IEEE 802.11 is a standard for wireless network connectivity using either Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) or Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum.
This term originally referred to communication speeds up to 2Mbps in 2.4Ghz band, but it is now often used it identify all 802.11 family of protocols such as 802.11b, 802.11a, 802.11g, etc. The MAC level specification that covers these procols can be downloaded
