Some of this would seem fairly obvious, but I had problems when unplugging my ATA in order to move it to another location.

  1. Make sure the firmware is not being upgraded right at that moment (the easiest way would be to check for a dial tone--if the unit is connected to your phone--as that means it is online)

  2. Remove the ethernet and telephone cables from the back of the ATA

  3. Unplug the ATA from the wall (not from the back of the ATA--I got sparks doing it that way)

I had the bad luck of needing a new ATA sent out after moving it. Although it's hard to know why it stopped working, the above procedure should avoid the most likely causes (i.e. electrical spike due to lack of grounding, or data being written to the unit at the moment of powering it down).
