OpenBSD has an excellent section in its FAQ on pf (OpenBSD uses pf now - it's similar to ipf.) The pf FAQ section can be found here:

Feedback received on this FAQ entry:
- OpenBSD's pf has changed radically in both implementation and syntax over the years, it is not really compatible with ipf/IPFilter anymore.. it's not even compatible with the ancient port that ship with FreeBSD/NetBSD.
I suppose one could link to the following, but NetBSD has npf now and FreeBSD tends to prefer ipfw just as Mac OS X so really it might be better to kill the mention of ipf on this FAQ, a last modified date of 2003 would indicate nobody cares either way.
