Yes. Some computers are sold with Windows preinstalled. These often come with a restore or rescue CD that contains Windows, but no original Microsoft Windows CD. Setup was written to analyze restore CDs during an upgrade and recognize the earlier version of Windows. However, there are many variations of restore CDs, and some of the CDs are not recognized by Setup if you attempt a new installation, or clean install, of Windows XP. In this case, use your restore CD to restore your earlier version of Windows. Then insert the Windows XP upgrade CD, and run Setup. In this case, Setup will recognize an earlier version of Windows installed on your hard drive, and it will proceed with the upgrade.
