If you're building a machine that will just process work units, consider whether you even need a sound card in it. If not, use the money for other parts, and keep your costs low. Here too, many motherboards come with onboard sound, so if you are not an audiophile, that may suffice. If you listen to music a lot, then you would want a dedicated sound card.
