Embarq utilizes multiple backbone providers. In general, any latency found via trace-routes on the Embarq side of the network consistently over 300 MS should be reported to technical support. Note: Customers using PPPoE may experience higher trace routes and ping values than DHCP, Static, or PPPoA customers. Updated on 03/25/08. Please note, that while Embarq considers 300 MS latency as acceptable, there are others who would argue that this high of a level of latency is not acceptable for them.
This really needs some further explanation. 400mS (almost 1/2 second!) within a single network (SprintLink) is absolutely terrible, and indicates that the network is either severely overloaded or in need of upgrading. This FAQ item could be referring to the rather notorious section of Embarq's network in Mansfield Ohio that has been overloaded and underperforming during peak hours for the past two years. A more interesting FAQ item would be one which details what Embarq is doing (or plans to do) to correct the engineering problems they have had in Mansfield. | |||||
