Pre-Sales information available at www.gte.net was quite good. I felt as if the site was well put together and that gave me some confidence. So, a rating 5 for that.

I called the number listed on the website and signed up for Bronze Plus. The person told me that they would need to do a line test and they would contact me with the results of test within 5 days. The person ALSO gave me a phone number to call "just in case" nobody contacted me with the line test results. Of course, nobody contacted me. After listening to several recordings and getting pushed around to different places, I somehow (luckily) found someone at a totally different sales office that knew what they were doing (chip.hill@telops.gte.com). He discovered that there was no record of my previous order and scheduled a line test for the next day. Two days later, I got an e-mail from him telling me the results of the test and giving me an installation date. On that date, the technician showed up promptly at 8:30am. He was quite competent and installed all the hardware in about 20 minutes. However, the modem could not connect so he had to drive to the station and change some setting. After this, the modem was able to connect. I turned on my computer and was connected to the Internet directly! BUT, the connection really sucked. I was getting something like 40kbps on downloads. I called and talked to people in tech support, but they were totally useless. Nobody knew anything and I was becoming quite frustrated. Then I remembered that I had done some tweaking of MTU and RWIN and such for my 33.6k modem connection. I thought that maybe these settings were not good for ADSL. So, I reverted back to the windows default settings and my download average went up to 450kbps. Of course, I still am paying for 768k so I went back and tweaked stuff (RWIN in particular) so that now I get about 550-600kbps on average and peaks of over 700 sometimes. All things considered, I am happy with this level of performance. Online gameplay of Unreal and Quake 3 is simply fantastic.

My experience with GTE has been great thus far. I ordered the Bronze + package. Line check went o.k. and install setup 2 weeks out. First guy showed up and was great - installed new line and splitter box, and left the modem. Time begun to pass and I hadn't heard from the 2nd fellow that was to show up. I had called 3 times in the weeks prior to my install to confirm that absolutely everything was in order - don't have vacation days left to waste this late in the year. Additionally, I'd read some horror stories about problems, so I made numerous representatives go over the details repeatedly. The 2nd 1/2 of my order was misplaced, but a supervisor got on the line and politely asked me to hold, which I was happy to do. She contacted someone and he did show up by 6 p.m. - which was the promised time. He was there probably an hour. Up and running, no problems at all.

I added a card to my laptop - not that I'll use it to surf very often, but for upgrades, etc. No recognition when I plugged the line in, so I called tech support. He explained the process of getting a new IP address - which I stupidly hadn't thought of. The only negative thing I can say is that he seemed genuinely offended that I would have the unmittigated gaul to use 2 IP addresses on a service designed for only one - telling me that I was contributing to the problem of rapidly disappearing IP addresses. The sales person I spoke with (I know, don't laugh) said it was perfectly fine to use the service this way.

All in all, kudos to GTE in Texas. Its been about 3 weeks and I can't keep up with the speed, so I am one satisfied customer.

ADSL at 384x384. The information on availability was sketchy and difficult to find on the GTE site, but once found, the personnel were knowledgable and helpful. The order was completed at the time specified, and the tech was very helpful in answering questions. The IP, through GTE as the ISP, is dynamic. The speed, using test sites, is as expected. Minimal variance at different times of the day. Equipment is Orkit.

I can't really say what the actual connection was like, since GTE never showed up to install it. I was told to wait at home all day for two days and they never came. Repeated phone calls to find out what was going on were ignored. When they finally figured out they hadn't come out, they offered me a $25 credit as compensation for wasting two days of my life. I strongly recommend using another provider to anyone else who reads this.

I ordered Bronze+(768/128) along w/ GTE Internet as the ISP. The order process went well. They told me they had to test a line. It would take 5-7 business days. 5 days later, they call. I passed. So I proceed to order. They gave me Dynamic IP, but as i am typing this, I've had the same IP for over a week, so maybe it is static, but their techs are a little cuckoo? I don't know. What I do know is that the speed is great. I frequently get 100K/sec on sites. One problem though. GTE subcontracts out to some company called VOLT. These people are total morons. They tell me that they'll be here "within 4pm and 6pm to give me the contracts." They call at 6:30 wanting to reschedule! Of course, I have to. So, I feel this has nothing to to with GTE per se, so thats why I rated them so high.

I was lucky enough to learn that dsl was available in my city thanks to a good friend. GTE has not published our city on the availability page yet. I purchased the Bronze plus package @ 768/128 and it seems to work pretty good. It averages about 816kbps upload at the moment. Download is less than 128 by quite a bit. One thing that did go wrong was that they were supposed to email me with info for coming out to my house to do the job. Four days later I emailed them back and that got me stuck way back in line because of their mistake. Not happy about that. Install was without problems and the tech was a very nice guy. The Volt tech called me just as the tech drove up that day so we did the configuration after the install was complete with no problems. Tech support is sort of lacking. If you get a data light blinking on the dsl modem I suggest you unplug the unit and plug it back in. They havent figured that one out yet when your service slows to a crawl, check the modem lights. The ip address is supposed to be dynamic but it has yet to change since it was installed and the Volt tech said his has not changed since installation about 90 days ago. All things considered not a bad deal.

Using the gold (768/768)package with a dynamic ip for 127.50 monthly. Thats for the connection and the isp service. I decided to go with GTE all the way.

The connection has been rock solid. Getting signed up was a little shaky at first, some bigtime miscommunication with what I was eligible for and the prices. We finaly got it all strait and I wound up downgrading from the Platinum to the Gold.

Setup was a snap. I had a good tech who knew what he was doing. He came in with the splitter, showed me how it worked, gave me some pointers and even mumbled something about getting rid of my second line! I was up and running in about 15 minutes :^)

The need for speed!! Wow! Hold on kiddies cause we are outta here :^) What can I download next? I used to dream about having a connection like this. It's worth my 128 bucks and the 4 week install wait...

    I ordered the bronze+ and I get pretty consitant(sp) Speeds of 694.
The instalation was a bit shakey, but when they got it together it went fine.
I have a static IP and I'm getting more speed then I expected.
Technical support is not great but I've only had to use them once. Overall I would give them a thumbs up in value and speed. If you can get past the installation process you've got it made!

In August, I subscribed to GTE ADSL, also using GTE Net as my ISP. When I
began my DSL research, The GTE DSL Web page indicated that GTE did not
support the Mac platform. A month later when I called GTE, I was assured that
it DID support the Mac. This proved to be totally false information. When the
technician was at my home doing the installation setup, the service worked
fine. The moment he left I could no longer access the Internet. I should have
known that I was in for trouble when I looked at the customer info CD the
technician left me and saw that it was for pc's. Calls to GTE tech support
made me immediately aware that they knew absolutely nothing about the Mac.
They further said that they had no plans to create a customer info CD for the
Mac. I spent a week in a trial-and-error mode before I was successful in
getting the line to access the Internet. I do a lot of research on the
Internet and a lot of downloading. The speed of loading pages and downloading
large files has been phenomenal, although I've never reached the top speed my
service is supposed to provide, 750Kbps. 500 Kbps is the best I've ever done.
The service is working fine except that I get a lot of error messages saying
that a network socket or URL can't be found. Also, I've never been able to
set up an email account at the ISP, Netscape or Explorer. This tells me that
my Internet Access arrangements have not yet been properly configured.
Neither GTE nor Apple have been able to help me with the configuration. I
sent GTE Net an email complaining that they mislead me into thinking that
they could provide support for my Mac. A couple of weeks later I received a
reply and the first sentence read, "You are absolutely right." The rest of
the message was boilerplate that didn't address any of my issues. I've spent
dozens of hours trying to resolve my problems. I'm going to take one more
crack at trying to get help from tech support. If this isn't successful, I'm
going to cancel my service and look for a provider who knows the Mac.
