Was paying my phone bill on the VZW site and figured I'd check the status of DSL as I've been doing for years without success (we still can't get Voice Mail on our line due to the age of the CO equipment here). After searching the number, DSL was supposedly available, so I placed an order on the $ 27.99 per month for life promotion (as long as you don't make any contract changes). Modem shipped within 24 hours but was delayed by Christmas Holiday at UPS.
Received email within 72 hours that my service was up and running, but it took 2 more days to get the modem. Setup was fast but did not install any of the Verizon Bloatware. I'm running it on a standalone connection for now, but if it works well will install a dual WAN router so that I have failover to Verizon if Meidacom goes down, which it does often here. @ of us have IT jobs working from home, so we need redundancy - this is a great deal. Speeds and connectivity are great so far.
Watchout Mediacom - I smell a mass exodus coming in Mahomet.

If you are like me and prefer reliability and availability over speed, Verizon DSL is the ticket.
Verizon DSL is as rock solid as dial-tone. No problem during my 12 month/$29.95 commitment. No outages, no tech support calls. While I am still shopping since my one year commitment is now over, it looks like I will continue with Verizon DSL month to month.
Road Runner "Lite" is unbearably slow. 600k/400k. It seems like dial-up even though it is "ten times faster." I previously had Road Runner High Speed bundled with cable TV. There were frequent, unexplained, undiagnosed, un-fixed outages that lasted minutes or hours several times a week. It was not for lack of trying, but BrightHouse could never fix the problem. Intermittent outages over time lead to hair pulling pounding head on wall. Exact same computer connected to Verizon DSL has provided rock solid Internet access for a year.
Verizon has earned my business.

Customer Service is like pulling teeth, Hard to get results from, Some are good(Canada and the US so far), While others outside North America are only interested in troubleshooting Your hardware even If You've been told by others at Verizon that It's a CO based problem, Some will have outdated tools that won't check the CO when a line test is done and the back end where the User data for the DSL Circuit is may lose the data(They need better backup of the user data, I guess Verizon DSL doesn't care too much about their customers) while the front end at Verizon DSL Billing will still say Your account is still activated and then they'll will say We apologize when It's something that happens way too often and should be fixed and yet Verizon DSL doesn't do squat about fixing their problems(Excuses, Excuses as Mom would say and She was right), If Charter cable was nearby to Me I'd switch to them. I did get a FREE month out of Verizon DSL for My trouble and I still need to setup My email and My website again too. I was offline for nearly 14.5 hours after being on the phone for nearly 3 hours since 8:49am on 12-04-07. Verizon the Phone Company of course I like and Trust, Their DSL branch though is a problem and I dread calling customer service.

Initially, it was a big hassle because my line was reserved by a defunct DSL provider, but once that was cleared, it was smooth sailing.
I could get DSL a little cheaper (Cyberonic) so I consider the value OK.

I ordered Verizon Online DSL on October 18th, 2004. I received the shipping confirmation/general information emails the following morning. The service activation date given was October 18th. I received the self-install kit on October 21st, and just out of curiosity, I hooked the modem up. No sync, but that was expected with the service ready date more than a week away. The next day, I left the modem plugged in while I went to work, I got home around 5:00P.M. The DSL light was steady - my modem was sync'd with the CO, although the connection didn't work yet. About an hour later, a Verizon utility van pulled up in my driveway. I went out to greet the technician, and he informed me that he had to change something in my NID. The procedure only took him about 15 minutes, and before he left, he told me that he would "call it in" later on that night. I waited anxiously, and sure enough, about two hours later, the internet connection was working, and I was able to create a verizon username with the install disk. It downloaded a wealth of test files that weren't needed or wanted, but that was okay. About 20 minutes later, I was up and running.
My first impression was that page load times were absolutely mind blowing (I have been using Direcway satellite for more than three years). Verizon and Direcway are completely uncomparable. The differences are too large, and too many. Verizon DSL beats Direcway (or any other satellite connection) by leaps and bounds. After being amazed at the speed of opening a few pages, I decided to do a speed test, to see how close I was to the 1500/394 speeds that I ordered. Complete and utter disappointment. The first speed test at wdc.speakeasy.net returned a very low download speed of 360-something, but the upload was in the 370 range, and that was great. I wasn't very worried at that point, because my TCP properties were still optimized for my old satellite connection, and I knew that was slowing me down. I completely expected that. I did a little browsing around the Verizon (and tweak forum) and decided to post my own thread. I got a few suggestions, but only one made a signifigant difference. I changed the RWIN to 11620, and my download speeds shot up to the 700s, but that was still too low. I decided make small changes to that number, to see if I could improve the speed. I went through a 20-25 minute cycle of changing the RWIN (incrementing the number by 1,000 every time) of changing the RWIN, rebooting my PC, and running a speedtest. The number steadily improved with each iteration. On the same speedtest, with an RWIN of 21620, my download speed was now in the high 1300s. When I tried 22620, the download speed dropped down to 500, so I knew that the best possible RWIN for my connection was 21620. I was very happy now.
The bottom line of this review is that so far, I am very satisfied with DSL, my new toy. The internet is alive again, and I'm loving it. If you're anywhere near my kneck of the woods, and are hesitant about giving Verizon DSL a shot, stop worrying. Just order it, you will never, and I repeat, NEVER regret doing it. I know this review was a bit premature, but I'll be sure to update it in the future, when I have more to add. I'm hoping that the review will remain this positive as my experience continues. Thanks for reading.

I don't miss Direcway yet.
UPDATE: 11/17/2007 I am still just as happy with Verizon's 3.0/768 service as I was the day I got it. Terrific ISP, I can't say much about their Indian tech support, but you will probably never need it anyway. They are a very reliable ISP.

Ordered bronze package 768/128, had it for a long time, but then it degraded to never above about 600/128. haven't seen fit to complain because my introductory price has been in effect past the introductory time ($40 total for line+isp). Install was timely and almost painless. one call i made was connected to a guy who knew exactly what to say. i've never installed their software, and never will. My line is a DHCP, ethernet, and i use a nat share switch to connect 2-3 computers. i run some limited servers so that i can reach my computer while away. i like that verizon hasn't spammed the address they gave me, and haven't given it out to others.

I started in the summer of 2004 with a local ISP, paying them $20 and Verizon $37.50 for the line. Soon after, Verizon brought the standard pricing to Ohio, so I switched. Time between dropping local ISP and getting Verizon Online was about two weeks. I was provisioned at 768/128, dynamic IP, PPPoE, Westell VersaLink 327w, for $29.95 plus fees (one year contract) with a fairly smooth install.
A few months later, they started announcing the lower prices and higher speeds. During February and March of this year I tried to upgrade to the better speeds, expecting the 1.5 package due to my previous EWL. After about a dozen calls, at least eight separate orders cancelled with no reason given, and several odd problems with my billing, I found out that the CO (or, more likely, remote terminal)can not handle more than 768/128. This is really annoying since new tests show my EWL is 10,700, which should qualify me for the 3m service.
This summer, after reading the forums here, I decided to try for Fast Path, since I mostly use it for gaming. It took about a month and a half of clueless support people, including three hours on the phone with a tech that swore he was talking to the person making the change while we were speaking, but I finally got the change made. It wasn't as good as I expected, only dropping my first-hop ping from 74ms to 53ms average. This does let me see at least a few servers under 100ms total. The odd thing was my noise margin, attenuation, and transmit power readings all improved, when I was led to expect them to decrease from the change. This made me hope they updated equipment to make the change, so I ordered a speed upgrade again. It was cancelled with no comment, so I guess the CO still can't handle it.
So, with stable speeds and no outages (only one or two brief resets), I do get what they say I should be getting, but it feels like a bad deal when compared to what others get for similar money.
September 01, 2005 - Switched to $14.95 plan, one year commitment, no hassles.
August 2007 - Getting back into gaming (off since January), found my typical 43ms first hop ping will now jump sporadically as high as 800ms, and, once it starts to go bad, averages about 250ms. I have only noticed this during the evening hours, at typical peak times. Speed does not seem to be affected, but it is only at 768k, anyway.

I've had Verizon FIOS for over 2 years now, on the 15/2 Mbps level. It has proven rock-solid reliable, and consistent speed. I typically test between Beaverton OR and SF or Palo Alto at 14.5 - 14.75 Mbps down and 1.8+ up. On rare occasions I noticed a performance decrease, I always traced it down to a problem with my PC or my side of the router! When I got the service, it was twice the speed of Comcast at the same price. Recently Comcast has closed the gap some, my Comcast neighbors see 'Speed Boost' rates of 12 Mbps, but it's unclear if that rate is sustainable. Comcast uploads locally are still far slower than Verizon, at about 256K.
I eagerly await the FIOS HD-TV service, reported to be coming available here near the end of 2007, when I will tell Comcast and their crummy customer service where to go once and for all!
-Satisfied FIOS customer.

Verizon 768k/128k $14.95 a month
My install took nearly two weeks due to my line being hooked up to a bad port at the DSLAM. Once they got it working, the service was acceptable. However, Verizon was not able to deliver 1.5mb service to my home due to distance limitations. $15 a month is a good price though.
12-15-06
Still expected service and still $14.95 for me.

Verizon's tech support has gone down hill, unless you happen to be from India. 768k is slow.
