It's been good many months now since I've signed up with Qwest and thought I might as well give it a review on what I think about the service and product so far.

I moved into my current location just a year and 10 days ago, during that time the only providers out here were Qwest and MediaCom. I never fully trusted DSL service (mainly because I troubleshoot those issue for a living for another ISP) and never had issues with Cox but of course Cox wasn't out here, and I had Comcast before in California and didn't had issue with there Internet service so I figured all cable providers were the same and signed up with MediaCom. Boy was I wrong and they treated me bad and looked towards Qwest to see what they got to offer.

I started off by emailing Qwest and finding out if I do, in fact, am Green for getting there DSL service at my house since there online ordering site said it wasn't available. I did got a responds back within a day saying it was and can get up to 40MB/s. I was surprised how fast Qwest actually emailed me back but I was slow at calling the number the agent provided me with to call.

When I did called I got this one agent who answered all my questions that I could drill him on since I was really curious what they had and whatever questions he wasn't able to answer he looked up the answers. I was sad to hear that Qwest didn't offer just a plain modem but instead an Actiontec Q1000. I've also asked him about possibly to put it into bridge mode and he said that I should be able to. What's great about this sales agent was the fact that he picked up right away that I was a techie and didn't bother talking to me like a "novice" customer and hearing only things that will make him a sale. Because of this I asked for his email address so I could think over my options and email him when I'm ready because I would really like him getting the sale for helping me out so much.

A week later, after thinking about and putting my options on paper, I emailed the agent and told him to sign me up for the 20MB down and 5MB up and he called me to made sure that the address I sent him was corrected and finalize the order and he emailed me my account information soon after.

On the day of install the tech showed up within the time I was given and answered all my questions about the tech aspect of it, including the loop length between me and the VRAD since I've learned that I'm on a FTTN VDSL connection. I even saw the numbers on his JDSU. The install tech did a very great job overall getting the jack installed in the room I wanted it in and getting it on and going.

I've even chatted with a few click to chat agents for basic questions and getting my PPPoE information so I can get my personal router configured and they were really helpful in getting me the information I requested for.

Only once I had to call to there support center because I lost sync, a dispatch was created, but sometime in the middle of the night I woke up and noticed my service was working again. Calling tech support thinking they must be closed, I was surprised that someone was actually there and was able to cancel the dispatch for me.

So overall, Qwest really did exceed what I originally thought about them and do recommend the service to anyone who doesn't mind signing up for a contract term.

Stand Alone Modem

I just wanted to let you know that I got the 40/20 service with Qwest about 3 months ago, and I told them I wanted a stand alone modem, and they sold me a Q100, which is a Zyxel VDSL2 Modem (I assume you have VDSL2). I have it connected to a D-Link DGL-4500 Router, and it works fine. I didn't want a Gateway. So, I believe that modem is still available. I went directly through Qwest to get it, not an outside agent.

Re: Stand Alone Modem

Well I was told that I could a month try on the 40 Megs System, But 4-7 meg would be ok with me. Only to find out 3 weeks later to get install and that all I can get is 1.5 meg @30 bucks a month.
I Don't think so. going to drop this

service and get it free in N.M.
Another thing I don't like about there service, you call in and the person you get is NEVER LOCAL. Its someone MT, Ar. Or Bum F*&^ EGt.

No longer use,

10/22/09 - Relative no longer lives at address that had Qwest DSL. And now has Comcast. But Fios is being installed in their Apartment Complex. Since I am unable to delete, will part with this update.

The DSL worked fine at this location, the problem was with the Wetware clicking on every pop up and surfing at questionable sites that then crapped out the computer. That relative is not in the new location.
end
============================================================

At home I am with Comcast and normally connect on this Laptop Wirelessly. Currently I am visiting a relative and brought a wireless access point and am accessing Qwest DSL via that means.

No problem so far, though I do see that I would be disappointed if I were to be downloading large files.

Streaming video from You Tube and downloading a 25 meg file seems to work great in Firefox. No choppiness in the video. Opened up cbs.com and am watching Jericho at same time in IE. Seems ok.

Laptop - Dell C610 - P3 @ 1.2mhz, 1 gig Ram, Netgear 54g equipment. Old but still workable.

BTW - I was working for USwest/Qwest in Tech Support in late 90's/early '00's when DSL was first deployed in Phoenix and then throughout there whole territory. Supporting Win3.11, 95/98, NT and Macs [yes Macs will run on Qwest and DSL] at the time.

It was actually easier to troubleshoot a Mac then a PC!! But most techs were afraid of Macs.

My only options in my area are DSL, satellite, and WiMax. DSL is a recent option -- we're technically outside the service range (about 18000 feet from POP) -- but thank goodness Qwest never checked.

I've had satellite -- it's slow, expensive, and has bandwidth caps. FAIL.

I've had Clearwire -- when it worked, it worked quite well. The problem is it only worked well about 1/3 of the time. The other 2/3 it either struggled with connecting and with data rates, or it simply didn't work. FAIL.

I've not got Qwest DSL. All I can say is that it works reliably and so far the speed is as advertised. Whew.

Latency?

Do you think that 100ms is reasonable latency? I would check with Qwest on that issue, for IMO, it is too high. I average about 33ms latency, and would call that reasonable.

My Other Reviews

·OregonFAST.net
I have Charter cable available for about the same price as Qwest DSL, and Charter cable is several times faster.

I have a local wireless provider that offers speed of almost 10 times what I get from Qwest, but there is an upfront installation and hardware fee. Monthly costs would be the same. I am constantly thinking of changing to them but I do not believe their reliability is quite as good as Qwest DSL service here.

My Qwest speed rarely approaches the 1.5MB spec, but is generally close ... around 1.2MB. upload speed of ~.700MB also OK.

Have had Qwest service at this location for almost 3 years. Order process was made with telephone service too and was fairly quick and painless.

Still using my old Actiontec wireless modem Qwest provided me several years ago at a previous location. It is in bridge mode feeding a Linksys router. This serves my home networking needs well. Never have any issues with the hardware.

Overall, I'm okay with what I have (connection is 20Mbps/5Mbps down/up). Although, I'm not okay with the cost, overseas tech support on weekends. A major issue with Qwest is you can and will get a different answer for the same question each time you call. This is especially prevalent in the ordering process.

As mentioned the ordering process could be a pain. You get offered one deal and call back to verify and get told that what you were given wasn't correct or it isn't what the order states.

Installation is pretty straight forward. Although now, they push having professional install done at additional cost when the VAST MAJORITY of the time, self installs (free) will work just fine.

DSL equipment is pretty good. I haven't had it quit or fail. My VDSL modem is a ZyXel Q100 modem (basic modem, no wireless capabilities).

The service itself is great. I don't lose connection at all (it should be mentioned I'm only about 1144ft away from the terminal). The speeds are solid.

The cost before tax is 84.99 a month. I'm getting discounts for the first twelve months.

In short, service itself is great (interleaving for those that need stability with the connection and you could get interleaving turned off--fastpath--for gamers. The only real downside is cost. There is no reason for DSL to cost this much.

I agree

I'm on the 40/20 plan. It was too tempting when I moved to NM, and it was available where I moved, not to get it. Mine is also $85 per month, with only a 6 month promo discount. I'm seeing about 33/13. I think that is way too expensive for an Internet connection, even though it is pretty fast speeds.

However, I chose to get it, so I have to live with the cost.

·CableOne
Qwest DSL tops out at 1.5 Mbps / 768 kbps in many neighborhoods in the Prescott AZ area. And, all traffic is backhauled down to the Phoenix area, so latencies are 60 - 70 mS. They have not put one more dime into the Prescott area for the last 5 years. CableOne, with 3 Mbps / 300 kbps is no competition if you need upload speed.

They advertise speeds of (3) to (7) Mbps. Right now these speeds can not be reached in this area. It appears they are having problems delivering on there promises for this area. I would not have switched from Cox Cable High Speed if I had known this. I would wait a year or two if I lived in this area and was thinking of switching over to them. They have no idea when and if they will ever deliver the 7 Mbps to this area. Avoid them like the plaque for now.

-- updated --

All problems have been resolved thanks to some great help from members of DSL Reports. Speeds are running much higher now. Downloads and Uploads. The install was done with a self install. I did purchase my own Modem for the connection. The modem is a Actiontec GT701. Speed package is 7000/825. Am getting 4080/780. The 7000 is listed as up to 7000/825. Service has had no interruptions from day 1. Very reliable and very cost effective. I would like to recommend Qwest for anyone out there thinking of making the switch from Cable at this time.

-- updated --

I have been with Qwest DSL for (2) years now. Never had any down time or connection problems. I am in the Green Valley, Az area. Served by Qwest out of Tucson, Az. I would highly recommend Qwest to anyone in this area.

Updated:

I will say they at Qwest do have excellent support staff on board. Had a small problem and they helped me fix it right away. Speeds at present time are advertised at 7000/865.

I get on a good day 6050/768. Not to bad considering. I have been inquiring about the 12Mbps. But it is not available in my area. I do recommend Qwest for anyone wanting to hace a reliable service to go with.

I am updating my review to include Qwest's future plans for my area that I live in. It would appear that there are no plans what so ever to upgrade the speeds in my area. What we have is what we get. I called and asked about updating to a faster speed, and was informed that there are no plans to increase speeds in my area. I have 7 and was wanting to go to 12 or above. No such luck. I will be going back to COX high speed in the near furture.

When it is up, its great. But it has been reliably DOWN every morning this week. Of course, tech support shows no problems And a few of their reps have been so busy reading their script that i couldn't even talk to them.
