I've read bad things about NCTC's dsl service on here. People complain that they pay for 128k connections, and can only download at 20-25KB speeds. That's because 128k is actually only a 16KB connection (128kb/8b). I'd say 20-25 is pretty good, because that's pushing 200k-256k connections.
I subscribed for the 768k service, and I average around 91KB (728k) downloads. It is slightly slower than advertised, but then again, 'speeds vary and aren't guaranteed.' I've had DSL for about 1.5 years, and only had one instance in which the line was down. And this was due to maintenance, and they warned us a week in advance that the line woud be down during a Sunday night. No problems at all.
Until comcast moves their service into town, I really can't complain.

I have North Central Telephone Cooperative, parent company is blue.net (did not find North Central Telephone Cooperative on dslreports.com I've had dsl at least for 2 years now from North Central Telephone Cooperative, i used to be able to download speeds at 30kb-60kb, higher which i thought i was good. Now i'm getting 25kb and less speeds, its getting horrible right now, i've never had such a bad connection. I used to be able to download two/three things at once, and surf the web at the same time, now i am not. I can't download and still be able to surf the web anymore. All my friends are getting the same thing, what happened to all the good speeds we used to get? Nctc's dsl is downgrading all the time.
Site for North Central Telephone Cooperative is »www.nctc.com

| Slow Speeds The 30-60KB download speeds were well above your contracted 128kb speed. A 128 Kb download rating is actually only 16KB download speed as seen downloading files from the internet.
128kb is different than 128KB. Advertised speed ratings are in kb/s, while downloads from the web show as KB/s. Difference? Kilobits vs. Kilobytes. 8 bits in a byte.
That's why a 56kb modem only gave out between 5 and 7 KB/s download speed. Take 56k, divide by 8, and you have your download speed in KB.
Bottom line, if you get 16KB or more download speed (my in-laws get 20 usually), then you're getting MORE than advertised, which is a plus. | |

| crap connection i subscribed to 768k plan it sucks. 768/8 = 96. but my download speed is only at 70kb. i also did multiple speed test here and only hit 456kb. supports a joke. tried to charge me $10 service charge when i upgraded. they lady told me that the tech guy is gonna install my dsl. ???? whats? i told her he does not have to and guess what she said. "ok". i might have to drive up there one day to c if there is a monkey working there because i swore i talked to one. what we need is a bellsouth or a verzion isp. cheaper and more reliable. o i almost forgot. NCCT are not computer techs. i u ever ask them a question they better have it on there computer screen. otherwise, don't expect an answer. | |

I was a previous customer of BellSouth, and I decided to keep a log of my experience. My transition to BlueGrass was fast and easy, and the customer service was awesome.
3/1/04 I called into Bellsouth's Internet DSL Customer Support. They ran tests on my line, and indicated that the low ping response was not guaranteed to outside locations. This began approximately 2 months ago, and has gotten much worse as time has gone on. 3/2/04 So I was able to get "ok" download speeds of 140-160KB/s, (appx 1Mbit) but was not getting the 190KB/s (1.5MBit) that I was used to. I called on this problem, and the response was that 1.5Mbit would be the maximum that I would get, and that rate is not guaranteed either, in fact she said the average is around .8Mbit to 1Mbit. So, I waited this out, to see if it got any better, but it got worse. As indicated in my Traceroutes, my traffic was moving from Louisville, to Dallas, to Los Angeles, to the Louisville Location. And to go from Louisville to DC (A national carrier in DC who has peering with over 200 providers) it also went to Dallas before going North to DC. So after multiple tests, I was going to now be at a minimum of 18 hops where my ping response times started at 90-100 before reaching any other locations in the US. And the ping response times would be well over 80-100 on various local locations. Seeing as this is very unacceptable, because of a few things. 1. My internet speeds have decreased beyond reason. 2. My response times to other servers have decreased to beyond usable. I switched to BGN on March 12, 2004 and can say that my responses have greatly increased, and my download speeds are back to usable for DSL. I had to pay BellSouth 50/mth for something that was barely worth $20. Also, the same locations in Dallas and DC I ping 30-45 where on BellSouth it was a minimum of 90-100. The improvement was like moving from Dialup to DSL originally, now I've gone from cheap oversold DSL at Bellsouth to Reliable, Stable, and FAST DSL at Bluegrass. For $49 per month and a static IP this is the best deal in the Louisville, KY area. If you can get Bellsouth DSL you can get Bluegrass.Net. 6 days to live and it was Bellsouths fault it took that long. These guy are great. I worked with them on X-Mas Eve to establish service. They went way beyond the call of duty. They also offer a suite of business class services from hosting to T-1's.
Being an Ex-Covad employee, these guy know what they are talking about and really have a solid offering.

Upgraded to 10:1 oversubscription and feel the difference immediately! The connection is very stable, reliable, and the tech support staff of Bluegrass are great. No issues to report at all, very pleased customer.
Speeds average in the 1200 range download and 220 range upload. I run an FTP server and the folks who connect report awesome upload speeds, even from Holland!
I highly recommend Bluegrass.net if you are in the Louisville area. Static IP, good monthly rate, easy setup, fantastic support staff...what more do you want?

this is a great ISP for kentucky, I have used a-dsl for about a year now. Bellsouth tech support is good, but they are sometimes slow to respond, being at the DSL limit is tough, becuase if there is anything wrong or messed up about the phone line, the dsl gets cut off. I get a static IP which is nice for gaming and hosting servers. this is much better than bellsouth dsl, since it comes with a static IP address.

I have used Bluegrass.net for over a year and have always had great download speeds with ping times under 15msec to gaming servers. I paid the extra $$ for 768x768 service when it used to be offered because I have several unix servers running at my house that do everything from hosting my personal domain for web and email, to running FTP and game servers. I pay $135 a month but that includes a $68 loop charge and $15 for a 255.255.255.248 subnet mask. Thats right, for $15 more dollars a month they gave me my own static subnet with 6 usable IP's which makes my gaming experience FANTASTIC. No more port redirects and connection sharing for me mom! And as cheap as those linksys routers are on ebay ($45) it made setting up a router/LAN in my house simple without trying to do make-shift routing with a PC and tying up its resources. Recently AllTel has taken over for Verizon and I have learned that they, unlike verizon, will not fix problems as they occur on a weekend. Guess thats why its called a 'best effort service' - no guarantee's.

I can't imagine getting the same personal service from Insight BB (no matter what Bob Sokoler and Terry Meiner say!!) When the cable goes out I can never get anyone on the phone.
I ordered DSL at $45/month and was able to order over the telephone. According to BluegrassNet, BellSouth had DSL ready on my line within 3 days of ordering. Instead of shipping the modem for self installation as the salesperson had informed, a BluegrassNet employee who lives near my neighborhood personally delivered it and helped with the installation (thank god). It seemed easy enough but the person had to call BellSouth who had apparently not finished the DSL order beforehand.
The modem is an Ethernet DSL modem that is supposed to support more than 1 computer although I only have one connected. It came with a static address. Because of the modem it's also supposed to provide some protection from hackers without having to run any special programs.
I've recommended them to coworkers and would do the same for anyone else.

I've had my dsl with BluegrassNet for almost a year now and I have yet to suffer any type of outage due to them. I have on one or two occasions been down for about an hour because of Bellsouth, but the matter was resolved pretty quickly after BluegrassNet intervened on my behalf.
When i signed up they only had the $60 a month plan, but now they have a $45 standard plan and a $60 premium plan. I stuck with the $60 due to a lower oversubscription rate and reliability of a faster connection. I have a friend who also has BluegrassNet dsl running on the $45 standard package and I'd have to say its as reliable as my premium and almost as quick even during peak times.
The installation charge from Bellsouth for the $45 standard dsl and the $60 premium dsl service has even dropped to $60 from $110 for residential dsl. You can also buy the equipment from them for $130 for a modem and $150 for a router.
I used to have @home cable service before it turned into insighbb and i'd have to say the service is 10 times more reliable. My cable maybe went out maybe 10 times at most in the 2.5 years I had it, but when it did it was out for almost a week at a time, even after repeated calls to tech support. I'm not trying to badmouth insightbb, but once I moved and found out I qualified for dsl at my new place I went with BluegrassNet and I've never looked back.
What more can I say? Phenomenal Bandwidth, Excellent Customer Support, Competitive Pricing and Quick Installation.

We were dumped by bluestar.net, then found bluegrass.net. We ordered the 1.5 mbps x 256 Kbps dsl line. Installation and setup was $990. The monthly charge is $85 which includes 10 mailboxes, web hosting and a sonicwall. We have had a much better connection and less down time than we ever had with bluestar (and we were paying $165/month for their terrible service and no customer service). Bluestar had our system installed within 10 days. The customer service has been wonderful. They are very accessible, by phone or email and respond quickly to problems.
