If you're building a machine that will just process work units, consider whether you even need a sound card in it. If not, use the money for other parts, and keep your costs low.

Many new motherboards come with onboard sound, so if you are not an audiophile, that will suffice. If you listen to music a lot, then you would want a dedicated sound card. The Soundlbaster Audigy 2 recently debuted and is a very high performance sound card that goes for around $100. TurtleBeach also sells the Santa Cruz which is a little less expensive than the Soundblaster.
