Blades can be considered any operational system and can be single or dual processor boards. The "blade" term was originally used to describe a system that ran in a cluster that booted off a central server. Several of BBR's Distributed Computing teams run blade systems build by their members. Here are some examples and threads with blade related information.

The picture below is one of parkut's systems and shows a well thought out, clean implementation of a blade system.
