I ordered their Basic DSL Plus at first, it was said that I could get it in my area, but in actuality it turns out I couldn't . Oh well, just a little peeve. I have a static IP that is 1.5mbps down and 384kbps up. So far, pretty good speeds and reliability. Installation and equipment were both free, as was my first month. I am very happy with this service, much better than Earthlink DSL. I'd recommend this ISP definitely!

Many, many years into my relationship with TOL. Speeds have done nothing but gone up (I'm now averaging over 2450 down and 440 up). Customer service has remained consistently first class. The only problems I have ever had (one or two) were with SBC and TOL ran interference for me to get those resolved quickly.

If you want to be treated right, this is where you HAVE to be.

Oplink is the third ISP that I have had experience and it has been excellent. They have always been responsive to any problem or glitch that has arisen. No service is perfect but they come close. I use both the DSL Internet service and also use a digital phone service provider. A DSL providers service must maintain higher carrier rock solid speeds for the digital phone service to function properly. MIne does using Oplink. In the past I've used Time Warner Roadrunner and found their service intermittant at best. There were months when the phone service from Vonage could not operate due to Time Warner's equipment and service. With TM a service call must be scheduled and it may be more than a week before a serviceman shows up. When they do show up it is a 50/50 chance the repair will be made properly. Awful, absolutely awful. If you don't like somebody recommend to them using Time Warner and you can be assured their time will be occupied trying ot keep their system up and running. My first encounter with broadband was with SBC who were just getting started in DSL. The service was a similar experience to that I had with Time Warner. I was paying for their learning curve. It was the same type of problem as with TM. Thankfully at the time I was not using a digital phone service.

My experience with Oplink has been excellent. It is refreshing. They have worked at getting and keeping my system running properly. In almost a year that I have been with them my service has been exceptional. The phone system has performed to expectations with strong carrier speeds and characteristics. Recently I have had to rebuild my hard disk. It was erased due to my own fault and not that of Oplink. They have aided me greatly in getting back on line and operating. I recently took my computer to their office to sort connection and interface problems. They spent the time necessary to get me back up and running. Oplink appears to take pride in their service and strive to improve it. Recently they increased their minimum line speeds at no additional cost to the users. Would your ISP do the same without wanting more money? Better yet does your ISP provide reliable service? I've not found any unexplained charges in their billings.

Oplink is trustworthy and I recommend them highly..

"The fact that I had to deal with Roadrunner first."
"Oplink owns Roadrunner, by a long shot."

First off, I want to say that not only am I incredibly pleased with the service and speed, but having to deal with Roadrunner cable for 9 months was just repetitive. It was just repetitive with Roadrunner. Everything always failed, I got service shutouts so many times, over and over again. My speeds were suffering insanely. Roadrunner advertised 2.6K Downloads, but I was getting 300s, and I have the screenshots to prove it, at their own site!

I got tired of my speed suffering, so I contacted a friend of mine, who told me about Oplink DSL. I called Oplink and they had the modem sent to me and installed, set up, everything, within about a week. It was up and running in no time, and I was gaming within a heartbeat. The only problem I had turned out to be the XBox, and not the DSL.

Now, before I continue, I have to say that, as gamers, we need the best speeds possible for minimal budget. I got that from oplink, with upload speeds up to about 502 kb/s, and downloads of about 3000 kb/s. Meanwhile, where with Roadrunner I was paying what I'm paying with Oplink, I was getting, as I said, downloads if 300-700 kb/s, and uploads of about 212 kb/s. That's well over twice the speed for the same price.

On a side note, I have stricken a boycott with Roadrunner, thanks to their poor customer service, speeds, and reliability. Outages were all too common and severe. Often times, I missed competitions, forcing my team to lose them, because of outages with Roadrunner. It wasn't just during bad weather, either. This was a regular thing. The best speed I ever got with them was about 2400 kb/s, which is horrible for what they advertise. I wasn't even far from the Remote Terminal, either!

Now with Oplink, I've had the best customer service ever, a sweet deal, and I can hold multiple dedicated gaming servers at once, still browse the web, download, and everything. Oplink has given me the quality of a T1 connection, in my opinion, for a small fraction of the price. I truly do love my oplink connection, and the service the guys have given me. Any problems (though still not many) that I've ever had, they've taken care of on the spot.

The moral of the story: Oplink OWNS Roadrunner, SBC Yahoo, AND Earthlink. COMBINED. Way to go, Oplink. Stay awesome.

Update: There's no telling how long it's been since I've posted this thing, but I'm still as satisfied as I've ever been with Oplink. We had one outage the other day, but an EMail was sent explaining it all, and explaining that minor maintenance would take place to correct it a few days after. They took care of the problem quickly, and you could barely even tell that they had to take the connections offline for the maintenance. I was disconnected for fifteen minutes, tops, before I was up and running again. This is also the first maintenance they've needed in a while.

In a nutshell, I recommend Oplink to any Houstonian who isn't satisfied with their connection. Even if you are, Oplink can probably top most DSL and Cable deals in the Houston area, that I've heard of. The only thing that might be able to top it is T1+. Excellent work by the guys down at Oplink.

"Excellent alternative to SBC and EV1 Hosting"

I am a DSL business user, and Oplink hosts my website. I recently moved my hosting account from EV1 Servers, because I was unable to get my email from EV1 for over 48 hours last December. The move was done in less than one hour, and no email was lost.

I have used Oplink DSL since 2001, when Northpoint went bankrupt. It took SBC over a month to get the service installed, but that does not reflect badly on Oplink. They were very supportive and thorough in getting SBC to respond as quickly as possible. SBC was just slow to assign an install date, and then postponed it even later.

Oplink's service is fast (1500/384) and ultra-reliable. The only unscheduled downtime I have experienced was due to an SBC fiber optic cable being damaged. And, during that time, Oplink provided a temporary dial-up connection.

I want to especially commend Oplink's tech support, which is very responsive, and can usually diagnose problems quickly over the telephone. One example is when the cable between my modem and router failed, and Ryan was able to quickly isolate the problem, providing me with a new cable, and modem as well, the same day.

The bottom line is Optimal Link is an excellent alternative to cable or dial-up service. And, if you don't want to hassle with the slow and inconsistent tech support at SBC or EV1, Oplink is a reliable, dedicated local ISP in Houston that deserves your business.

Before I switched to Optimal Link, I used Earthlink for my DSL service. Overall I was satified with EarthLink except that my maximum download speeds were only ~500 kbps. I contacted Earthlink tech support and they were unable to do anything to improve my speed. They suspected that the problem was with my telephone line. I am only 7000 feet form the CO and I did the tweaks suggested by Earthlink which did not help.

I then decided to switch to another ISP that could give faster speeds for the same price. Reviews for Optimal Link on Broadband Reports were generally favorable. So I contacted Optimal Link to get DSL. This company is also a local provider in Houston.

They said that I should be getting over 1 mbps download speeds on my line. Also this connection is an always on conection with dynamic IP that does not use PPPOE (unlike my EarthLink DSL). The Economy DSL package from Optimal Link offers download speeds up to 1.5 Mbps and upload speeds up to 128 Kbps.

SBC sent the equipment (Speedstream 5360) only 3 days after my order was placed and my connection was to be set up on Feb. 6 (7 days after the order was placed).

Unfortunately, Feb 6 came and went and I was still not connected. I called Optimal Link tech support which promply sent a trouble ticket to SBC. Unfortunately SBC could not correct the problem until Monday Feb 10. This morning Feb 10, I found that my connection was working.

According to the speed test from Broadband Reports, My download speed is 1214 kbps and my upload speed is 137 kpbs. The download speed with Optimal Link is more than double my speeds from EarthLink.

My Earthlink DSL connection was very reliable. I will update my review in a couple of weeks in order to comment on my connection reliabillty with Optimal Link.

So far I am very satisfied with Optimal Link.

    UPDATE (3/1/03)

I have had DSL from Oplink for 3 weeks and everything is working great. My download speeds have been consistently above 1 Mbps with upload speeds between 135-137 Kbps. The majority of the download speed tests on Broadband Reports and PC Pitstop gave results between 1.2-1.3 Mbps. Actually the PC Pitstop speed tests often resulted in download speeds above 1.3 Mbps.

I have had not had disconnects or any service interruptions. I used the PC Pitstop Trace Route Utility which showed that I had good ping times (20-40 ms over 10 hops) and no packet loss.

If you live in Houston, I would recomend Optimal Link for DSL.

    UPDATE (12/2/04)

My DSL service from Oplink continues to be very reliable. Download speeds are consistently around 1.3 Mbps for a 1.5 Mbps connection. The upload speed has been increased from 128 to 384 Kbps several months ago. My measured upload speed is around 340 Kbps.

I recently signed a 1 year contract to take advantage of the cheaper $29.95/month rate instead of the $49.95/month no contract rate. The switch to a 1 year contract was very simple and I did not notice any interuption in service though I was told that the service would be interupted for perhaps a few hours.

I remain a very satisfied Oplink customer.

I am demanding and hard to please, but Oplink has impressed me. They provided expert technical assistance quickly and without the hassel that I have become accustomed to with other ISP's. I have multiple domains, my own dns server, host my own websites and I needed static IP's and e-mail services. They requested that my old ISP (SBC) do a hotswap on my account, so the switch happened the same day. I even used an alternate router and they were able to advise me how to configure it with only a vague idea of what equipment I had. They got my DNS right, my websites are finally functioning, and my e-mail was working before I even called SBC to cancel my accounts with them. I cannot say enough about how easy it was to switch. If you want superior tech support and service, choose these guys.

    Some background:

I was an MSN DSL customer (why????), simply my PC came with free dialup, and when I got fed up with dial-up I simply went for the DSL option, which was competitive (at that time). Disaster then struck. My DSL modem would stop working every now and then due to things they do on the line. Then it is reloading of firmware and resetting and re-signing in, and every time I have to get rid of the cr**** MSN explorer. And the support sucks, could do with a few more brain cells.

So as soon I got wind of MSN dumping the Bell DSLs (some support persons still deny that they were dropping SBC), I cancelled my DSL, and after reading the reviews here, decided to give Oplink a try. Fully expecting a nightmare swopping from MSN I just gave Ryan my details, and a few minutes later my order was confirmed. When my MSN modem stopped working, I installed the Oplink modem, and everything worked fine the first time.

I can really recommend these guys. It always shows when there are actually some IQ on the other end of a phone line. Their prices are slightly higher than SBC Yahoo, but at least I'm no longer a number, and no software tries to take over my system. Support is immediate (sometimes from the CEO!) and actually makes sense. I once had a connection problem, which turned out to be my D-link NIC fried. Got a new one, everything fine.

I ordered Standard DSL 1.5Mbps 256Kbps $49.95, $19.95 for the first six months. No contract. I tested my speeds, and they came out approx to these values. I especially like the DHCP option. So much easier.

Bottom line, I no longer have to spend hours troublehooting stuff not of my own making.

After the initial 6 months, the price reverted to the original $49, and with all the taxes it comes out to just above $50 a month for nearly flawless connections without any problems so far. I still like Oplink!

Our DSL wouldn't connect to the internet, greatly impairing our ability to send and receive emails and get on the internet. The support team at Oplink was very receptive to our request in helping to resolve this matter. Step-by-step help was given in order to resolve the problem; tech-support team was very patient. When the problem was not corrected after numerous tries, we were sent new filters to see if that would solve the problem. When the filters didn't work, we were sent a new modem and from then on we have had no problem with the internet, email, etc.

It is very comforting knowing that qualified technicians are available 24 hours a day to help with internet problems.

After several years with Earthlink, they suddenly lost the ability to consistently receive e-mail, and I suddenly had a 60ms first hop, after having a 12ms first hop for years. Several unsatisfying calls and chats later, I was shopping on broadbandreports.com. The numbers and reviews pointed to Oplink.

A polite and professional phone call had me signed up. Since I already had ADSL thru earthlink, they were able to "hot swap" I think was the term, and said SBC needed 5 working days to swap. Those 5 days did get stretched to 10, but I was never without service. The equipment package arrived 3 days after the initial phone call.

Once SBC had the line provisioned properly, the difference was pleasing. 12ms first hop, no PPPoE, 200meg webspace (earthlink was 80 in 10meg chunks). I've had a few questions and have gotten excellent response every time.
