Ordered a 1.5 mbps/384kp package on the 3th of September and was up and running on the 10th. Speed was 786kbps/128kbps at first due to verizon's fault (I was originally on 786kbps/128kbps with Verizon) Upgraded to 1.5 mpbs 5 days later. Speed was exellent. I am 7500 ft away from the CLEC and yet I got the maximum speed I ordered.
2002-09-20 01:22:22 EST: 1517 / 383 Your download speed : 1517316 bps, or 1517 kbps. A 185.2 KB/sec transfer rate. Your upload speed : 383828 bps, or 383 kbps.
Technical support was great, Answered emails within less than 2 hours. I have been with AceDSL, Cloud9 and Verizon. So far, I see that Firstgate and Cloud9 are the two most competitive. Firstgate technical support is slightly better because Cloud9 support only actively helpful within the first few weeks after that, it tooks them 3-7 days to answer emails. In brief, I'm very happy staying with Firstgate right now. I hope to stay with them for a long time.
Oh by the way, ping time and latency is great too. Check this out.
ICMP (ping) check Minimum ping: 13 ms Maximum ping: 15 ms Ping stability: 15 13 13 15 14 13 13 13 14 13

I originally ordered this service on January 13 and was given 4 weeks as the estimated turn up time. I called back on Feb 13 ro 14 and found out that there was some confusion as a result of my cancellation of my previous DSL account from Acedsl. I was given a new due date of Mar 13th. When that day came around my DSL was still not up. On the 20th my ADSL light went green but I was unable to connect to the internet. After further investigation it turned out that although I ordered 7.1 MB/640KB service, I was only in fact getting 608KB/96KB. I notified the tech's at Firstgate and they opened a ticket with Verizon. I was eventually given a new due date of Mar 30th. On Mar 29th, I came home to a voice mail from a tech at Firstgate saying that they were informed by Verizon that 640/90 was the best I could get. I knew better because I previously had a 1600/90 account from Acedsl. I informed them of this and will wait until the 30th before inquiring further (today is the 29th). My difficulties connecting to the internet was due to a misconfiguration on my part. The problems so far seem to come as a result of the inefficiency of Verizons DSL service. The employees at Firstgate have all been very helpful and responsive.
Speed Ordered: 7.1 MB down/640 KB up Price: $189/month Home Equipment: Zyxel Router - previously owned Static ip
Stay tuned.........

My DSL is up and running. The speed is 3972 up/ 640 down. This is a very fast line but I ordered 7100 up/640 down. The distance between the C.O. and myself is definitely a factor (4900 feet). I've had this service for almost a month and it has been very reliable so far.

I moved to NYC last summer and needed an ADSL service provider that also gave me a static ip address and I decided to go with Firstgate.net. The presales info seemed fine and the installation was fine. Everything was up and running after a few weeks. However, the service would fizzle out every once and a while and then in the middle of November the service died for over a week. Firstgate couldn't figure out what was wrong and everytime I phoned someone I got a different answer (although they all had the common theme of "we have found the problem and it will be fixed in 24 hours"). Finally, the Firstgate representative that deals directly with Verizon got involved and it somehow turned out that Verizon recieved an installation request for my line from Firstgate.net. The Firstgate.net representative siad this was a Verizon screwup, but after my experiences with Firstgate, I am very unsure about this (keep reading). Finally after my service came back to life I had to repeatedly request reimbursement for my lost days. Finally they refunded a prorated share of my monthly fee. At the same time, I requested that they change the credit card that my service is billed to. That worked for the next month. The month after I found they had charged my old card again. This happened twice. Now, faced with moving to another apartment in the same building, I phoned Firstgate.net to find out what was involved. I was specifically told that there would be a turn around time of 3 days as they needed to send someone over to my apartment (I never had anyone come over initially) and that the installation fee would be waived. I was instructed to phone back on the day that my phone line was moved (number still the same). I phoned back a day early to make sure I was covering everything I could. To my surprise (right), I was passed around to a few people and finally to the same representative (I think) and was quickly informed that it would be 3 weeks. I replied that I was distinctly told it would be three days. The woman on the phone had the audacity to berate me for not getting the name of the person that told me it would only be three days. So much for any type of customer relations. Now, given the installation fee that is non-refundable within the first year, I am stuck with these people.
In summary, unless you really need a static ip and are willing to hash it out with these people (they seem to have zero leverage with Verizon. There must be service contracts between the two, I assume they have made enough mistakes with Verizon that they have lost credibility), I would look elsewhere first. Verizon seems to have horrible reviews on this web site, but at least they own the lines (in other words, if Verizon sucks and everyone else leases lines from them, then they are second tier to dealing with Verizon).

After being a Flashcom user and being switched to that Terrible Telocity service, I wasn't gonna settle for cable, well I did for about 20 days and RETURNED IT. Now with that said, FirstGate.Net is a company who claims their the continued Flashcom. Could this be true? Maybe, but there is a fact, pings on to the internet are really really fast, times I've never seen before, bottoming out in the 11-15ms ping range, it doesn't get any better then that beating out flashcom in the 20ms range. Like Flashcom, the newsgroup server isn't that great, has a listing of 70,000 but not all are real newsgroups and the speed of it isn't great. Ordering 416/208 Service but running on a SDSL Line, I get consistant 42kbs downloads and uploads which is a big bummer knowing that I ain't maxing out the lines potential. This company does seem to be a private company since the speeds tend to fluxiate a little bit here and there but all in all very satisfied.
For those just woundering why my Day of order was so short was because I already had a running line to Northpoint.
