I just got it installed today. Initially I had some trouble locating
the verizon telephone line in my apartment. After I conneceted the wireless
router/Modem to the telephone line the thing did not work initially, the I
called the customer care number & the lady tech helpped me all the way to
install & configure my modem & wireless connection. She was very well
knowledgable on the entire process.
Once the service is configured, I connected two of my personal laptops & 1
office laptop to the new Verizon Network. all the computers are working with
reasonablely good internet connection speed for general usage.

I need to connect to my office newtrok using VPN, that is also working well
as of now.

I use Vonage to make longdistance & internationla calls & that is also
working well as of now (I just tested it briefly to see if I can make calls
& I found that I can).

The only thing left to be tested is my NetFlix, but due to the location of
the current telephone jack, I can't connect my TV to the new modem, I'll
work this out & then test the netflix also.

for $25/m + tax I think this is very good service that I'm getting,
especially when compared to Comcast's huge $160/pm bill just for a cable &
Internet connection. I'll test this for coming few days & if I do not
encounter any instability or other problems I'll say Good Bye to Comcast.

I think people should try this out at $25/m for 1 mbps internet line.

mike s(08:38:44): no thanks - i'll figure it out. your outgoing
mailserver doesn't like something in one of the emails. thanks for not
helping

Akshay(08:39:09): The reason for previous emails is that it is taking
the previous email account settings. Now I have corrected and it is
working now.

Value for money:

Having been with DSLExtreme (Verizon) for six years, we just swtiched to Verizon DSL, thus taking both the lines and ISP services from Verizon. Reason: For the same 3000/768, DSLExtreme is now $10/mo. more. Guess FCC rules allowing Teleco's to charge more to CLEC's starting to bite. Verizon sends a CD that they want you to use to do the self install. Didn't relish that prospect, but didn't have to use it! So we are clean of any crapware, Yahoo, MSN, etc. If you don't want it, call tech support and ask for your default starter user ID and PW, login to Verizon.net, change to your own selections, then hit reset on the modem. Viola! Also, Usenet access, mail, etc. easy to configure and worked fine.

UPDATE: Now years later. Just used Linkline LA to test speed--2800/590 when paying for "up to" 3000/768. Distance from CO won't allow higher rates--no use buying higher tier. Wonder what TimeWarner cable service is like in this niehgborhood, but no reviews or speed postings from neighbors that I can find. Their "up to" speed claims are: Standard 10Mbps for $30/mo, Turbo PB 15Mbps for $40/mo, and TurboPlus 20Mbps for $50/mo. We are still paying $32/mo. for Verizon DSL mid tier ("up to" 3000/768). Rare outages or modem resetting. We are month-to-month now. The wireless (g) modem that they originally provided died years ago (wireless part) and we put in a D-Link DSL-2640B (only a/b/g) which works fine. So our contract term referenced was for the packaged modem. No idea their current offerings. Once again my big question is quality of service of the one competitor here: TimeWarner cable. Hate their TV service. Too bad Verizon doesn't seem interested in rolling out FIOS in this neighborhood.

Overall, Verizon does a decent job. However, they're (according to two
local techs) no longer rolling out FiOS; I suspect they've stopped in
order to concentrate on 4G. In terms of reliability, it's top notch. I've
never had an outage in over 2.5 years, and the speed is consistent.

Their support is awful, though. When I moved to my current location
I was told (by their online registration system) that my address could
get up to 3mbps, with FiOS "within a year." Turns out the cabling to
my location was ancient and had huge loops of extraneous line in
the way, so they had to tune everything heavily in order to achieve a
whopping 1.5mb down, 384k (yes, really) up.

Recently I found, also via the website (which is often slow or broken)
that my address is now eligible for up to 10mbps. I'm now awaiting a
technician who will make a software change to enable this...presuming
the site (and their Support/Sales people) aren't wrong about it. And of
course, they never bothered to notify me that additional bandwidth is
available...I had to go find it on my own.

My only alternative is Comcast, and I may have to go there unless the
Verizon reps can actually provide a speed increase.

Hello,

My name is Bill F and I live just North of the City of Palmetto in Manatee County Florida. I got sick and tired of my 2 56k modems averaging 26-31k, so I checked out this dslreports website and did my research on DSL. I was and am currently not able to receive Cable modem high speed Internet access from Time Warner's Road Runner. So I chose ADSL from GTE. I opted for the Bronze+ package at $32.50 for 1 year. GTE's promotion at the time (end of May 2000) also waived the cost of the DSL Modem, a Fujitsu Speedport Modem. GTE also waived the $80 set-up/activation charge. The order/install process with GTE went exactly as what was relayed to me on the phone. The one major problem that almost occurred, was with GTE's Modem shipping department. I am glad that I followed up on checking to see the when and how things were going to be set-up and arrive, because if i did not, the DSL Modem would have arrived several days after my service was turned on. I would have been one mad MF'er if that would have happened. So luckily the Modem arrived on time and it has been a happy marriage so far with GTE. Tech support..well initially I might have confused them because I hooked all 3 of my computers up to my Linksys DSL Router, and I was having some difficulty getting my IP from GTE. As you might know the Router can allow me to have up to 253 computers on the one purchased IP. Well I only have 3, and the DSL Router's IP address showing up kind of baffled them. I have not had to call tech support since the second day it was turned on. It has worked great so far, and am very satisfied with the speed. The Bronze+ DSL package from GTE is 768/128, and I average around 705-715 down and 120-122 up. Also the GTE field crews had to come out to my house and upgrade a few things, and they were on time, and helpful to my questions.

Well here it is 9/29/02 and I have stayed with them. The few biggest problems occur only when a big tropical storm or hurricane come close by here. But they do get he system back up in a fair amount of time. I have had a couple of minor speed issues with them, and they practically put me on a DSLAM by myself. I can't hammer Verizon (used to be GTE) about their quality of service, because they have exceeded my expectations.

UPDATE! 5/17/03 I switched from Verizon ADSL (Bronze-768/128) to Earthlink Cable.

Well, I did enjoy my service with GTE, then it changed to Verizon for almost 3 years. I really did not have any major problems, except when a hurricane would come around, and then I would be down for a few days. I did complain on the speed a few times, and they basically put me on a DSLAM with like 1 other person, since that I did not have any speed or any other problems.

So I switched to Cable from Earthlink, because of the offerings and the speed and the price per month. I only needed 6,500 Northwest airlines word perk miles and they (earthlink) offered me 7,000 wold perk miles to try their service , so that now gives me over 25,000 miles and a free trip anywhere in the states, but the price also was an incentive. The first 6 months are $29.50, then $41+ per month, with no contract, no early withdrawal penalties, and a much faster connection to the internet. Also no charge for the install, or equpment either. Once I used the tools here at DSLR, ( DrTCP) and changed my RWIN setting from 15000 to 42000, my speeds have been excellent. I am averaging now 2010/364, instead of the ADSL from Veizon of 690/120. Now that is a huge difference in speed, and it is sweet. Also Earthlink allows you 8 email names and has some nice other software too, like the block-up popper, and the anti-spam tools. The cable modem supplied to me is a Toshiba pcx2500 cable modem. If I have any issues or problems with Earthlink, well then I will be dead on their ass like a pitbull.

Also, to those verizon customers that might like to know of something that I did, here is some great info....Well, about 4 months ago I told Verizon on the phone that I was going to cancel. Guess what they did? They said that since I was a loyal, long time customer, they would send me 2 $50 checks in the mail to keep me as a customer. They did, I cashed them, and now I am letting others know of this, maybe they will do this for you, who knows, I sure as hell did not expect it, but that $100 was nice, too bad they can't lower the prices, make the speeds comparable to cable for less than what cable is charging, and the airline miles, I was waiting for a deal like that, so verizon should follow the ways of the cable internet industry, or they will lose a lot of money and customers......just like me.

UPDATE: 4/21/04:

I have Roadrunner now and they have been real good about speed and price...so far. If they jack the prices up like earthlink, then I will switch to another.

Update: 3/8/05:

I switched back to Verizon DSL several weeks ago when I found out the price was the same, speeds were faster and there was no contract. So far...they are OK. The trick with this is to use the tweaks forum, download Drtcp and set your settings for what works best for you. My speeds down tripled after doing just that.

NEWSFLASH!!! UPDATE!!!!

Update: 11/29/05 Verizon has DSl for $14.95 w/ speeds on the money at 768 down / 128 up. Out&$(#^*standing deal. Down time is nil to zero. Customer support has some techs w/ brains. Also hurricane loss is not hit like cable here in the Tampa Bay area.

NEWSFLASH! UPDATE 5/31/10

Update: Well I inherited a house that already had Verizon FIOS PACKAGE (tv, INTERNET AND PHONE). So far I have chopped the FIOS TV off (I have DirecTV in every room) and kept the FIOS Internet and FIOS phone. I will honestly say that so far they suck and I am considering dropping them like a hot rock. If they don't fix my speeds for the Internet FIOS, but the phone works good. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being the worst, I GIVE THEM A 2. They are Verizon FIOS of Bradenton, Florida.

Update 2/25/11-

I am living at another house in another city about 5 miles from my old house. I have the Verizon FIOS Internet / phone, but not the TV included, as I have had DirecTV sattelite for several years. This house already had all of the FIOS package and as noted I just told them to ditch the TV part.

I have to admit that everything has been great so far with this Verizon FIOS. I get a download speed of around 12 to16 mb down and about 4 to 6 mb upload speed on average. I have so far had very good service and have not noticed any down time or interruptions in service. The only issue that I have had is being able to use one of my laptops wirelessly thru the service. This house is 3 times bigger than my old house so I don't know if this is the issue, but I gave up trying to connect wireless anymore.

So far so good with Verizon FIOS and I have been here over a year.

Verizon does not care to support their copper / DSL any longer. I have now had 3 different DSL circuits installed at the same location (at zip 90275), and all three are constantly going down (be it at different times). The modem is 3 feet away from their service box on the back wall of the house in a NEMA weather proof enclosure so they can't use the excuse "it's your internal wiring".

In weeks past, the Verizon DSL tech that had come out was trying to convince me into letting him swap my bad copper pair of wires with another neighbors good and active DSL circuit. If this is how Verizon techs are trained to fix stuff, or rather trained not to fix stuff, why are they selling services for which they cannot provide service for. Talk about job security!

Why don't they actually start replacing all the bad copper instead of playing musical chairs (sort of speaking) with one good copper pair constantly being rotated between a block of neighboring customers?

What a joke.

I've called in so many trouble tickets since day one of having attained these 3 DSL circuits over the past 9 months. Just a few days ago, I phoned in to initiate a trouble ticket (on December 21st 2010) for one of my 3M/768kb circuits operating at .120M/40kb. Verizon stated that the earliest they could service that circuit is January 3rd. That's 14 days with unusable service. This has been my typical experience with Verizon !!!!

I don't see how they could sell / provide DSL service, when they don't truly care to support it.

I give Verizon DSL Zero Stars for service, dependability, and rapid response time !!!

Verizon, through sending out incompetent DSL technicians and not spending a dime to repair their old copper lines believes this is good business?

I was thinking of going to Verizon FIOS at one point, but after my experiences with Verizon's services (almost a year now), I'm going with another ISP provider for my business and changing over all my company cellular phones to other carriers as well. What a joke of a company!

A customer can only take so much. Come on Verizon, clean those morning buggies from your eyes and wake up!

Order Date: 02/24/10
Days to install: 9
Speed: 3MBs/768Kbs
Price: $45/mo. plus tax

I've had a rock-solid 1.5MBs/384Kbs connection with SpeakEasy for several years. But they wanted $90/mo. to upgrade to 3Mbs/768Kbs. After a month of trying out Time-Warner Cable, I gave up. I had to manually reset TWC's hardware at least once a day while their Internet access varied between 4Mbs and just plain awful. I ordered Verizon 3Mb/768K DSL on 02/24/10.

I received email promising service on 02/28/10. I received a telephone message on 02/28 telling me that my service was ready. It wasn't. I received two more messages
congratulating me on my new Verizon DSL. And they left a phone message
telling me that my service was running on a telephone number that was
different than the number shown in their email.

I called on 02/28 and Verizon told me to wait until 03/02/10. On 03/02/10, I called and Verizon promised that a tech would arrive between noon and 4pm on 03/04/10. At 2:30pm on 03/04, I called to Verizon to confirm and was told that the tech would actually arrive at 6:05pm. He did. By 6:30, I was connected to the 'Net.

But every time I tried to register my account and set up email, the software froze at 85%. Verizon support took over my PC remotely and changed my settings. Slowly, ever so slowly, they fixed my email problem. All I needed then was to disable wireless access (so my neighbors couldn't drain any bandwidth). Finding instructions on
Verizon's web site was like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

By 10pm, I was finally done. As it happens, I was one of the 14 people that Verizon chose for their very first DSL beta test in California. I've owned a software company since 1975. I've built PCs from the motherboard up.

I pity the novice user who chooses Verizon. There's no dedicate DSL support line. Call support and you have to wind through a maze of options. Search Verizon's web site with the make and model of your router and you'll see a long list of hits on everything router on Earth.

On the good side, the tech was competent and Verizon's telephone support
personnel were always nice. Does Verizon DSL work? Yes! I'm getting
2.9Mb down and 720K up. The tech qualified my line for 7Mbs so I will
upgrade soon -- as soon as I can figure out how to upgrade my DSL line.
Verizon's DSL order department closed before my line was even installed.
And I have yet to find a link on their web site that would let me spend
another $10/month.

Obviously, none of the people who manage Verizon's DSL department have ever pretended to be a normal customer who went to their web site and ordered DSL services. They should. Because if they did, they would surely find a way to simplify things.
