How do i start X apps as root while logged in as a normal user?

Place the following in root's .bashrc

# allow root to run programs when another
# user is in X
if [ ! "$USER" = "root" ]; then
export XAUTHORITY=/home/$USER/.Xauthority
fi

Note: this assumes that root's shell is /bin/bash
