I have used Speakeasy for almost 3 yrs, during that time I moved from Illinois to California, even though I couldn't set up a new account for 3 months, they did not charge me a disconnection fee, and let me use the unlimited dial up for free around the country.

In illinois, I used the self install with no problems, and when Speakeasy upgraded they sent me a new modem for free, and let me keep the old one. My service only went down once, and that was because I foolishly disconnected my phone line, Speakeasy Tech was very helpful with resolving this with my phone company, as well as answering any other questions I had.

In California I ordered it 2 times so far, and it was up within a week at both places. I was able to swtch it to my roomate's name with no fees at the first house, while I moved into my second place--some companies charge a fee for this, or just for changing your number.

Speakeasy has always been very helpful with any questions I've had, support is 24 hours, and when your service is first up and running, they call you to make sure you are happy.

I know that SPeakeasy may be a little bit more expensive than others, but I run a small business out of my home, and I cannot afford to have any downtime. I"ve had other services like RCN cable modem--which was great at first, but then the hub got full and congested--and Earthlink, which was up and down all the time.

This company has always worked with me and my special needs, and that is why it is tops!!!!

Updated: 8/2/04

So, I moved across town and had to get a new phone number because I'm in a new central office. I called Speakeasy and left a message with their moving specialist. He called back and got the particulars (new phone number and address, etc.). Because I was staying with Speakeasy, the usual $300.00 early termination fee did not apply. They also did not charge me for another modem because I can move the one I have (actually, I'm using a Cayman modem right now; my Broadxent was not being used).

Speakeasy has a neat service where every day they update you on the installation. A week before the circuit due date (three days after I ordered the DSL), they had already sent me my IP and DNS information, so just for the heck of it I brought a DSL modem along to my new house. I had just finished wiring my house for phone and Ethernet, and used an outside mounted DSL filter that filters all the telephones. I plugged the Broadxent DSL modem into the unfiltered jack, plugged it in and it locked up! I put in my IP addresses and was surfing the web. The DSL was up and running a full week early.
Due to the installation of a new floor at my new house, my moving day was delayed. Originally, I had told Speakeasy to remove the DSL service at my old address on 8/2. I called them on the 31st (a Saturday morning) got voicemail and asked them to not remove it until the 9th. For whatever reason, shortly after midnight on the second my DSL stopped working. I called their tech support number and got a real person, Carlos who re-established my DSL service ON THE SPOT! Remember, this was at 1 AM on a Monday morning. I even got back my old IP address.

Carlos also stayed on the line while I tested everything. When I mentioned to him that my uploads were always well above the 256K I was paying for (usually around 320-330K) he replied: "That's because we provision all our 1500/256K lines at 1500/384K".

So there you have it.....Speakeasy routinely gives their customers more then they pay for.

How can you go wrong?

Oh, one more thing....on my new install they not only gave me the LA special price again ($29.95/month), but extended it another full year.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After two years, I changed from an excellent ISP (Surfcity.com) to Speakeasy only because they offered faster uploads then Surfcity could provide (which I need for Vonage). Surfcity uses Verizon and Speakeasy uses Covad.

My changeover went smoothly, and happened two days early. My wife called and told me that the 'net was down. I asked her if all three lights on the Fujitsu DSL modem were on. She said that the last two were out, so I knew Surfcity had been disconnected. Fortunately, the new DSL modem had arrived that very day. Speakeasy had already emailed me the static IP address, gateway and DNS info, so when I got home I hooked up the new DSL modem, put the info into my router and it just started working. I get speeds of 1275/320 on my 1500/256 circuit.
Though Surfcity had faster downloads, their uploads were just too slow (I got 1430/120 with them). Ping times are better too, likely because my circuit with Surfcity was frame relay; Covad uses ATM.

Finally, I got a promotion price for the Los Angeles area: The first year is $29.95 a month.

All in all, I find them to be a first class ISP. My only (minor) complaint is that sometimes they're a bit slow to return (non-critical) calls or emails. Maybe Surfcity spoiled me here; their response time is usuallly within an hour, while Speakeasy can take a day or two.

Since Speakeasy has > launched their Onelink program, I could finally give Comcast the Boot. In doing so I was able to double my down speed to 6mbs and triple my up speed to 768kbps. All for the same price of Comcasts Internet Pro service, but with 1000 times better Customer Service. I was aware of every step being taken by Speakeasy or their contracted service providers and they delivered on time! What a concept. I have 4 static IPs and am extremely happy with the switch.

I left Optimum Online (OOL) to come to Speakeasy in 2002. I couldn't take anymore 'file-sharing' and 'server-running' threats from OOL. Not at Speakeasy! No port blocks and no bandwidth restrictions! I now host HTTP(s)/FTP/SSH/DNS/SMTP/POP3(s)/IMAP(s) all from a linux server set up on my 2nd free static IP. My first goes into a wireless router and gets shared between 6 computers, one of which is another HTTP server! My best experience with Speakeasy was when they lowered the cost of the plan I was on, and even though I was under contract at $100/month, they moved me down to $90/month for the same service. I feel loved at Speakeasy and reccommend it to all of my friends, clients, and coworkers.

Had Speakeasy ADSL, then SDSL at my current residence, tried Comcast for a few months then tried to come back to Speakeasy however my house moved 10,000 feet according to Verizon. Tried getting multiple telephone lines installed without any luck. OneLink was offered, pre-qualed, installed quickly, extremely stable speeds (1.5/256 is giving 1.2/350).

Long story semi short....ok maybe not

I was contacted by a sales rep at speak easy after I declined an offer due to them not being able to supply the same speeds as my current connection. He stated that that was an error with their online system and that sure I could have that speed. He failed to mention something here that I'll go into shortly. After having a giant smile on my face knowing that I could have 6Mb/768 on the line, I also ordered another of the same speed on my secondary line. I run a small business so need the upload speed and I'll challenge anyone to find 1.5Mbs of upload speed (yes I couple them) for the promotional rate of $40 a month.

Two days later I get a call back from the rep saying that he's trying to make things go as fast as possible and there has been an error. It was a simple line verification error that I've dealt with before so I told him the solution....smooth sailing.

About this time I get curious into seeing what is actually going on and I check the online status of my order. OMG if there was ever a cluster .... going on. The speeds in the order, the hotswap from verizon on one line, the number for the covad switch, etc.... just about everything was wrong. Its soooo jacked up that I know that I need an electronic paper trail. So I do two things. I create a ticket in their online system and then I called them and read the ticket. I was assured they'd fix it and all would go well.

Two days later I log in again to see the order status, and the same verifiication error that I warned them about happened again, but no problem taken care of with a ticket and a call.

One day later, order goes through however I notice something in an invoice they send me. Why am I being charged 99.95 for a modem and 99.95 for a professional install. I look at the order and they somehow have changed things such that I have an order in place for a 1.5Mbs/384 line instead of the fatty on their OneLink service and want to charge me 79.99 a month for it. This is not to mention that I only see one order for one line.

Again I do both..create a ticket and call them up. Customer service connects me to my old sales rep. Despite the 10+ emails I've exchanged with him and the few phone calls, of course he doesnt know me and doesnt know anything about the problems I've been having. The order is canceled again and redone. This time I asked for only one line to have anything on it, at the promotional rate. I'm informed that there now is no promotional rate on the OneLink lines.... He obviously doesnt get it.... So I spell out exactly what I want and what we agreed to.

All in all, I now have an order in place for a 6.0/768 line on a line formerly leased from covad. $10 says they mess up the verification again, another $10 says they'll send me another modem despite me saying they dont need to, $10 says they will forget the static IPs and $5 says that they'll redo the order again and I'll get pissed and put a chainsaw through their local trunk because of another 2 week delay which is costing me time and money. Ok maybe not the last part but long story short...my point is this:

You cant beat the price, but watch out for them sneaking crap behind your back that you didnt ask for. Also, if you have an order any more complex than what your grandma can order from Ma bell, don't expect an easy ride.

---------------------------

Update to the review. While the full details are finally getting worked out a few more things have occured and like normal, its rarely just one party's fault. I incorrectly stated one of the order numbers, thus helping to fuel this little fire. I just wanted to thank the guys at speakeasy for helping me get this corrected asap.

-----------------------------

Another update and much has been said, little done. I was billed again for all the canceled lines, which was refunded eventually. A tech came out today to add another drop to my place, but that is not what is needed and will probably delay the finalization of my install another 2 weeks. This is a nightmare and the best part is, its not HARD to understand what I want....in fact its down right easy.

Background: Having been a Megapath SDSL customer since the demise of NorthPoint, I recently decided to switch to ADSL, as I could no longer justify the expense of SDSL/MP. Speakeasy seemed the logical choice because of their packages for technically savvy users and the excellent price/value of their services.

Order: Placed the order via the automated system on the Speakeasy website just before midnight, 1 July. Following the order, I received a series of confirmation e-mails and was granted immediate access to the members area of the SE website. One IP address (of 4 ordered) was provisioned immediately; configuration details were posted on the website, as was a detailed work log of events pertaining to the provisioning/installation of the order.

To digress for a moment about the SE website: The members area allows you to manage your existing services as well as order additional services. This process seems to be automated on the backend, such that the changes/additions take effect immediately, thereby obviating the usual, obligatory phone call to customer support (and concomitant hold time) required with most ISPs.

Installation: Incredibly fast -- Under 48 hours from order to live! Curious as to whether my POTS loop -- which never previously had line share ADSL on it -- had been provisioned for service, I configured an existing Cisco 677 ADSL bridge/router for bridging and set its PVC. Upon attaching it to the line on the evening of 2 Jul, it immediately trained! Amazed, I attached a PC and configured it with the IP address assigned by SE to confirm whether the circuit was yet provisioned on the ISP side and could pass IP. Indeed it was and it did! (The 677 reports a data rate of 6016kbps/768kbps (as ordered) and line capacity of 8768kbps/1056kbps (down/up).

Note that this quick turn around was predicated on my having a compatible DMT ADSL CPE on hand. Shipment of the SE-provided CPE (a Broadxent 8012-V) took 7 days, arriving on schedule as promised. Thus, shipment time of the CPE would appear to be the gating factor, or weak link in the chain, as it were, to a speedy bring up.

Support: Opened a ticket (via the members area of the SE website) to setup reverse DNS records for my IP addresses. This request was implemented reasonably quickly, in 5 hours from ticket open, plus another couple of hours for their periodic, daily nameserver update to pick up the change. Note that SE allows you to specify reverse DNS names for your addrs, but they don't support RFC 2317 delegation.

Value: I'm paying $109.95/mo (plus FUSF and tax) for 6Mb/768kb ADSL. Included in the package are 4 bridged, static, non-PPPoE IP addresses, with no port blocking. (SE calls this the 'SysAdmin' package.) The first three months are discounted to $19.95 on the 12 month contract. Installation was no charge and CPE/installation kit is fully rebated.

Be cautious with this carrier when closing your account and make sure that you receive a statement that your account is closed in writing, not email. I switch from megapath SDSL to speakeasy when I relocated from California to Texas. I used this carrier for 7 months and then moved from my temporary housing to a location to where I was unable get SDSL. I then contacted Speakeasy, notified them of my move and had my service disconnected. A month later I received another email for a service charge, contacted them and explained that was service was disconnected the previous month. After talking to the representative they stated that this payment will be applied to my balance and my account will be settled. I never received email or letter that my account was settled and a year later I check my credit report and there is an outstanding balance from Speakeasy which I was never aware of. I contacted the Collection Agency and they stated that speakeasy made several attempts to contact me which I never received. I have paid the account in full, but now I will have a collection account on my credit report for 7 years. I know that I should have done my due diligence with them when it came to this account so I understand that in part this is my fault. I just didn’t think that I would have to follow up this much with them, and I want to warn others so they don’t end up in the same boat.

I have a 1.5 SDSL line from Speakeasy, and it's been rock-solid ever since it was installed back in December. The installation process was incredibly smooth, and I was always kept up-to-date. The price is a little steep at $325/month (including tax), but it's liveable for the quality of the line. The line has NEVER gone down, except one time when the server run off of it got DDoSed. Even when the line was fully saturated from getting hammered, Speakeasy's support was excellent in trying to help me track down the problem and filter it off.

Couldn't ask for more. I'm downgrading to 1.5/256 onelink, and they're even waiving the early termination fee on my SDSL line.

I've used Cable (Optimum Online) in the recent several years but decided to do a switch back to DSL due to the recent 12 - 14 months of unreliable service and the frequent service outages that would leave me with no service for several hours almost daily. Not to mention, the latency and speed cap issues. After spending many hours on the phone with tech support and the frequent field technician visits to resolve the service issues (never solved), I decided that it was time to bid my farewell to OOL Cable Broadband.

For me the switch to Speakeasy was a piece of cake as I am about 5500' from the CO and in the past have had Verizon as well as Northpoint DSL. From order date to going live was a total of 7 days. I received the Broadxent 8012-V bridge when I ordered the Speakeasy ADSL 1500/256 with 2 static IP service. As measured, this is a consistent 1270/320 service. True that this is roughly about one third the speed I'd normally would get from Cable Broadband, but only when it worked.

And I may be paying a little bit more for Broadband DSL than I normally would pay for Cable Broadband, but the trade off is well worth it.
