An alias simply serves as a different name for the same mailbox. E-mail aliases direct mail sent to one e-mail address to another address. It might be used by family members as long as they don't mind having their mail in the same mailbox.

What this does is give you another e-mail address for the same account, so you don't have to use your original account name as an e-mail address.

So, mail to an alias will be downloaded along with the regular mail into the same inbox, but you can arrange to have it sorted into separate boxes in your email program.
