Note: All User Guide require Adobe Acrobat Reader. Some of the guides are very large and will take time to download. SpeedTouch Home User Guide Alcatel SpeedTouch Pro Users Guide Alcatel SpeedTouch Pro Command Line Interface Guide Alcatel SpeedTouch USB Users Guide Alcatel 1000 Users Guide Andy Houtz by Andy Houtz edited by FAQFixer There are three sections to this FAQ: Section 1 Commands for accessing the STH line statistics Section 2 Screen capture of required commands Section 3 General line statistic information To obtain line statistics from the Alcatel STH modem, a command-line interface (CLI) via telnet must be utilized. Important Note: If you are using a separate router in conjunction with your modem must connect the modem directly to a single PC in order to access the modem's interface. Additionally, to access the data the modem must be in Expert (Trace & Debug) mode. You must have the challenge code before you can proceed with this FAQ. Please reference the STH Expert Mode FAQ to obtain the challenge code or if you are unable to telnet into the STH. If all the information and procedures listed above are too complicated or you simply don't want the hassle there is a third party program called Alcatool that provides a GUI alternative available here. Important notes: All command prompts are case sensitive! Do not type the quotation marks with the commands! Telnet procedures: Open the Run Command by clicking on Start then Run. Type cmd in the field. A DOS window will open. Type telnet 10.0.0.138 at the prompt. You'll see the User prompt. Do not enter anything and simply hit Enter. If you see a password prompt, enter the system password you set. You'll see a banner on the screen with a => prompt below the banner. Depending on firmware version you will type in one of two commands to enter Expert mode.
'SpeedTouch (00-90-D0-12-34-56)' is the modem number used in the STH Expert Mode FAQ to obtain the challenge code. Type in the challenge code at the Password: prompt. Type "tdsl" at the prompt. Type "golden on" at the tdsl> prompt. The modem will restart. Do not continue until synch light stops flashing and is solid green. Type "exit" at the tdsl> prompt. Type "golden" at the prompt. Type "operational_data" at the golden> prompt. This will bring up your line statistics that will look similar to the information shown below.
----------------------------------------------- Attainable line rate : 6628 kbit/sec Attainable Atm rate : 6176 kbit/sec Used line rate : 1764 kbit/sec Fast used Atm rate : 1472 kbit/sec Interleaved used Atm rate : 0 kbits/sec Rel. capacity occupation : 27 Noise Margin : 21 dB Line attenuation : 35 dB Output Power : 7 dBm Operational data report : far end (Upstream) -------------------------------------------- Attainable line rate : 864 kbit/sec Attainable Atm rate : 768 kbit/sec Used line rate : 348 kbit/sec Fast used Atm rate : 256 kbit/sec Interleaved used Atm rate : 0 kbits/sec Rel. capacity occupation : 41 Noise Margin : 19 dB Line attenuation : 30 dB Output Power : 1 dBm Type "exit" at the golden> prompt. Type "tdsl" at the prompt. Type "golden off" at the tdsl> prompt. The modem will restart. Do not continue until synch light stops flashing and is solid green. Type "exit" at the tdsl> prompt. Type "NORMAL" (upper case) at the prompt. Type "exit" at the prompt. Use CTRL+C keys to close the telnet session with the STH. Important notes: All command prompts are case sensitive. Remove the quotation marks from entries that are typed. Attainable Line Rate (AKA Synch Rate) This is the maximum rate at which your modem can connect to the DSLAM if there was no service provisioning limiting the bandwidth. Anything over 2,000Kbps is considered good. The higher the number the better. Used Line Rate Your Used ATM Rate (actual service rate) plus bandwidth to cover the overhead and provisioning of the service. Fast Used ATM Rate Actual bandwidth at which your service has been provisioned. The actual number can vary a little depending how you are physically serviced. If there is a number here that also means your connection is "fastpathed". Interleaved Used ATM Rate Actual bandwidth at which your service has been provisioned. The actual number can vary a little depending how you are physically serviced. If there is a number here that also means your connection is "interleaved". Relative Capacity Occupation Percentage of your overall available bandwidth used to obtain your service ATM rate. For example; if your max line synch rate was 5888Kbps and you were provisioned on a 1472Kbps service you would be using 25% capacity. 1472/5888=25% capacity. The lower the relative capacity the better, but you can still get maximum speeds (although a less stable connection) even with a very high relative capacity. In other words you could be synching at 1472Kbps with 98% relative capacity and achieve maximum speeds, but you may experience more disconnects. Noise Margin (AKA Signal to Noise Ratio) Relative strength of the DSL signal to Noise ratio. 6dB is the lowest dB manufactures specify for modem to be able to synch. In some instances interleaving can help raise the noise margin to an acceptable level. The higher the number the better for this measurement. Line Attenuation Measure of how much the signal has degraded between the DSLAM and the modem. Maximum signal loss recommendation is usually about 60dB. The lower the dB the better for this measurement. Output Power How much power modem (upstream) or DSLAM (downstream) is using. Maximum recommended is about 15dB. The lower the power the better for this measurement. __________________________________________________________ Andy Houtz Feedback received on this FAQ entry:
by Andy Houtz edited by FAQFixer Important Note: If you are using a separate router in conjunction with your modem you must connect the modem directly to a single PC in order to access the modem's interface. AlcaTool is a third party software that offers an interface for configuring and monitoring an Alcatel SpeedTouch Home. It provides an in depth GUI alternative to the standard telnet session and is available for various OSs including Windows and Mac8, 9, and X. The Main System Page has a Line Stats button available at the lower right section as shown below. By default, the Line Stats window will only report the downstream statistics. Select golden_operation_data from the list, and click re-initialize line to obtain the upstream line stats. •AlcaTool Download •AlcaTool Setup Guide •AlcaTool Reference Manual **Disclaimer*** Several of the functions and GUIs do not work correctly or have not been completed as stated by the manufacturer. It is offered as a development tool and states no guarantees or liability. Click here to learn more about line statistics, what is measured, and recommended values. by Andy Houtz edited by FAQFixer Disclaimer: Entering the EXPERT mode on the modem is intended for qualified personnel. This information does not imply official support from BellSouth or BroadBand Reports. Summary: The ability to enter Expert Mode requires a special, individualized code that is available through a third party website. You will be required to telnet into the STH, get a product code, and enter that code into the third party website. The website will in turn give you the Expert Mode Challenge String which you will then enter in the modem interface. Please reference the following instructions. Before you can access the modem interface, your NIC must be configured for an IP address within the subnet of the STH. By default the STH interface is set for 10.0.0.138/255.255.255.0. If you do not have an IP address in this range set on your NIC you will not be able to access the interface. To configure the NIC correctly please reference this STH NIC Configuration FAQ. After verifying your system is configured for the correct IP address, you can continue as follows:

by Andy Houtz Note: It should not be necessary to configure the modem if it was purchased directly from BellSouth. This installation guide will assume that the modem is set to the factory default IP address of 10.0.0.138. If that is not the case or you are unsure, you will need to perform the "Ping-of-Line" procedure outlined in section 6.1.1 of the SpeedTouch Home Users Manual to reset the IP address to the factory Default, before continuing with these instructions. You will also need to insure that the modem is connected to the network card in your PC and powered on. See Chapter 3 in the SpeedTouch Home Users Manual for more details.
by leevis edited by Andy Houtz •Two distinctly different STHs (K model or G model) are supported by BellSouth and their firmware can not be interchanged. If you are unsure which model you have you can download both firmware versions or click here to determine which model you have. Download SpeedTouch Home K Model Firmware •The update process will require you to 'Remove' the passive version, 'Upload' the new version, then 'Switch' the firmware. •If you are unable to access the STH make sure your NIC is properly configured and PC is connected directly to the modem via a straight thru ethernet cable. Click here for more information. Step 1 Disconnect from the Internet and unplug the DSL phone line going into the modem. Step 2 Log into the modem by entering »10.0.0.138 in the browser address field. Click on Upgrade. (If you are unable to access the STH make sure your NIC and PC are properly configured as stated above). Step 3 Take notice of the Active software version entry as it determines which firmware is appropriate for your modem. If it starts with K use the KHDSDA3.270, if it starts with G, use the GV8BAD3.270. Click Remove Passive from the top menu. Step 4 Confirm that the Passive software version is now empty. Click Browse and locate the appropriate firmware. Click Upload. Step 5 Confirm that the firmware just uploaded is now the Passive software version. Click Switch Over and wait. Don't turn off the modem. The passive firmware will be uploaded and replace the current active firmware and it may take up to 2 to 3 minutes. In some cases, all lights on the modem will go off for a minute or two. Eventually the modem will act like it was just 'powered on' going through the normal solid red, blink red, solid orange, then green sequence for the power led. If by chance the modem refuses to upload the firmware, then there is another procedure that must be done via the telnet interface to get the modem to accept the new firmware:
Now you should be able to upgrade the firmware normally. Follow the procedures as shown in Steps 4 and 5 above. Feedback received on this FAQ entry:
by FROSTY Alcatel made two distinct STH models that use unique firmaware. You will need to access the STH interface via a web browser to determine which model you have. If you are unable to access the STH make sure your NIC is properly configured and PC is connected directly to the modem via a straight thru ethernet cable. Click here for more information. Step 1 Log into the modem by entering »10.0.0.138 in the browser address field. Click on Upgrade. Step 2 The first number of the Active software version entry is the model type (which in this case is a "G"). Exit the interface by closing the browser. Andy Houtz by Andy Houtz edited by FAQFixer All Alcatel SpeedTouch Home Ethernet DSL modems have a 12 character product code located on the bottom of the modem. The product code can be used to determine the capabilities of the particular unit. This product code has the form: 3EC18XYZSHAA Each character position in the product code is used to indicate a different aspect of the modems configuration as follows:
by leevis edited by Andy Houtz If you are using an Alcatel SpeedTouch Home (without a router), a PPPoE client such as NTS, WinPoet, or RASPPPoE, and are experiencing stalls and freezes while surfing or connected, it may be that your NIC is not configured correctly. You must set a Static IP on your NIC. If you have it incorrectly set for "Obtain IP automatically" it will be looking for a DHCP server that does not exist. During the time the NIC is searching for the DHCP server you will experience stalls and freezes. An incorrect NIC settings will also cause the PC to take a longer time to boot up. This FAQ has two sections: Section 1 - NIC Properties for Windows95/98/ME Section 2 - NIC Properties for Windows2000/XP Step 1 Click on Start ->Settings ->Control Panel ->Network Step 2 Once at the Network Window scroll down and look for the first entry in the box marked Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) that is associated with your hardware ethernet card (ignore dialup, AOL, and VPN type bindings). Select the correct Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) entry and click PROPERTIES. Actual screen shots may vary Step 3 Select the IP ADDRESS tab. Select Use the following IP address and enter 10.0.0.1 and 255.255.255.0 into IP address and subnet mask fields respectively. Do not click on OK yet. Actual screen shots may vary Step 4 Select the GATEWAY tab. Enter 10.0.0.138 into New Gateway field and click on Add. Click OK. Step 5 Close all windows and restart the PC. Step 1 Click on START -> SETTINGS -> CONTROL PANEL -> NETWORK CONNECTIONS. Right click on Local Area Connection and select Properties Step 2 On the General tab highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click PROPERTIES. Actual screen shots may vary Step 3 Select the GENERAL tab. Select Use the following IP address and enter 10.0.0.1, 255.255.255.0, and 10.0.0.138 into IP address, Subnet mask, and Default gateway fields respectively. Click OK. Actual screen shots may vary Step 4 Close all windows and restart the PC. Andy Houtz Feedback received on this FAQ entry:

by tomsprat edited by KeysCapt To get started, download Alcatool. This program simplifies obtaining the Expert code and issuing the telnet commands to convert a standard STH to an STH Pro. STEP 1 - Setup communications with the modem Unplug the phone line from the modem, and connect a PC directly to the modem with a standard CAT5 Ethernet patch cable.STEP 2 - Acces the modem with Alcatool Unzip Alcatool into a temp folder and run it.STEP 3 - Alcatool console commands At the main Alcatool SpeedTouch window, click the Console button in the lower right corner. On the box that pops up, click the Obtain code button. by FROSTY Print this for easy reference during the reset to defaults process. • Ensure the modem and PC are connected either by direct connection with a crossover CAT5 cable or both are connected to a hub or switch with standard CAT5 cables. Example: STH/STPro <--- Crossover CAT5 cable ---> PC Ethernet card (NIC) Or ---> STH/STPro | = (Hub or Switch) | ---> PC Ethernet card (NIC) •Turn off power to the modem and disconnect the phone line to the modem. •Set the IP and subnet of the PC NIC to be a static IP of 10.0.0.200 / 255.0.0.0 •Download this file, extract the STHPDRST.BAT from this ZIP file to the desktop: STH Ping to Defaults BAT file •Double click the STHPDRST.BAT file to run it. When the file runs, it will open a CMD prompt and display some text in reference to this process. The file will start issuing continuous ping commands after pressing 'any key' like the spacebar at the pause prompt. •While the continuous ping commands are timing out, turn on power to the modem and wait. •The power led on the modem should do the following: Red, blinking red, solid orange, solid green. Shortly after the power led turns solid green, the modem should reset to defaults and reboot. The power led will starting blinking red, and turn solid orange again. At this point press CTRL+C on the keyboard to break the endless ping cycle. Preferably before the power led turns solid green or it will reset the modem to defaults again. Answer N or n to the 'Terminate batch job?' question and press enter. This breaks the ping cycle and issues the proper ARP delete command for the Ping to Defaults. •After the modem has been reset to defaults, be sure to log into the modem's webpages (http://10.0.0.138), disable DHCP, and delete all Bridge, PPtP, CIP, PPP, and Phonebook entries. This FAQ explains the procedure in more detail minus extra Pro entries. Then re-create the appropriate phonebook and PPP or Bridge entries. The STPro has an excessive amount of default entries that are not required and could introduce connection problems. Note: An interesting fact about the Ping to Defaults, the PC does not have to be in the same IP octet and subnet range as the modem. The modem's IP address should be 10.0.0.138 / 255.0.0.0 unless it has been changed. This is irrelevant for the Ping to Defaults. All that matters is the IP of the PC NIC be in the same octet range to the IP settings in the STHPDRST.BAT file. The STHPDRST.BAT file can be edited with any text editor like notepad. Alternative to changing the IP of the PC NIC: The STHPDRST.BAT can be edited to correlate to the current IP and subnet range of the PC NIC. If the PC NIC is 192.168.1.50, change all occurrences of 10.0.0.100 in the STHPDRST.BAT file to something like 192.168.1.200 and save the file. In the end, the IP of the PC will still have to be changed in order to log into the modem after it's been reset to defaults and reconfigure the modem accordingly. This alternative method is not recommended because of this, but is nonetheless an option for future reference. by FROSTY First you will need the following software. Download it here: »www.nubz.org/alcatool/Do ··· oad.html Then open your Linksys Router's setup page by entering its address in your browser window. (192.168.1.1 or what ever you have it set to) Under WAN Connection change it to Static IP and add the following:
Click "apply" and close the page. Open the Nubz AlcaTool software that you downloaded, and in the Connect window add the following:
Click Connect From there click the Line Stats button in the bottom right ... That's all there is to it. Now you will NOT be able to connect to the Internet while your router is set to Static IP. When you are all done checking your line stats just open the Router Setup page and set your WAN Connection back to PPPOE and click apply ...
