1500/384. $29.95/ Month, Ordered over phone bundled with POTS, Westel Versalink 327 Modem/ Wireless Router, Dynamic IP...
Have had no outages or anything bad yet. Self install kit arrived in advance of due date, then a few days later, got "Phone Call" from James Earl Jones announcing DSL signal was live and ready. Setup CD was clear and step-by-step. Everything worked the first time and ever since. Dell Dimension 3000, Pentium 4 Processer @3GHz, 512 MB RAM boxen with all the extras...
Overall, happy.
Update: 09/05/2005 Still great. No outages and speed is consistantly fast. It helps that I am less than one mile from CO.
Update: 8/16/2006 Bumped up to 3 MB/s down and 768 KB/s up without having to ask. Still great.
Update: 12/10/2006 Moved to Yucaipa, Ca. One week turnaround/transfer. DSL live on 12/8/2006, as promised. Fully functional. 3 Mb/s down and 768 kb/s up. Works great. I am less than 1/4 mile from CO... "It's ALL good..."
Update: 5 /13 /2007 All is great over here. No outages, and D/U is still the same as last entry. Good pipe.

I have been a Verizon DSL customer for approximately 3 years, but the past 5 or 6 months have been pure hell. I have the 768/128 package. This is the best that Verizon can offer me because of my distance from the Telco. I was always ok with that because Verizon assured me that I would be able to use the service with no trouble. That was true for the most part, but no longer. The first problems started when they decided to upgrade me to the higher speeds, but never told me. I was always told that they could not do that without service issues. Well they did and that when everything went bad. The service was spotty at best and completely down at other times. They diagnosed the problem after about 4 weeks. Hmmm you would think they knew what was going on. Ok but now that I'm back to the old speed I can't stay connected for very long. I'm writting this and I keep checking my modem to see if it is still connected. To continue my story. I have placed so many calls to Verizon I have pretty much given up hope of getting this problem fixed. They say it's my modem, so they send me a new one. No biggie, well until I get a 40.00 charge for the new modem. Had I broken mine or had I asked for a new one I would understand the charge. THEY told me this would fix it. Well it hasn't and I asked for a refund, but we will see if I get it. They have told me it's my firewall. This is the firewall THEY recommended that I use and still do. They send techs out and they can't find anything so they say the line is working. I tell them that if I pick up my phone the internet goes out or I hear static. I was actually told by them, oh thats normal don't worry about it. I have replaced every cable, filter, moved items off my power strip, rebooted, reinstalled done everything I can think of, but they can't or won't fix the problem. I'm going to call Charter today and see what they can do for me, but I'm worried that I won't get any better service out of them.

Having been with DSLExtreme (Verizon) for six years, we just swtiched to Verizon DSL, thus taking both the lines and ISP services from Verizon. Reason: For the same 3000/768, DSLExtreme is now $10/mo. more. Guess FCC rules allowing Teleco's to charge more to CLEC's starting to bite. Verizon sends a CD that they want you to use to do the self install. Didn't relish that prospect, but didn't have to use it! So we are clean of any crapware, Yahoo, MSN, etc. If you don't want it, call tech support and ask for your default starter user ID and PW, login to Verizon.net, change to your own selections, then hit reset on the modem. Viola! Also, Usenet access, mail, etc. easy to configure and worked fine.

I have been with DSL EXREME for over 3 years, when I decided to cancel my service because the rate was too high and shop for a day-suddenly there were facility issues with my telephone number 909 590 1113 I have been without DSL for over 1 1/2 month. This is not acceptable and I feel this is an underhanded way to "steer" me to Cable or Satellite so that VERIZON can retain it's monopoly
I will be taking this up with the FCC and PUC this is not acceptable Mr. AKBAR

I recently upgraded to 3.0 after a long and painful of fighting for 3.0 in Ex-GTE land. So far, it's been awesome having double the download speed and about double the upload. Makes surfing and downloading a lot more enjoyable. Can't wait for FiOS to arrive...

Ordered -- online -- 768/128 in mid-December 2001. Was given a startup date for approx. 14 days later. Westell modem etc. arrived within 10 days and set up without a problem. Activated 2 days before promised date.
We are approx. 13,000 feet from CO and service was not available until 12/01. Since going live we have averaged close to 650 down/ 136 up. Given the distance I am not unhappy with speed.
We experienced the slowdown that affected most of SoCal in April 2002 although connection was never dropped. No explanation from Verizon was ever given to my knowledge.
Verizon's own newsgroups are a good source of information, although the posters are mostly geared to Bell Atlantic.
I have no experience with Tech Support. I have read reviews that rate it from good to extremely poor. I've not had any problem that I feel warrants spending dozens of minutes on the phone. In this respect, though, Verizon's online "help" could be much, much better. It's a chore just trying to find an email address.
Overall the experience has been good. I would never go back to dialup. They will have to pry my Westell from my cold, dead fingers.
[EDIT 5/24/02] After initial post of this review I was immediately contacted by a representative of Verizon, who started the ball roling to deliver the email addresses I had complained weren't delivered. After exchange of a couple of messages, the email addresses were delivered. Although this was not a major issue for me, I appreciate the prompt attention to this mild complaint.
[EDIT 11/29/02] Prompted by The System, I believe that at few points are worthy of update. Verizon nows offers my level of service at $39/mo. with a 12-month contract. We have not taken that offer because Adelphia now offers Powerlink, a temptation we have resisted so far. Verizon has improved its web mail UI slightly and now offers the "Online Support Center" as downloadable software which, from my point of view, is totally useless and does nothing but suck cycles. I still have few comments about Support because, other than the excellent online assistance provided by the good folks who responded to my email gripe in the initial review, I have not had occasion to call Tech Support.
The only mild complaint that I feel merits a comment is that the service occasionally goes out with no explanation (I am not complaining about the outages, which are only slightly annoying; I am complaining about the lack of information). After the usual drills with the router and modem, the outage may continue for up to perhaps 12 hours. When I am able to access the Verizon System Status page, often it will indicate that other localities in SoCal are experiencing "connection issues," but not my ZIP. However, SoCal seems to experience "connection issues" more frequently than many other areas. Again, only a mild complaint. Service has generally been very reliable.
Add Jul 5 '03: Have had 1.5/128 for a little more than a month, tests consistently at about 1300 down/135 up. I am satisfied that Verizon has delivered, particularly with the price reduction and given the fact that I am about 11,000' from CO. Outages occasionally happen but are rare and generally not of long duration. Verizon's revamped site is pretty uninspired and I generally do not frequent the site except to retrieve email from work.
Add June 22 '04: After the Worst Rollout Ever, we did receive the 384 upload upgrade about one month after I was told by a clueless CSR that it would be done "automatically." About one week after I knew that others in my ZIP had already been upgraded, I contacted customer service and was told that we were already provisioned for 384. I contacted Tech Support and got through (the first time) after just a couple minutes' wait. The tech wrote an extensive trouble ticket and indicated a 48-hour response. After three days, no joy. Called TS again, was indicated a 16-minute wait, but actually picked up after about 10 minutes. The tech presumably had the trouble ticket on screen in front of him but went through the entire litany with me again. After about 10 minutes he said I was good to go. Tried the speed test about 5 minutes later and had the upgrade. Despite having to make several calls, I am not dissatisfied with Tech Support. I do wonder about Verizon brass, though, who implement technical or technological changes without sharing their little secret with the CSRs on the front lines. Managing by rumor is not a good way to do business. We did get the price drop to $29.95 without having to beg too much.
Add 07/19/06: FiOS contractors just pulled cable on our street, no word yet on availability. (We are at 11,000+ ft. from CO so DSL limited to 1.5 up.) All in all we remain very satisfied with Verizon DSL, but look forward to FiOS rollout.

! had there 1.5 Mb service when I lived nearby, then I moved, There was an exsisitng 5Mb Roadrunner connection, but then the contract ran out, So I opted back for my DSL ( 3.0Mb service 1 year contract for 29.95 plus fees ) , since I kept my same number when I moved , set up was fast. They shipped out the Westell Versalink Wireless modem. I do not use their software. Set up was easy, everything was drop shipped to my house and connection went on instantly once I set up the modem / router. D/l speed of Verizon usenet servers are horrible, back when I was in the neighboring city and had the 1.5Mb service, there usenet server were decent speedwise. A steady 80KBs on the downstream, now it's about 43KBs on the downstream from the very same server, it seems like they have throttled back there server to discourage usenet use? But downstream from Shemes.com private usenet server ( out of Arizona ) and the connection is much better ( way faster ) to me proving that Verizon throttle there own usenet servers. The funny part is the my old Veriozn email account is still active, so I have 2 seperate Verizon accounts but only being charged for 1. IP is dynamic ( so I has to use Dyndns.com for VPN ), uptime is great save for the occasional outage. But over all I ma very happy with the service ( save for the usenet server )

So I was on the yearly plan and it came for the new year. Rather than automatically put me on it, they put me back to monthly. Gee, I guess all these years with Verizon doesn't mean much.
The e-mail service sucks. I get spam all the time, I get spam on brand new accounts, they block e-mails from educational institutions and from distributed computing projects, but they can't stop the regular SPAM. I don't even SEE what gets blocked... it's all on a blacklist NOBODY sees except Verizon, and then you have to submit a request to have it whitelisted. They do this for websites too.
Now to top it all off, they took away my ability to block spammers through their website because I had "too many entries." Apparently I can only have 300 entries. I had so many entries because I had to block each and every subdomain. If I block spammer.com ... I'd still get SPAM from 123.spammer.com. How stupid can they be? I was notified I had to reduce my entries and given a few weeks to do this, then one week later they stated they were going to go ahead and reduce it for and "temporarily" I would not have access to that. That's been a couple months now.
I sent an e-mail back to the address that e-mailed me about this. No response. E-mailed again today, and I got a generic template response that detailed how to adjust my Outlook. Everytime I contact them I get a generic, irrelevant response. Not that I could explain it all in 80 characters on their form.
I think it's time to find somebody new....
