"Great customer service by phone, email, and special news groups. Free dialup account for a backup or for travel."
"Relies on SBC (PacBell) for the DSL service."
"I love my 1.5 Mbps download speed! It is worth the extra $39 a month for the DSL line."

Sonic.net is a great local ISP. I did not directly join Sonic.net; I was being serviced by Zap Communications in Ukiah when they were sold to Sonic.net. I had paid for a year of service with Zap, so I stayed with Sonic.net until the contract ran out to see how they were. Sonic.net proved to have great service, even when I wanted to cancel the virtual hosting for my web site and move it to my own server on my DSL line. I have been happy with my decision to stay with them.
I was very lucky on my install. PacBell was not backlogged at the time, so my service was activated in about three weeks. I did the self install; all the PacBell installer had to do was run a new line to the location of my router. Sonic.net had already sent me the TCP/IP config information for my static IP address. I had the router and two PCs already set up, so the DSL worked as soon as the line was plugged in. My speed was not capped, so I get the full 1.5 Mbps download speed.
I have only had a few outages in the last 18 months since DSL was installed. One was for just over a day, and it affected many users for several ISPs in Ukiah. Another was just a few hours, affecting ALL DSL customers in Ukiah, and another one just last week for about 8 hours that affected just Sonic.net customers. I love running my own webserver for my domain (»www.hawksoft.com). I could not have gained this experience with out the relitively low cost of DSL.

"They represent serious competition to Pac Bell Internet, so SBC-ASI doesn't do Sonic.net any favours"
"Definitely a worthwhile ISP - they treat their customers right"

* Business (non-profit organization) installation (I also posted a review for my home DSL installation, also with Sonic.net)
We ordered 384Kb down / 128Kb up and got 1.5Mb down / 128Kb up. We pay $20/mo to Sonic.net (DSL, nationwide roaming, 4 static IPs) and $37/mo to SBC-ASI. As of 8/23/01, Sonic announced that they now include 4 static IPs in their standard DSL package at no additional charge. I used to have to pay $12/mo for 4 static IPs rather than 1 - needly to say, I'm quite pleased. The order/install process went smoothly. We use an Alcatel 1000 bridge and a Netgear SOHO router. We have 4 static IP addresses and 4 'vanity' hostnames in the Sonic.net domain.
One of the most impressive aspects of Sonic.net is the fact that their CEO and sysadmins are all active in newsgroup-based tech support. They're real live human beings, and nice ones at that.

* Home/residential installation (I also posted a review for my business DSL installation, also with Sonic.net)
I ordered 384Kb down / 128Kb up and got 1.5Mb down / 128Kb up. I pay $17/mo to Sonic.net (pre-paid 1 year in advance) and $37/mo to SBC-ASI. The order/install process went smoothly except when I screwed up my own house wiring, at which point Sonic.net was very helpful in troubleshooting what turned out to be a problem caused by me. I use an Alcatel 1000 bridge and a Linksys SOHO router, both of which I had leftover from a previous DSL installation with another company. I have a static IP address.

I must say I am very happy with the guys at Sonic. Ordered DSL service on 6/21. Got Pacbell confirmation with install date (7/3/01) one day later!!! Service was already active on 7/2. I did not see any technician at my apartment since I did the selfinstall which was very easy. I ran the bandwidth test: 1124down/110up.

When I was shopping for DSL, I had the option of getting DSL + ISP services directly from Pac Bell, or paying another $5/month to have Sonic.net as my ISP (~$55/month total, vs. $50/month from Pacbell). I am VERY glad that I chose to go with Sonic. Their tech support is very good and the customer service is awesome. They do a great deal to help make up for Pac Bell's inherently unhelpful nature. I would recommend them to anyone

Simeon Nevel -
Monthly cost includes Sonic's $19.00 monthly cost plus PacBell's 39.00 cost for the ADSL line
I ordered 1.5M/128K service.
Download speeds for a 10meg uncompressable file direct from sonic to my desk top varies from 40KBytes/sec to 125KBbytes/sec.
I'm not sure why the wide variation exists.
I get a static IP address from sonic.
