The file (netcenter.cfg) contains a list of items that can be checked by netdiag.exe. Each item in the list must be in a specific format. These items then appear as buttons on the Connectivity tab in Netdiag, and as items in the drop-down lists on the Ping and Trace Route tabs.
The format for items in the list is as follows:
server_type ; help_file_name or URL ; name=host
"server_type" can be any of the following...
Gateway, NameServer, MailServer, NewsServer, WebServer, ProxyServer, FileServer, or Server
"help_file_name or URL" is optional. You can use a web address or any local html file name with an htm extension. This file is where the buttons on the Connectivity tab will take you to (via your browser) when you click on them.)
"name=host" serves two purposes:
"name" allows you to specify the text displayed on the buttons or in the drop-down lists,
"host" allows you to specify the URL or IP of the server being tested.
Instead of using "name=host", you can use "name=AutoDetect" to have Netdiag detect your Gateway or Name Servers. AutoDetect does not work for the other types of servers.
Below are some examples of properly formatted items in the list..
This first one checks the local PC...
Gateway ; netmon.htm ; Local Host = 127.0.0.1
In this example, the server type is a "Gateway", the file displayed when the button is clicked is "netmon.htm" (a file that is originally installed with the @Home netdiags package), and the button will display "Local Host" as the text. The program will perform pings to 127.0.0.1 when the test is run.
This next one checks for the attbi gateway...
Gateway ; ; ATTBI Gateway = Autodetect
Again, the server type is a "Gateway", and no file is displayed when you click on the button, but in this case the program does an autodetect of the attbi gateway and runs tests to it.
These next two check DNS servers...
NameServer ; ; Att Name Server = 188.8.131.52
NameServer ; ; UofP Name Server = 184.108.40.206
The above are examples of hard-coded DNS server values. Again, no files are displayed when the buttons are clicked. If desired, you can instead use...
NameServer ; ; Att Name Server = Autodetect
This next one checks the attbi mail server...
MailServer ; netmon.htm ; ATT Mail = mail.attbi.com
This one checks the attbi news sesrver...
NewsServer ; netmon.htm ; ATT News = netnews.attbi.com
This checks the attbi web server...
WebServer ; netmon.htm ; ATT Web = www
This checks the proxy server...
ProxyServer ; netmon.htm ; Proxy Server = proxy
This checks one of my favorite sites...
WebServer ; http://www.dslreports.com ; DSLReports = www.dslreports.com
This last one will provide a button labeled "DSLReports", will run tests to the DSLR site, and will take you to DSLReports (via your browser) if you click on the button
In the version that I have (version 2.1), you can have up to nine buttons - some later versions support more.
Unfortunately, running Netdiag in the "installer" mode (and the extra speed test that you used to be able to run) no longer works.
