The process of getting DSL service was well worth the time and trouble. BTI
was able to quickly identify that they would be able to provide IDSL service
to my house and the process was painless. No delays were encountered other
than the scheduling delays caused by myself in being available to meet the
BTI technicians at the house. The BTI technicians were on-site on-time and
even a few minutes early in every time. We did have to make more than one
visit. The first time the service would not turn up, they could not
establish continuity back to the home office. A trouble report was
generated to BellSouth. BellSouth, after a few days, reported no trouble
found. We rescheduled with BTI, and guess what, it worked the first time.
So much for no trouble found. The BTI tech and the home office support to
get my PC properly configured was terrific, I was up and running quickly.
Worked so well, that I took the next step and added an additional ISDN line
and using a BTI provided router I am now operating a very close to 288Kbps
consistently. I don't know how I survived using dial-up modem speeds
previously, not to mention the hassle of dialing. DSL is great and BTI made
it work with little effort on my part.

I have had BTI IDSL for two months now. The installation went smoothly and the service is very fast. I have a Flowpoint router which is excellent. The best part about BTI, is that they are a CLEC and long distance company, so I also save money on local and long distance services.

I give BTI an A++++++ I highly recommend BTI.

I use BTI's IDSL / 144K and I couldn't be more pleased. The order form was a breeze and my install was quick and utterly painless.

The techs showed up on time and I am now surfing to my heart's content. They provided me with a Copper Rocket and a static IP address. All I had to do was get a network interface card installed. Simple.

BTI's IDSL is very fast, SO much faster than dial-up. I wish I'd jumped on the DSL bandwagon sooner and I'm definitely glad I chose BTI.

PS The BTI techs took off their shoes before they came in the house so as not to track anything onto our carpets. Nice touch.

We are not in a location that can yet receive ADSL or SDSL service. We recently installed an IDSL through BTI Telecom and have been pleased with the service. Their technical support has been very helpful in answering our questions, getting set up correctly, providing information and guidance on fire wall software, etc.

First off I want to say that I understand what is involved in providing a
DSL circuit to both Residential as well as Business.

When I initially heard of BTI providing DSL in my area, I became excited
since Bell South still has no clue what their footprint is in the
Raleigh/Durham area. I logged into the BTI website and found the local
number for BTI and called to place an order. The sales rep informed me that
it is a 45 day turn around from time of ordering. So I was looking at an
installation date of October 11th, 1999. I did all the necessary
information transfer which sounded like he was entering the info into a
computer. I sat back and waited for my circuit to be installed. At the
time, there was no other DSL provider in the area other than BTI. I am a
serious customer and new exactly what I wanted.

20 days go by..... No word from a Technician. Left a voice mail which
    wasn't returned.

30 days go by... Still no word from a technician. Placed another voice
mail message without a return call.

45 Days go by... No contact. I call and get another voice mail message at
which time, I lost my temper and made my point VERY CLEAR that I was not
happy and was looking for some information regarding paperwork and
confirmation of order. Sales person calls back and leaves me a voice mail.
I return their call and did not talk to a real person. I transferred to the
Salesreps supervisor and told him the situation and that I didn't receive
    any follow up calls.

48 Days past order - Sales rep speaks to me in person and tells me that I
DON'T HAVE AN ORDER PLACED WITH BTI. I loose my mind. He informs me that
he will "Put me at the top of the list". But it will take at least 20 more
    days. Because of "Bell South"

I sit and watch my 56Kb modem connect at 48Kb and patently wait.

55 Days past initial order, Bell South Demarks my address and signs off on
    loopback.

70 Days past order, I am waiting on BTI to run additional wiring into my
house. I call BTI and they say that Bell South was supposed to do the
internal. Bell South told me they don't do Internal. I end up running my
own CAT5 and punch it down into the interface.

80 Days past order, still no show from BTI.

90 Days past order - BTI rep calls and says "I'm on the way.. you need to be
home." I wait. No call and no show from BTI tech. A full day of lost
    work.

102 Days past order - Rep calls and says he is on his way to my house. I
rush home and meet him in the driveway. I go upstairs and punch down the
circuit into the DSL pair. He hooks up the modem and Plugs into my NIC. I
enter the IP Addresses and it works perfectly first time. He leaves without
giving me any email information or anything additional. I copy the IP
    addresses out of my configuration.

I found the whole experience painful. The service once connected has been
running fine with only a small outage. At one point, they did delete my
email account and did not inform me. It took a couple of days to get it
reset so I could receive my mail. If it wasn't for the 1 year contract for
the "free" modem, I would be on with BlueStar.

Update on the 1st BTI Review...

First, let me say this is an update on the first BTI review I posted...

Also let me say, I was installation number 24. So, BTI has NO experince with what they are doing at this point...

With all the problems involved, my IDSL line was installed 1 week late to the day... Bellsouth came out and checked the line 3 days after BTI was to install the modem and 1 week after Bellsouth installed the line... Bellsouth said they had been trying to get to my equipment from their end for over an hour when they showed up at my house... I had to explain to them that there was no equipment on my end to get to since BTI picked up the modem after their second visit to resolve issues.

My line was converted to ISDN service in order to check the sync of the signal, which I was told was good. Bellsouth piddled around at the NID and finally told me that it would be 2-3 more days before they could do it (monday). Monday, BS came back out to my house and left a note on the door stating that the IDSL line was now functional.

BTI had stated prior to the fix that they would be back out the day after bellsouth fixed the line, whenever it was...

A call to BTI did not get anyone out, they said it would be 2 days.

The BTI guy came out with is laptop and a modem and got a sync and surfed the web... all while my WIFE watched and then called me and said it was working...

After work, I returned home to find 1 IDSL modem atop my computer and a CAT5 cable dangling in the back...

    THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO DOCUMENTATION!

I plugged the cable into my ethernet card. Of course my configured static IP address (my own) didn't worked and I had to change it as expected.

Well, I had no clue what to change it to, so I opted for DHCP (my IP is SUPPOSED to be static), which I didn't expect to work, but what the hey...

DHCP communicated to 'SOME' server on their network across the DSL line and got 'SOME' IP number... It did not get a correct SUBNET or a DNS server...

This of course, prompted me to call tech support.

I dialed, beeped through a coupla' menus and got what the guy on the other end said was "DSL Tech Support? That's what you called."

Then he proceeded to tell me that I was the first DSL call he had ever received.

When I asked him about the network settings he seemed to draw a blank. I asked him, how much do you know about DNS and IP and so forth and he said, "Nothing at all." Gee!!! Imagine that.

I told him that I knew alot about computers, it is my 'job' to know and though I do know exactly what I need, I don't know what the 'numbers' are and he needed to provide them to me...

After a combined total of 15 mins on hold and speaking to 2 other people (not even in DSL support), I received the correct info.

    The gave me:

    my STATIC IP #
    my gateway
    my subnet
    my DNS servers
    my News host name
    my email host name
    my email password
    and various other info.

THIS WAS NOT PROVIDED BEFORE THAT CALL!

I asked why wasn't a paper left with this information on it and he said, "We still have our attorney looking at them and hope to have them out soon."

Does this mean EVERYONE has to call to get the info or what???? I had 2 ask for it to get it and the techie was NO help and would not have had a clue if I did not know what to ask for. I assume that if a user didn't know he needed network settings they would have dispatched a person to the site to 'fix' connectivity problems....

    Anway:

    Final thoughts:

News Server: BAD, 30000 groups (half on nothing)

Email server: GOOD, acts like it should
    Connectivity: EXCELLENT, no outages yet

Speed: EXCELLENT, (144/144 KBps), I get 16.1 K per second with no modifications to performance

Knowledge: BAD, they don't have a clue. Be VERY educated on ethernet,IP, and DSL before calling!

Promptness of onsite service: GOOD, they were there ontime everytime except once. (out of 4 visits)

Other Comments: The agreement is very 'unusual' as it says that you may not transfer material of profane (or a few other descriptive words) content. It's very specific and basically interprets that I cannot send out an email with profane jokes in them without violating my service agreement.... BAD!

Overall, I give them a 3 on a scale of 1 to 5. It would be a 1, but I understand that they've only done this 24 times in 3 or 4 months.... They service may get much better after they get more experience...

Today, BTI showed up at my house to install my DSL modem... My presales appeared to go VERY well... BAD NEWS. The coordination of install was excellent. Bellsouth showed up to install the line a week ago as scheduled, BTI techs showed up today precisely on time. I was informed by my sales rep that NO inside wiring would be needed that the DSL connection would come from my new line's inside pairs connecting to my voice lines outside pairs and be reversed via a 'splitter' inside the house... I was informed that inside wiring would cost me $50/hour if I chose to have them do the work. I opted not to pay that amount and said I would do the wiring myself.. after Bellsouth showed up, I wired it properly as instructed on how it will work... TEST OK. I received VERY BAD information from my sales rep since the installer told me they have a service contract with bellsouth for these line installs and inside lines are installed automatically as part of the order at no additional charge (I paid BTI $30 for installation, nothing to BS).

The installer proceeded to also inform me that it was illegal to even OPEN the "CUSTOMER ACCESS PANEL" on the outside of my house, better known as a NID.

Anyway, they wanted to call bellsouth, reschedule another line install (2 more weeks+ of waiting) and have them install a jack at that time. I have already waited 45 days. I told them NO that I would run the jack inside my house seperately, to just leave the equipment the there... They did and left. The whole time they maintained that they can do noting but plug a wire in the wall and test for the signal... They would not even take a look at the NID and say "That LOOKS correct". Flatly refused in fact.

Well, they had called BS anyway and they called me back at home saying that the line they installed still registered as good. Upon calling BTI with BS's results, the person on the other end (thank you Kim) said that their installer didn't have a clue and someone would be out tomorrow at 10 to attempt to do it again... and they basically in not so many words said I was a moron... Little did they know, I work in computers / electronics / telecommuniations as a career and make more in a day than they do in a week.

Now, it's 4 hours later and I still have no DSL service and based on this experience, neither will I tomorrow.

    Favorite quote from the installer:
"I know what you're saying about the wiring outside sir, I've done it before, at home."

    Here's some tech stuff:

    The DSL is IDSL (144/144)
    The IP is STATIC
**Will be great when it's working!
The equipment is a Copper Mountain
    CopperRocket 201

I have no clue as to reliability or speed as it does not work yet.

This review may become more favorable in a week if all things go well.
