ICS (Internet connection sharing) will work as a cheap home networking solution, or for users with internal or USB based DSL modems. Rather than using a router (not even possible with USB or internal DSL modems), get a cross over ethernet cable and hook your PS2 to a spare ethernet port on your ICS master, or (using regular ethernet cables) get a hub or a switch, and hook your PS2 to it, and another cable to your ICS master.
Then refer to this screenshot in order to do any required port forwarding under ICS.
