20 Connection & Tweaking

·How can I tweak my connection for better speed and performance?
·Link to Speakeasy's speed test
·How do I tell who's *really* provisioning my line?
·Where are the TCP/Web100 Network Diagnostic Tool Locations?
There are several ways to do this.

First, go to DSLR Tools and then click on the Tweak Test. After it completes, follow the suggestions given to improve your connection.

Second, should you want to tweak some more, do a speed test from here and note your upload and download speed. Then head over to the Tweaks forum and download Dr TCP to help adjust your settings. Then come back to the Speed Test and take another test again. Your speed should have improved. If not, then repeat your steps again and try another test.

If you are unsure about the Tweaks you are applying, feel free to ask in the Tweaks forum.

After you have done these things, you should have a fairly fast and stable line, providing your connection the web via cable or DSL is on par and up to specs per your ISP/CLEC/ILEC.

Third, if you still have issues with your speed or latency, call tech support and have them look into the situation. It may very well be something outside of your realm and only fixable by your ISP/CLEC/ILEC.

Last, if you still feel you have an issue that needs attention, feel free to post your question here. Someone is always nearby to offer an answer or direct you to a correct answer by way of links and tests.

Since they seem much more "reliable" or maybe they're simply less busy, they usually provide more accurate results. They're the same test, so you're comparing apples to apples...

Click on the link below to try the speakeasy speedtest. If you have any questions about it, link the speedtest and post about it in the forums.

The main thing to be aware is that Earthlink doesn't provide DSL connectivity directly - it contracts through several other companies. These companies "provision" your connection and are also known as CLECs (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier).

In some cases this may be your phone company (or ILEC - Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier) but by no means all cases. When your phone company provisions you they act both as your CLEC and ILEC.

Here's a simple way to find who provisions you...

GET YOUR PUBLIC IP AND LOOK UP IT'S NAME
One way to quickly do this is go to: »www.ipchicken.com and note what the "Name Address" ends with. Find your provisioning company below.

covad.net
You are provisioned by Covad. Your service is commonly called "Covad+IP".

qwest.net
You are provisioned by Qwest. Your service is commonly called "Qwest+IP".

earthlink.net, mindspring.com and all others
If BellSouth is your phone company, you are probably provisioned by them.
If Qwest is your phone company, you are probably provisioned by them.
If SBC is your phone company, you are probably provisioned by them.
If Verizon is your phone company, you are probably provisioned by them.

If your situation is not covered here, feel free to post to: »Earthlink DSL
