Flare A free and simple weather program that can be loaded on any computer to display general and hazardous weather information. Flare is a user customizable weather display system that can run continuously on your pc or laptop, and can display general forecasts, specialized forecasts (such as for pilots, fire fighters, or hazmat units), continuous weather observations, and climate data. It even comes with a customizable loop feature that allows the user to loop through graphical displays such as radar, satellite, watch/warning/advisory maps, situational awareness pages, and even webcams.
Flare can be downloaded from here
1.) Running as an Administrator, double click on Flare.msi
2.) After a few clicks, a command prompt will pop up and ask you some questions.
If you need help with the answers, read the following:
i.) To find your CWA, click here and hold your mouse over the closest circle from where you live. In the lower left hand corner of your browser notice the link that pops up when you do this; your CWA are the last 3 letters in the link.
ii.) To find a METAR Site for your area click here. You need to go to your local NWS page to find which metar txt file represents a location in your area.
iii.) To find your county code go here and click on the state you live in. You will find a fully numeric county code but you need to convert it so a few of the numbers are letters. Ignoring the first 0, all you do is look up the next two numbers here and replace them with the two letter state code instead. The next number is a zero, you need to replace this with a "C" for county code. For Example:
•Rancho Cucamonga is in San Bernardino County, CA and its code is 006071 ==> CAC071 for county code
•Salt Lake City is in Salt Lake County, UT and its code is 049035 ==> UTC035 for county code
iv.) To find your local zone code click here.
All you do for this is notice your state letters, like CA, or UT, and add a "Z" after them for zone, and them add the last zone numbers as in the pdf file. For example:
•If you live in the "San Bernardino and Riverside County Valleys -
The Inland Empire" zone then you find it on the list under CA, for California, and
write CAZ048 because 048 is the zone code for this particular zone.
•If you live in "Salt Lake a Tooele Valleys" zone then you find it on the list under UT, for Utah, and write UTZ003 because 003 is the zone code for this particular zone.
v.) Lastly to find which ridge radar your area uses simply look at my picture attached to see how to find it.
