Yes, there are several effective firewalls available on the internet. One includes the popular Zone Alarm available at Zone Labs or see the FAQ Links for more information.

After analyzing the script for the program that is installed with this program, it is the opinion of this author, that the plug-in should not be installed. Much of the information that is gathered from the client computer could be damaging if obtained by outside parties.
Furthermore, BellSouth's disclaimer regarding information that is obtained by them, virtually gives them the right to disclose this information to anyone they desire.

A firewall is a system designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a computer or private network. A firewall can be implemented in both hardware and software, or a combination of both. They are frequently used to prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing computers or private networks connected to the Internet. All messages entering or leaving the computer or private network pass through the firewall, which examines each message and blocks those that do not meet the specified security criteria.

A firewall is still recommended, even if you use a broadband router. Most broadband routers provide a form of firewall protection from unwanted incoming traffic through the very mechanism it uses to share the internet connection. However, most do not contain a "traditional" firewall and do not block any outgoing traffic. This still makes you vulnerable to trojan or malicious "phone home" programs.
