You cannot bypass AOL's proxy. It is implemented in the AOL program itself, even if you run native Internet Explorer or Netscape.

To view your connection speed in bps (bits per second), connect to AOL through any method. Click on
Help in the menu, and then click on
About America Online. Hold down your control key and press 'y'.
You will find your AOL client speed under
Current Connection Speed (bps). Speed may be faster than reported using native Internet Explorer.

Keep in mind this "estimate" is sometimes inaccurate. Anything over 115,200bps will activate AOL Plus features.

``You might have noticed after making the upgrade to AOL 4.0 that compared to AOL 3.0 it spends an inordinate amount of time "grinding" the hard drive any time you do any sort of activity in it, regardless of how fast your computer is. The AOLSpeed program improves this situation. What it does is patch an AOL program file (supersub.dll) to disable its unnecessary "disk buffer flushing." The end result is an AOL that performs noticably faster on most operations and accesses the disk less (so it's quieter)."
This patch can be found at
AOL Speed.org

Microsoft no longer supports the downloading of Java Virtual Machine from their website. There is a solution, insert your AOL disc and go to the folder label
AOL TECH. Inside that folder you will see JAVAVM. The latest build for MS Java VM is 3810 with no more updates. An update to build 3810 will still be provided via Windows Update but cannot be used to install MS Java VM.
You can also download
Sun's Java VM which is still being updated.
