How to get sync rate and line quality with a 5660 (note that this is available in either router or Bridge mode).

Set the IP address of your NIC to 10.0.0.2 and netmask 255.0.0.0/
In your browser open 10.0.0.1
You will need to enter your modem/router password if it has been set.
Select advanced setup
Under config procedures select DSL
Select view the current DSL mode and status and you should see something like this:

You can inadvertently close or cancel it, unintentionally. It is not 100% necessary to be on taskbar. Make a Shortcut to: en4060ct.exe in Windows/System directory. Click on it to reload to taskbar.

Green LED on solid on 4060 (4060 Locked to DSL tone). Don't know which end has dropped communications, but you can most likely regain proper operations by exiting Windows (98), powering down computer, and un-plugging the power supply for the 4060 for 3-4 minutes. Then power up 4060, and then your computer.
If still NG, there may really be no Server to find.
Don't attempt to power down 4060 while W98 is running, as you will probably get an error code forcing you to shut down anyway.

If you have a Speedstream 4060, you can call up simple settings by clicking on the Icon on the Taskbar. However, you can call up Advanced Detail Settings on 4060 by first calling up the normal 4060 settings (Click on icon on Taskbar) and then doing: Ctrl/Alt/a. You will get a more through set of information there.

Driver Installation

1) Place 3060 in PC, boot Windows 2000
NOTE: Win2000 will recognize the 3060 as a 3010 device, and incorrectly install 3010
drivers against it. This is OK, as the install application will correct this.

To view Device Manager - right click on "My Computer" and select
properties. Click the "Hardware" tab and select "Device Manager".

2) When the OS is up, run the self extracting EN60PW2K.EXE. Conversely, if you have previously
expanded these files, you can simply run the SETUP.EXE that is contained within the self-extracting zip.
NOTE: Setup should start automatically

3) When the 3060 Install Dialog appears, Click 'Install'.

The OS will remove the 3010 driver, restart Plug and Play, re-detect the 3060 adapter, and install the 3060 driver. The "Digital Signature Not Found" window will appear,
simply click "YES".

4) The Install is complete. Click "OK".

Driver Configuration
Open the Device Manager and view properties for the 3060 adapter.

To view Device Manager - right click on "My Computer" and select properties.
Click the "Hardware" tab and select "Device Manager". Expand the "Network Adapter"
entry, right click on the 3060 adapter entry and select "Properties".

Once the Properties windows for the 3060 adapter is displayed Click the "Advanced" tab.
From here you can change the VPI, VCI and encapsulation.

Making the Connection
Note: This is for a PPPoA connection.
Right click on "My Network Places" on the desktop and choose properties.
Double click the "3060 DSL Connection" Icon. Enter User name and password, then Dial.

Note: To manually create an icon, use Start->Programs->Efficient Networks-> Create 3060 DSL Connection Icon.
The Dial string is optional. If no dial string is present the parameters set in Device manager will be used.

Uninstalling the Driver

Simply goto Start->Programs->Efficient Networks->Uninstall 3060 DSL Modem.
At the uninstall dialog, click 'Remove' No reboot required.

Making the Connection
Note: This is for a PPPoE connection.

Choose 1483 PPPoE for the value of the Default Encapsulation. (See figure 1-2). Select Default VCI and insert 35 for the value. Select VPI and insert 0 for the value (some configurations are already set for 0 for the VPI and won't allow to change it.)

Insert the NTS software into the CD-ROM drive and install it. This is where you will put the customer's username and password in to make the connection. For more information, please refer to your NTS documents.

Uninstalling the Driver
Simply go to Start->Programs->Efficient Networks->Uninstall 3060 DSL Modem.
At the uninstall dialog, click 'Remove' No reboot required.

Known Issues

1.) The setup program EN60PW2K.EXE MUST be used to properly install the SpeedStream 3060 unit. If an attempt is made to use the INF file provided by Windows 2000, the 3060 device will not function because the operating system will inaccurately label the device "Efficient Networks SS-3010 Miniport Adapter.

2.) If you need to replace the internal modem or move it to another slot after installing the software, you MUST remove the driver software before moving the modem.

Most Windows ME computers, but not all, will not be able to shut down properly with the 4060 modem plugged in. If you shut down your PC by going to Start-Shut Down-Shut Down-OK, and get only a blinking white square it's the 4060 modem locking up your PC. If you unplug the 4060 modem, and the monitor turns off when you shut down this time it's the modem. If it's within 30 days of your due date, you can call the installation dept at 877-722-3755. Some of the CSI technicians know about it and others don't. You may have to call back if they won't replace it. If it's too late to replace your modem, you could unplug the USB modem each time you shut down your PC.

4060 users, when seeing the infamous "Can't Find Server" message used to be told to shut down computer, remove power from modem, wait a couple minutes, then power the whole thing up again. I've got a better idea!
next time you see "Can't Find Server" I suggest the following:
1. Disconnect the DSL line from the 4060.
2. Wait till the LED flashes yellow/green.
3. Plug the DSL line back into the 4060.
4. Try Enternet again.

If the Server is "UP" this will fix it, and you'll get an IP!

The Alcatel 1000's that Ameritech provided use the "line 2" positions on the phone jack (typically marked yellow/black) while the Westells and Efficient units use "line 1" (red/green). If you didn't rewire the jack you're on the wrong pins. Either switch the line positions in the jack or purchase a two-line splitter, which will give you a Line 1, Line 2 and Line 1+2 jack when plugged into your existing DSL phone jack. Use Line 2 for a Westell or Efficient modem. These adapters are available just about everywhere that sells phone accessories.

If you got an Alcatel 1000 from Ameritech, your are most certainly on PPPoA. The VCI/VPI settings for the Alcatel set the ATM port active and disable the Ethernet port. You must use the Efficient 3010 ATM NIC provided to connect to the modem's ATM port, and use PPPoA as the connection agent.

If you want to use a SOHO router like the Linksys or Netgear units, for example, you need to have your account reprovisioned to PPPoE and get a different modem. There are some routers which combine the modem function with the router and will work on PPPoA, but they are considerably more expensive than the usual SOHO routers.

One successful case history, which involved changing from a 3060 PCI modem on PPPoA to a 5260 Ethernet modem on PPPoE using Windows XP is in this forum thread. In this case the usual 0/35 setting didn't work (needed 0/105).

See this forum thread for instructions on how to configure a SOHO Gateway (router) to be able to telnet to and read the Efficient 5260 modem line specs without switching cables or using Enternet300. This will not work with newer 5x6x units with telnet disabled (like the 5262) however.

You'll have to load Enternet300 version 1.5c to see the modem' line data, since the Windows XP PPPoE client can't get at that, and the only other way is via telnet (which Efficient Networks has conveniently disabled in newer modems).

You can get a free 30-day evaluation copy of Enternet300 1.5c via this link, and as long as your XP PPPoE client doesn't automatically start you shouldn't have to change anything else on your machine to use it.

Alcatel 1000 takes sync from pins 2 & 5 of 6-pin RJ-14 jack (as oppose to current Ethernet modems on pins 3 & 4) which corresponds to Yellow and Black wires in the phone jack. Your voice line normally uses Red and Green wires which corresponds to Pin 3 & 4 of 6-pin RJ-14 jack.

What you need is a line swapper OR a 2-line, 3-way adaptor from Radio Shack, part # 279-432 and use it as line swapper. And of course you can rewire your phone jack accordingly.

First, you will need to connect your Alcatel 1000 directly to your NIC card via a 10BaseT Ethernet cable. Set your NIC card (in Windows TCP/IP Properties) to 10.0.0.8 with subnet mask of 255.0.0.0, you may need to reboot your computer depending on your OS. Next, use your browser and enter 10.0.0.138 as your URL address. You should be able to browse into Alcatel 1000 setup web page. Some earlier model of Alcatel 1000 (1998 or earlier) do not have web page setup and thus will not work (usually model # ends with AAAA or earlier).

The "5360" is not a single kind of modem. The one labeled "060-5360-023" on the bottom is very different from its predecessors. The 5360-023 was made as a simplified unit that removes certain diagnostic access to prevent user-inflicted problems. However it suffers from an ethernet port bug. Unfortunately the troubled modem is what the new 2002 users often get. This can cause or compound their install process giving slow surf. Fortunately there is an easy workaround and a cure.

Simple Workaround:

1. Power on the 5360-023 and allow the unit to fully boot.
2. Power off and then back on very quickly.

The Cure: Re-flash the Modem: See file and instructions, which are available directly from SBC Ameritech at the links provided.

Another secondary source for the patch file is the attachment in this forum post.

The problem is caused by a 10/100 autonegotiation flaw. The unfixed modem works with some 10/100 connections and few, if any, 10-base-T ports. For some it works better to the the user's ISP's sites than elsewhere.

The current generic driver for the 3060 and 4060 modems is v3.4.6 this driver works on:
Windows 98
Windows Millennium
Windows 2000
Windows XP

Efficient has SBC/Ameritech drivers on its website for:
Windows 95
Windows NT Workstation
Windows NT Server
Windows Millennium


The drivers can be obtained by doing a Knowledge Base search at Efficient's Web Site.
The v3.4.6 driver also works with the SpeedStream 3061 and 4031 modems.

SBC also has 3060/4060 driver for Windows XP and installation instructions with screenshots.
SBC/Ameritech shipped the 4060 until about late 2001.
The 3060 PCI internal modem was issued by Ameritech before the SBC buyout of Ameritech. Back then the DSL service was named "SpeedPath" and they used "unbundled loop" $49.95 per month for SpeedPath 768Kbps/128Kbps Service and you had to purchase the DSL modem.
The 5660, 5260, 5262,and 5360 modems look like the 4060 but they had more lights.

You can view sync rates on older "bridge" Speedstream DSL modem's, using Enternet 300 v1.5c.
If you have a Efficient Speedstream model 5260,5262 or 5360 DSL ethernet modem. The model number is on a tag on the bottom of the modem. You can view the sync rates using Enternet 300 v1.5c PPPoE client, installed with an active connection.
