When using ASMTP (Authenticated SMTP), You will make a one-time change to your email logon settings. Once done, you will be able to send email from abroad or from home, without switching settings back and forth. ASMTP also allows EarthLink members to send email while using non-EarthLink networks, such as, office network (unless that network doesn´t permit connections to outside mail servers). In short, as long as you have an EarthLink account, you will not need to connect to the internet through EarthLink in order to use the ASMTP servers.
Send email from almost any location: • From abroad, using International roaming • From home, while connected to EarthLink • From the office (unless the office LAN does not permit connections to outside mail servers) • From any location, using any enternet service EarthLink members that use any of the email programs, listed below, are encouraged to change the email settings and start using ASMTP right away:
Windows 95/98/Me/NT 4.0/2000/XP: • EarthLink TotalAccess 2003 • Microsoft Outlook 2000 • Microsoft Outlook Express 5.0-5.5 • Netscape Communicator 4.x • Netscape 6.0-6.2 Mail
Mac OS 7.0.1-9.2: • Outlook Express 5.0 • Netscape Messenger 4.5-4.71
Mac OS X: • Mail
If you know how to change email settings: • Outgoing or SMTP server name: "smtpauth.earthlink.net" and specify port 587 • Server requires authentication using the full EarthLink email address and password
If you do not know how to change email settings, or for more detailed information, go to:
Authenticated SMTP - Using EarthLink's Authenticated Mail Server to Send Mail
Original version: »web.archive.org/web/200502061532···psc.html
Older versions of EarthLink´s email software do not support ASMTP. If you are using EarthLink 5.0 or earlier for email and wish to take advantage of ASMTP, upgrade to the newer software, TotalAccess Application, available for download at:

EarthLink DSL & Home Phone Service- Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
NOTE: The new service bundle uses ADSL2+ only and you will need the Earthlink supplied ADSL2+ modem to connect unless you have your own ADSL2+ ready Modem. A standard ADSL Modem will NOT work. As of 2006/2007 the ZyXEL P660R-61/P660R-ELNK are the only two ADSL2+ Modems provided by Earthlink. None of the earlier modems from Earthlink can support ADSL2+.

Did you setup your Modem per the Guide? You do not need to install any Earthlink Software.
If you are missing the Guide then follow the steps outlined in the link below:
Zyxel 660R-61 Router Setup for PPPoE
To use a Router behind the ZyXEL you need to place it into Bridge Mode and setup your Router to handle PPPoE with your full username and password.
Zyxel 660R-61 Router Setup for Bridge Mode
If you cannot reach the setup IP of 192.168.1.1 for the ZyXEL then make sure you setup your PC for DHCP:
How do I set my PC or Mac to DHCP to use a Router or UHP Modem?
What do the LEDs show for the status of the unit? Your PC will be given a Private IP of 192.168.1.33 and the ZyXEL will be reachable at 192.168.1.1

EarthLink DSL & Home Phone - Personal Support Center
NOTE: The new service bundle uses ADSL2+ only and you will need the Earthlink supplied ADSL2+ modem to connect unless you have your own ADSL2/ADSL2+ ready Modem. A standard ADSL Modem will NOT work with the ADSL2+ Standard and can only connect with older backwards compatible standards that top out at 8.0 Mbps and may not be as stable. As of 2006/2007 the ZyXEL P660R-61, and the ZyXEL P660R-ELNK, and the ZyXEL P660R-D1 are the only three ADSL2/ADSL2+ Modems provided by Earthlink. None of the earlier ADSL Modems from Earthlink can support ADSL2/ADSL2+ connections.

Zyxel P-660R-ELNK - Configuration for Bridge Mode
Note: The above info is not for the Zyxel 660R-D1 Router as they have their own FAQ entries.
NOTE 1: With the Zyxel P-660R-ELNK in Bridge mode, you must either have another device (a Router or your PC) to use that can be configured for PPPoE authentication. Either a Router that supports PPPoE or a PC running PPPoE Software like XP has built-in or an older version of Windows (Win2000, WinME, Win98, Win95) will have with WinPoET installed as either of those will work when properly configured.
NOTE 2: To use Bridge Mode in the P-660R-ELNK you must follow the instructions exactly and use the Wizard page as directed. Then you can hook up a Router or PC to use once it is configured for PPPoE.
NOTE 3: The new DSL & Home Phone (LPV) service bundle uses ADSL2+ only and you will need the Earthlink supplied ADSL2+ modem to connect unless you have your own ADSL2+ ready Modem. A standard ADSL Modem will NOT work. As of 2006/2007 the ZyXEL P660R-61/P660R-ELNK are the only two ADSL2+ Modems provided by Earthlink. None of the earlier modems from Earthlink can support ADSL2+.

In order to obtain DSL Stats & Diagnostic Info from the ZyXEL P660R-ELNK it may require setting it up for PPPoE if it is not already configured in that mode and you cannot reach it at it's web interface IP of 192.168.1.1 ( »192.168.1.1 ). If you can reach the ZyXEL Web Interface right now at it's IP of 192.168.1.1 then skip down to 3 pages and their thumbnail images for what info to post. If not, then read the steps directly below (depending on your use of Bridge Mode or a secondary Router follow the correct steps).
If it is in Bridge Mode the IP 192.168.1.1 will not work (not found/unable to find or similar error) until you have made a few temporary changes to your setup. If you are using a Router behind the ZyXEL P660R-ELNK then you would remove the PPPoE login info from your second Router and then set that Router to DHCP temporarily in order to regain access to the ZyXEL P660R-ELNK at it's IP of 192.168.1.1 (»192.168.1.1 ). You would then reset the ZyXEL P660R-ELNK modem so it starts up in Router Mode with it's DHCP server running so it can assign your Router or your PC a IP address using DHCP. If you were using the Windows or Linux PPPoE client instead of a second Router you would temporarily disable that from running, reset the Modem and setup the PC Ethernet Properties for TCP/IP to DHCP (Automatically Assign IP Address) instead. Then you would need to use the DOS command "ipconfig /release" (minus the quotes) then after 10 seconds the command "ipconfig /renew" (minus the quotes) so that the PC can now access the formerly bridged Modem. The DOS commands can be run in Windows by opening a DOS Command box. Click Start --- Run --- Type "cmd" (minus the quotes) --- Click OK and the DOS Command box will open ready for you to type the two ipconfig commands listed above into it one at a time.

Then you will be able to access these following 3 pages for the stats.

Click Here for Full size Image
Shows Downstream Noise Margin Stats page
Click Here for Full size Image
Shows Upstream Noise Margin Stats page
Click Here for Full size Image
The Stats needed are under the Maintenance Menu on the Diagnostics Button - under the DSL Line menu option.
You want to post the first 3 lines from the Downstream Noise Margin button and the first 3 lines from the Upstream Noise Margin button.
Also post the output from the Maintenance Menu - System Status Page button at the very bottom that is marked "Show Statistics".
You can post screen shots (please use only .JPG or .GIF or .PNG image file formats if you chose to post images) like the three (3) images above or if you prefer you can also post just the numerical data right into your post by using copy/paste like the example below:
Note: Do not post tones as they are not needed.
quote: noise margin upstream: 16 db output power downstream: 6 db attenuation upstream: 25 db
noise margin downstream: 13 db output power upstream: 2 db attenuation downstream: 39 db
---------------------
System up Time: 0:10:22 CPU Load: 0.25%
WAN Port Statistics: Link Status: Up Upstream Speed: 384 kbps Downstream Speed: 1536 kbps Node-Link Status TxPkts RxPkts Errors Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time 1-PPPoE Up 253 270 0 74 0 0:08:11
LAN Port Statistics: Interface: Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Ethernet 100M/Full Duplex 1072 919 0
That is all there is to it so you can easily add this info into your Earthlink DSL Forum post to get further help.

• How do I check modem statistics/event logs? What do the numbers mean?
Although what is monitored and the exact name may be different depending on manufacturer, the overall information is pretty much the same. Below are some of the common terms and measurements used to judge line quality. Remember these are not hard numbers but simply a generalization of line statistics: SN Margin (AKA Signal to Noise Margin or Signal to Noise Ratio)Relative strength of the DSL signal to Noise ratio. 6dB is generally the lowest dB manufactures specify in order for the modem to be able to synch. In some instances interleaving can help raise the noise margin to an acceptable level. Generally speaking, as overall bandwidth increases, your signal to noise ratio decreases. So a customer that upgrades from 1.5 to 6.0 service will typically see a corresponding decrease in the signal to noise ratio. The higher the number the better for this measurement. 6dB or below is bad and will experience no synch or intermittent synch problems 7dB-10dB is fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions 11dB-20dB is good with no synch problems 20dB-28dB is excellent 29dB or above is outstanding Line AttenuationMeasure of how much the signal has degraded between the DSLAM and the modem. Maximum signal loss recommendation is usually about 60dB. One of the biggest factors affecting line attenuation is distance from the DSLAM. Generally speaking, bigger distances mean higher attenuation. The lower the dB the better for this measurement. 20dB and below is outstanding 20dB-30dB is excellent 30dB-40dB is very good 40dB-50dB is good 50dB-60dB is poor and may experience connectivity issues 60dB or above is bad and will experience connectivity issues Note: The above info is not for the Zyxel 660R-D1 Router as they have their own FAQ entries.

That is not the Model Number, but is something else. You have what is known as the P-660R-D1 Modem/Router instead. You can and should verify this by looking at the large label under the ZyXEL Brand Name. You will see "Model Number:" printed out and then you will see the "P-660R-D1" designation printed right after the colon (:) which is the actual Model Number. The smaller sticker with the MOD-400550 number is for another purpose since it is separate from the larger Manufacturer Label.

(once you hit enter your modem will lose sync because of the change. it will regain sync.) you will be taken back to the flashing cursor. type exit to back out, your now done. just exit out of all the menu thus exiting telnet. A reset of the Modem will remove the change and reset all configuration options back to their defaults like it was when new.
