Sympatico is currently undergoing a program to remove all the Nortel modems it has in service with newer modems capable of much faster speeds. The Nortel modem is limited to 1 megabit speeds while newer modems can support speeds of many times that. There is no charge for this swap and the speed increase (if any depending on line conditions) is also at no additional monthly charge.

Call 310-SURF and connect to the billing department (NOT technical support). Tell them that you currently have a Nortel modem and you wish to swap for a new non-Nortel modem. They will arrange the swap for you right away.

You'll receive a new modem by courier, but don't hook it up right away. When the "Link Status" light on the Nortel modem changes to yellow or red, and you are unable to connect anymore (it can take several days for this to happen), disconnect the modem and connect the new modem instead. Also ensure that you remove all the old filters and replace them with the new filters that come with the new modem. The filters are different and if you don't change them out, you will have problems.

Ship the old modem and old filters back to Sympatico in the pre-paid postage bag they send you with the new modem. If you don't get a pre-paid bag for some reason, you can drop the old modem and old filters off at a Bell World Store. See /faq/8275
