All Alcatel SpeedTouch Home Ethernet DSL modems have a 12 character product code located on the bottom of the modem. The product code can be used to determine the capabilities of the particular unit. This product code has the form:

3EC18XYZSHAA

Each character position in the product code is used to indicate a different aspect of the modems configuration as follows:
  • The first 5 characters of the product code of every SpeedTouch Home modem are always 3EC18

  • X Field: The 6th Character (represented by "X" in the example above) indicates the model type according to the following table:

The "Line Pair" column is of most interest. It indicates if the model expects the DSL signal on the inner line pair (3/4) or the outer line pair (2/5) of the RJ-11 jack. Types "2" and "8" will work with BellSouth. However, depending on the configuration of your wall jack, a line swapper may be necessary to achieve sync when using Type "2".

  • Y Field: The 7th Character (represented by "Y" in the example above) indicates the encoding protocol supported by the modem according to this table:

Type "0" is the appropriate type for BellSouth. Some have reported that Type "3" may also work with BellSouth.

  • Z Field: The 8th Character (represented by "Z" in the example above) indicates the LAN Interface type:

Either type can be used with BellSouth.

  • S Field: The 9th Character (represented by "S" in the example above) indicates the Software Package:

Either type can be used with BellSouth.

  • H Field: The 10th Character (represented by "H" in the example above) indicates the Hardware Platform:

  • The last 2 characters of the product code are always AA
A typical product code such as 3EC18804BCAA would be interpreted as:
  • 110V/9V, US, line pair 3/4
  • Full Rate, G.DMT, ANSI T1.413 only, POTS overlay
  • 10Base-T LAN Interface
  • Bridging + PPTP
  • RS3.2 (3MB FLASH/ADNTF)
