to worsen until the current situation we are in now. For about 6 hours of the day, my access speed is ~half of what we are paying for (according to tests against several locations on speedtest.net). In addition, every 1-2 hours we completely lose DSL connection for 60-90 seconds.
I've spoken to Tech Support numerous times on this issue (after getting through their inane automated system just to SPEAK with an actual rep). Every time I've called, I've had a different rep. All of them spoke very poor English, and all of them were basically reading something out of a manual or knowledgebase to me (I worked 2 years of tech support, I know what it sounds like). I finally got the most recent one to replace my modem, as we were beginning to get hardware freezes as well (this took a total of 6 calls to tech support, even though we rent our modem and they are responsible for replacing it).
Even with the new modem, we are still having speed issues and connection drops, and further calls to tech support have lent no success in getting them to actually send a line tech out to check our connections. Every time we call, they simply say "Well, our tests say everything is working fine. Please power cycle / re-cable your devices and monitor things and call us back." I follow these steps, call them back, and I get the same garbage regurgitated at me again.
If not for the fact that there are literally no other DSL providers where I am located, I would definitely no longer be a customer of Qwest.

| That's Odd When I've called in to get Technical Support for Qwest, I've not had a problem with speaking to folks who speak in clear English. Have you called during normal business hours?
Also, if you are not getting enough satisfaction out of Qwest's technical support, you can also try to reach out to the folks in the Qwest discussion forum here at BroadBandReports / DSLReports. The forum is located here: »Qwest

When we decided to switch from AOL dial-up to high speed we did have a few choices available to us. After doing some thinking and discussing we finally decided on Qwest 1.5 Mbps DSL service. We called them on a Wednesday and on Monday of the next week we had our Modem and installation kit delivered to us in the mail. Being a Network tech the installation was ridiculously easy and even someone who has very little computer experience could install with very little difficulty. The included self-install instructions are very well laid out and the pictures of each step make things easy to follow. Once the Actiontec was connected up and the UN/PW entered into the modem using the included CD (I did it through the modem interface) after it rebooted INTERNET came on nice and green and we only ever power cycled it once. We did have a few power outages and two DSL outages in the first 2 years we had the service, but we never had even a blinking DSL. Once they started rolling out ADSL 2+ speeds in our area they sent us a 2WIRE. I do wish we could've kept the Actiontec, but after having the 2WIRE 2701 HG-D for about a year and a half now I can honestly say it has grown on me.
Bottom line if you re in the Great Falls, Montana area and are looking to not spend a lot on Internet, take a look at Qwest. I know Bresnan offers faster speeds, but they are over-subbed as of now and have some network issues that they are currently working on fixing.

Summary: Looked into Comcast and Qwest. Qwest was faster for the same price so I got into them.
Speed/Package: I initially went with a 12Mb/896Kb ($55 per month) connection that came with a free Netopia wireless router. I have since upgraded to the 20Mb/896Kb ($70 per month) service.
Order/Install: Smooth install process, service was brought up the same day the installer came out. After a day the speeds dropped significantly on the router (with the Netopia you can actually see your line speed to the CO). Turns out it was a house wiring problem. The technician that was dispatched re-terminated my phone jack and all was well.
Equipment: Netopia Wireless Router (this space reserved for model # when I get to looking at it)
Overall experience: Not bad at all. I just wish their were more options for high speed broadband in my area. CO seems to be in a bit of a funk when it comes to good high speed access. Where's the stimulus bill for my fiber?

I switched from Comcast to Qwest DSL when I moved, best choice I made, it has been so much faster then Comcast. The speed is always fast, where with Comcast it was slow in the evenings and faster early mornings, however the time I would be online would be in the evenings, I choose the self install, my self install kit arrived within a week and it was delivered on the date my DSL line was activated. I received the Motorola 3347 DSL Modem/ Wireless router. I have had zero problems with the service.

There are two services in this area, Comcast and Qwest. Comcast is fast, however unreliable, with occasional latency issues. Qwest is a much cheaper and slower service. They are however rock solid and very consistent. So as long as you don't need cable modem speeds, Qwest is a good alternative.

We had Comcast HSI for years with no problems. Switched to DirecTV due to cable's horrible HD lineup in our area, and would get a bundle discount if we used qwest for internet too. Big mistake!!
We chose the 7 Megabit plan, which ends up being about 5 megabits down, 500k up consistently. After 4 months I couldn't take it (comcast spoiled me) so we're dropping it and going back to the faster connection we had with comcast.
Its not bad by any means, but like i said Comcast lower latency and higher speeds spoiled me and for not much of a price difference its not worth it to me.

1 edit | Good luck! If speed is all you're worried about then I wish you the best of luck!
Just be aware that by giving Comcast your service, you are financially supporting a company that will throttle you, cap you and otherwise limit your ability to use the service that you're paying for. It's an unfortunate reality that every major cable ISP does this these days (as far as I am aware). Not to mention the possibility of your trunk being oversubscribed at some point in the future -- but I'll acknowledge that if you're not in a densely-populated area, this might not be a big concern.
As for the latency -- that is expected with Qwest as they implement Interleaving for all DSL connections "out the door" to provide the most reliable connection AND service quality possible. You can always ask them to turn it off, if your line quality will permit. There is no guarantee that they will, however, as they will not purposefully sabotage your line's ability to be stable..
Qwest gives you total freedom to do with your connection as you will -- and offers cheap static IP options for hosting a small server or two, which is amazing.

| Re: Good luck! Agreed, there are positives and negatives for both services. A great majority of people will be better suited by one service or the other, though. In my case, Comcast is a FAR better choice, especially considering there is no other alternative here. If I could get FIOS I would in a heartbeat. | |

T'any rate, I do wish you the best with your new connection. Enjoy and take care!

I was moving and decided to go from Cable to DSL. Checked my new address for DSL, and since it qualified, I ordered it, to be installed on April 1, 2004.
April 1, 2004, everything is installed and up and running. My only complaint right now is the download speed seems to vary greatly, from 600 down, to 1.2 down, and the upload seems stable from 600-800 up.
Update:
My upload and download speeds seem to vary quite a bit.. from 1.2 down to 800 up.. to 128 down, 60 up.. Calling tech support resulted in waiting on hold for 72 minutes without talking to someone ..
Update:
3 months later, 15 calls to tech support, and many emails, the problem still happens. Unstable, unreliable connection. No one can seem to figure it out..
