The 2008 Backup and Imaging Software Poll is complete, and DSLR Software Forum members let us know about their favorite applications.

Disk Imaging was the favorite backup method for the vast majority (about 80%) of members. For the PC, the overwhelming winner was Acronis True Image with 43% of the overall votes. And, considering it was only a few weeks old, the clear winner in the Mac world was Time Machine with 5% of the total.

Other popular PC imaging applications included Ghost (9%),the various versions of Paragon Drive Backup (3%), and Drive Image XML (2%). Rounding out the PC field was Vista's Backup and Restore (2%), and Windows Home Server (1%). Mac users also liked Carbon Copy Cloner (4%), and SuperDuper! (2%).

File/Folder Backup software leans more toward individual file and/or folder backup and synchronization, and the distinction between imaging can become blurred. As hard drives become cheaper and imaging more mainstream, the file backup programs are less frequently used. The following applications were mentioned most often, in order of preference:

For the PC -
Karen's Replicator
Cobian Backup
EMC Retrospect
SyncBackSE
Windows Live Onecare
Backup4all
Windows NT Backup

For the Mac -
.Mac Backup
EMC Retrospect

Other applications which received only a handful of votes (or none at all) may still warrant your investigation:
TeraByte Image
Bacula
Genie Backup Manager
NovaBackup
Partimage
PC Backup
WinBackup
HDClone
NTI Shadow
Backup Magic
Comodo Backup
File Backup Watcher
Handy Backup
JaBack
Roxio BackOnTrack
Drive Snapshot
Casper
Second Copy
NetRestore

Finally, about one in twenty users stated that they have no backup strategy (!)
