TM Net press statement on Oct 4
You’ve heard about broadband Internet, such as tmnet streamyx, and know that you can do more with a high-speed connection.
You know you don’t have to dial-up into Broadband Internet. You can connect instantly and still use your phone to make calls.
But there are still some things that puzzle you about broadband. You have friends who rave about its speeds and friends who complain about the slow connection.
Some say they were connected a week after applying for tmnet streamyx and others have waited for weeks for a connection.
Yet, it’s the same service. Confused? Don’t be. There is nothing at all complicated or mystifying about broadband. Don’t fall for the common myths and misconceptions.
Myth 1: I can get tmnet streamyx broadband service anywhere in Malaysia. Fact: •Broadband is NOT available everywhere. •The broadband service can only be pushed to your home Broadband if the TM exchange in the area has available ADSL ports.
Myth 2: If I have a fixed telephone line, I can subscribe to tmnet streamyx service Fact: •You need a TM direct telephone line to connect to the tmnet streamyx ADSL system. •You need to check if there is an available ADSL port at TM’s exchange.
•tmnet streamyx does not support keyphones and PABX lines.
Myth 3: My neighbour or friend in the same town gets tmnet streamyx, I can too. Fact: •You still need to check if there is an available port. •The copper wire to your house should not be more than 5km from the supporting TM exchange. •For optimum copper quality, your house should be within 3km from the supporting TM exchange.
Myth 4: tmnet streamyx service is more expensive than a dial-up service Fact: •If your average daily Internet usage is more than 2 hours per day, it is more economical to use broadband Internet. •For example, using dial-up for 60 hours of surf time each month, you pay RM90 a month for the maximum speed of only 56Kbps! •Using Broadband, you get up to 10X the dial-up speed and pay only RM44 a month for 60 hours of surfing time
Myth 5: I should be getting 100% of the subscribed speed Fact:
Broadband speed is based on best effort and factors such as:
•Quality of the copper cable •Distance from the supporting TM exchange •Weather; Electromagnetic Effect •PC performance •Internet traffic during the period •Website that you visit •However, you should be connected at least 70% of the subscribed speed for 95% of the time, in accordance with the MCMC MCA Act 1998 on Quality of Broadband Access Service requirement. •Eg: If you subscribed to the 1MB package, you should at least be getting 700kbps.
Myth 6: Upload and download speeds are supposed to be the same Fact: •When viewing Web pages, video or e-mail using the Internet, you are downloading. •Usually, people download more than they upload, so the download speeds are faster.
Myth 7: Broadband penetration is low and more expensive compared to countries like South Korea, Singapore Fact: •Broadband penetration in Malaysia is around 7.4%. Broadband penetration in Korea is only around 25%. (Source: ITU 2005 Report, Computimes, NST, pg10, 08.09.2005) •Currently, broadband prices offered by TM Net are among the cheapest. Singaporeans and Australians pay USD0.023 and USD0.059 per kbps per month respectively, but Malaysians pay USD0.021 per kbps per month. (Source: IDC Communications Report 2004)
