One of the most simple and effective ways to prolong battery life is to not use the LCD screen. This screen has a backlight and will drain your battery. Get accustomed to using the viewfinder.
Also, save your flash! Learn to know when flash is needed and when it isn't.

(ednote: Keeping your batteries warm in cold weather also prolongs battery life.)
