First you need to telnet to your Zyxel ADSL modem. Go to Control Panel => Network. Select the TCP/IP entry for your ethernet card from the list of network components installed.

Click the properties button, then click the IP Address tab. Activate the "Select IP Address" button and enter 10.0.0.x (where x is a number between 2 and 255) for the IP Address and 255.255.255.0 for the Subnet Mask. Click OK and reboot your computer.

Now open a DOS window and type telnet 10.0.0.1 at the DOS prompt. The command line interface for the modem will appear. Enter mspgzyx as the password. (NOTE: Earthlink currently ship the Zyxel modem with this IP address and password, which may differ from the information provided in the setup instructions).

Some useful information about your connection can then be viewed. Menu 24.1 gives system status info, such as line status, upstream and downstream sync speed. Menu 24.8 starts the command interpreter mode. At the command prompt, type wan adsl chandata to determine if you're on fast channel or interleave channel mode. Type wan adsl line far or wan adsl line near to get your upstream or downstream line noise margin and attenuation. Type exit to quit command interpreter mode.

WARNING: It is not recommended that you add or modify any data in your modem unless explicitly instructed to by Earthlink technical services. It is important for you to know that telneting to your modem can void your modem warranty.
